2014 WHEATON THUNDER SOCCER

2014 Thunder Men's Soccer Season Preview
"It is exciting to walk into the upcoming season with the usual enthusiasm that everybody has and to know that we have this
kind of ability. Rarely in life do adventures end the way that you want them to, but this one could. It is exciting to even contemplate
that," states Wheaton's men's soccer coach Mike Giuliano. The veteran head coach, entering his eighth season at Wheaton,
announced in May that the 2014 campaign would be his last with the Thunder. He will remain at Wheaton until December 2014
and has accepted a position as a head coach at Greater Atlanta Christian School that is slated to begin in January, 2015
Giuliano mentions, "I am so incredibly grateful to both institutions involved. Wheaton could have said no, you can't resign and
still coach the fall season, and Greater Atlanta Christian needs a teacher in the fall and they could have said no. So I am very
grateful to have this one last chance and to realize that this will be my final season of 28 years at the college level." He continues,
"What is fun about it all is that I am really coming in with one of my top teams of my career. Probably this year's team and last
year's team would top my list on the men's side as the best teams I have ever coached."
Giuliano expands on his 2014 Thunder squad, "There is not a lot of drama about who the probable first 11 are going to be. I
certainly want to respect all the other guys that have worked hard in the offseason and could make an impact in the preseason.
But, there are a lot returning starters, as well as other guys, that got plenty of time behind one of the graduating seniors. It is a
group that knows how to play our system and is committed to our system. Our strength is that we know who we have and we
know what we do well."
He notes, "There are three areas that I think we need to work on this year. By the records that we have found, last year we
had the most shots taken in Wheaton College history. But since they have been keeping shots on goal as a statistic we had the
lowest percentage of shots on goal. So we spent a lot of time in the offseason about what it means to finish properly. That is a
big emphasis and another emphasis is personal responsibility defensively, especially in the midfield. The third thing that has to
happen is that our second group has to perform well. I need four or five of the second team guys to show us that they can help
us win against the best competition."
"Matt Paprocki is going to be our starter in goal this year," notes Giuliano. Paprocki saw time in net in five matches last season,
posting a 0.88 goals against average, with three shutouts to his
credit. "What I love about Matt is that he is a good shot stopper,
but beyond that, he is so aggressive off of his line, getting balls
before they even have the opportunity to be shot. That is where
he helps us a lot," concludes the Thunder mentor.
Giuliano says of his defense, "We know who the probable
first four are in the back line, but we need a couple of the other
guys to step up. Reed Bartley was in essence a starter back
there last year and we return a three-year starter in Stephen
Fernandes. Ben Bakke is a transfer from Creighton, one of the
top Division I programs in America. And we played Jon Clark
back there on a regular basis last year and really loved what we
saw. He is going to do a great job back there and can give us a
lot of offensive firepower from that position. Those are the four
most likely players in the back. That is a lot of pace in the back
and it is a lot of offensive ability."
Bakke comes to Wheaton from Creighton University where
he spent his freshman season. Bakke was a highly regarded
club and high school soccer player out of Minneapolis, Minn.
Jon Clark played in every match last season as a sophomore.
Bartley saw considerable time as a freshman in 2013 and Fernandes enters his third season as a starting defender for the

All-American honors as a sophomore in 2013.

Giuliano states, "In the midfield we will have Elliot Borge, Marshall Hollingsworth (PICTURED LEFT) and Adam Blackman
so we have two All-Americans and a player in Elliot that many of my colleagues have said may be the best ball handler in the
country. That is a very good midfield right there. In addition to those guys, I can't overstate how far Brendan Finnerty came as a
player in the spring. If Finnerty continues what we saw last fall and spring then his minutes are going to explode. That gives us
four great options in the midfield and Mitch Grove and some others that could also play there. We may even move Jon Clark up
now and then to give us a spark."
Hollingsworth earned Third Team NSCAA All-American recognition last year as a sophomore. He tallied five goals with four
assists last season, registering three game-winning goals. Blackman, a 2012 NSCAA All-American, registered 10 goals with six
assists last season. Borge played in every match as a sophomore last season, with three assists and one goal.
Giuliano says of his forwards, "Up top we have Jordan Golz, Stephen Golz and Noah Anthony (PICTURED LEFT) as Noah
transitions from defense to offense." Stating of Anthony, "Noah has been a great team-first guy, because he has always wanted

2014 WHEATON THUNDER SOCCER

to be at forward or midfield and he has played in the back because that is what
we needed for two years. It is very thrilling for us to give him the opportunity in his
senior year to play where he does his best stuff. We think he will be devastating
out there." Anchoring Wheaton's defense last season, Anthony scored five goals
and distributed a team-high eight assists.
Stephen Golz had a breakout sophomore season in 2013 with 15 goals and
five assists. "How do you follow a 15-goal season like the one Stephen had last
year? To score 15 goals against our schedule is a spectacular amount. We are
hopeful that he can continue that," says the head coach.
Jordan Golz appeared in every match for the Thunder in 2013 with five goals
and five assists. Giuliano notes, "Jordan didn't have a completely typical season
for him last year. He was second on the team in scoring in the two years before
that, but he was still a great player last year and we think he will be better this
year. He is coming off a very healthy summer."
Continuing up front Giuliano mentions, "We think Max Carey, Josh Greene
and Trevor Adams can give us some depth up front. We have some other guys
like Mason Duling that can give us some help there."
Giuliano says of many of the team's newcomers, "We don't know exactly what
roles the freshmen will have in their first year. However, if you look back at last
year we knew we would have injuries and we did, but fortunately we had some
depth to help us out. Do we have that depth this year? We are about to find
out. These guys, along with some of the returning players, have to step up and
show that we do." He adds, "Cole Lenderink is somebody I am excited about.
He played at a high level as a central defender, but he also led the nation in
scoring as a high school forward. He's a big, strong and fast guy that we can go
either direction with." Lenderink was a three-time All State player at Scottsdale
Christian Academy in Arizona, scoring 39 goals in his senior year and 90 during
his four years of high school.
Giuliano concluded, "I want these guys to experience a once in a lifetime

tion. That's not just a clich to us- it's our highest goal. For if these boys do that,
then our fans and our opponents will see the One that we serve.

2014 WHEATON THUNDER SOCCER

The Paul Avila Memorial Award

Paul Avila was a native of Springfield,

Pa., where he graduated high school in
1966. He accepted Jesus Christ as his
personal Savior on March 14, 1959.
Avila had never visited Wheaton College
before his parents, Rev. and Mrs. Manuel
Avila, brought him to campus to begin
his freshman year. A Christian teacher at
Springfield High School had recommended
Wheaton as an outstanding Christian college and for its fine soccer program.
Avila played on the first soccer team ever
at Springfield High and was a member of
the varsity team for two years. His high
school coach, Dick Dietrich wrote to the
Avila family after Paul's death in 1972,
"Paul will be remembered for his sincerity, positive influence on his teammates,
his strong desire to win, dedication, and
total commitment to the game. He applied
the same traits to life itself. His friends
benefitted by being exposed to that type
of example. Paul met life's challenges with
courage and enthusiasm."
At Wheaton, Paul won All-MIIC honors,
scoring 14 goals as a freshman on an 110-3 team in 1966, and participated for the
Wheaton diving team. He sat out 1967 with
a career-threatening knee injury suffered
in a pre-season collision with a goalkeeper
on a play that Paul scored on.
When coach Bob Baptista spoke at
Paul's memorial service, he remembered
Paul's "vital contribution" to the 1967 team,
and how he cheered on his teammates and
his "courage and refusal to quit" although
unable to play.
Paul returned for the 1968 season, scoring 14 goals and earning All-MIIC honors
while playing for a 10-1-2 team. As a senior
in 1969, he was selected to the All-MIIC
and All-Midwest Region teams when he
scored 15 goals to lead Wheaton to its third
consecutive NCAA Midwest Regional title.
His teammates selected their captain as
their Most Outstanding Offensive Player.
Avila recorded 43 career goals, with 102
points and was the career goals and assists
leader at the time of his graduation.
Paul Avila graduated from Wheaton
College in 1970 with a bachelor's degree
in psychology, had been married for four
months to the former Jorie Hultgren, and
had begun graduate studies at the Trinity
Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield,
when doctors at the Mayo Clinic discovered
that he had reticulum cell carcinoma. Paul
continued to serve as he stayed in the Hartfield home when he was in Minneapolis.
Although very ill, Paul would wrestle with

Hartfield's sons, leave the room to vomit,

and then return to play. Through 18 months
of Avila's friendship with Dr. Hartfield, the
boys never knew that Paul was ill.
Dr. Hartfield also spoke at Paul's memorial service, calling Paul an "eloquent interlude," which to him meant "an exposure or
experience that speaks forcibly of life, of
living, and of a lifetime." Even though he
knew Avila just 18 months, Hartfield was
touched dramatically by his life. "Paul saw
in living the truth that comes to those who
know Jesus Christ and draw on His support
for the present and the future. Paul taught
the possibility of living above infirmity, the
privilege of loving a stranger and the reality of loving a treasured part of our family
with the unwavering conviction, 'We shall
be together again.' "

Paul Avila, 1948-1972

As cancer metastasized through his
body, Paul was forced into the hospital
several times. He entered the hospital on
Sunday, Oct. 8, and died on Oct. 10, 1972,
at age 24.
Next to the Paul Avila Memorial Award
hangs a wall plaque which bears Paul's
photograph and a list of his soccer honors.
The words at the bottom of the plaque
read, "His final goal achieved the greatest
victory," taken from II Timothy 4:7.
Each season since 1974, a Wheaton
soccer player has been presented with

Paul Avila
MEMORIAL AWARD
Presented to a Wheaton
College Soccerman
who best exemplifies the
Desire, Dedication, Devotion
which was displayed by
PAUL AVILA

One 17-year old boy, a neighbor of the

Avilas in Springfield who looked up to Paul,
wrote a poem entitled, "My Brother and My
Friend," which was read at Paul's memorial
service. Paul's life stirred the boy so much
that he made the decision to carry on Paul's
goal of spreading the Gospel.
Bob Baptista, at Avila's memorial service,
summarized Paul's life this way: "Through
his soccer experience, Paul exhibited
boundless enthusiasm, determination,
drive, courage and refusal to quit, but
more than that Paul had a firm faith in God,
unshakeable confidence that God directed
his life, words of testimony about God's
goodness and the testimony of his life,
which confirmed his verbal testimony."

WHEATON THUNDER
SOCCER
JOE2014
BEAN
STADIUM

The Wheaton College men's and women's soccer programs play their games in one of the finest facilities in
all of NCAA Division III. In 2006 East McCully Field, the longtime home of Wheaton soccer was re-named Joe
Bean Stadium. The Wheaton men's soccer team moved from Lawson Field to the current home of Wheaton
soccer in the 1965 season, and the women's program began as a club sport at the stadium in 1987 and
achieved varsity status in 1988.
The field, located in the southeastern corner of the campus, near the corner of President St. and College
Ave., is of maximum regulation dimensions (120 yards by 75 yards). Lights were installed in 1995 to allow
night competition, new bleachers and a retaining wall was installed in 2002, along with a new entrance and
awnings. A new state-of-the-art artificial grass surface was installed in 2004 year to allow the soccer
programs to play in inclement weather and not damage the playing surface.
Across from the renovated north-side bleachers, which seat 2,000 fans, are the team and press areas on
the south side of the field. Both teams sit sit in covered dugouts. In addition, the retaining fence behind the
east goal has been extended upward, and the entire fence is covered with a wind barrier during the season.
Through the years, Joe Bean Stadium has also been the site of a number of memorable men's soccer
matches. It was on Dec. 1, 1984, at East McCully Field that Wheaton won the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer
National Championships in a hard-fought 2-1 triple overtime win over Brandeis. The 1997 Wheaton men's
soccer team won the South Central Regional and its third-round game over Ohio Wesleyan at home and went
on to win the National Championship. In 1998 Wheaton played its national-record 66th match without a loss,
a 3-0 overtime win over Centre, at East McCully. Wheaton has won the invitational 14 times in 25 years and
10 of the last 13 years and has played in the finals 20 of the last 21 years.
In 1998 the Wheaton women's soccer team hosted a NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Regional for the
first time. In 1999 Wheaton hosted two NCAA Tournament matches, including the first National Quarterfinal in
the history of the women's soccer program. East McCully Field was the site of the Central Regional in 2000,
2001 and 2003, with the Thunder winning the 2001 event. In 2004 Wheaton hosted a Second Round match
and a National Sectional en route to the program's first NCAA Championship. The womens soccer team
hosted First and Second Round matches as well as a Sectional in 2006 as the program won its second
National Championship.
The first professional match at Joe Bean Stadium took place in July of 2001, when the Chicago Fire hosted
the Pittsburgh Riverhounds in a U.S. Open Cup match. More than 2,500 saw the Fire pull out a 3-2 double
overtime victory.
