THE ASSEMBLY IN INFANT EDUCATION

a. What is an assembly?
The assembly is the base to work in preschool. The assembly in Infant Education is a meeting
moment between the teacher and the pupil. It is a moment to express feelings, ideas, to tell
about their experiences, to work routines It is a moment to learn to learn, to learn to do and
to learn to be. The assembly makes pupils develop their social skills, which are necessary and
rewarding for them.

b. The integrated curriculum and the assembly

When planning the activities and parts of the assembly, we must take into account the
knowledge areas of the Spanish curriculum as we have to work following the integrated
curriculum. So, we have to give a response to in the assembly to these areas and the curricular
elements to be taught in these areas.
Self- knowledge and personal autonomy:
Knowledge of the environment:
Language: Communication and representation:
Besides we include the learning of a second language in the same process. We can work
English during the assembly in connection with the curricular areas.
c.

Social skills worked through the assembly.

The integrated curriculum defined some social skills which pupils have to be able to do at the
end of Infant Education directly worked through the assemblies:

Class routines.
Greetings and goodbyes.
Feelings.
Personal hygiene and healthy habits.
Behavioral patterns.
Sharing and participating.
Showing respect

d. The assembly is used not only as the morning circle, but as the base for all the English
lessons.
e. We have to work routines in every English lesson.

Parts of the assembly (45 minutes lesson).

There are four different moments in the assembly, considering the assembly the start point of
the day.
Reception (5 minutes):
After arriving at the class pupils leave their bags and their coats and put on their smocks.
When they are dressed they sit down on the meeting area. The teacher greets and places them
taking into account different aspects such as mixing boys and girls and mixing the quiet pupils
with the most active ones in order to control them.

Pupils interventions (5 minutes):

When all are in the meeting area in a circle the teacher sits in the center of that circle so that
every pupil can see her. Then, the teacher invites the assistant of the day to sit next to her.
Pupils share their experiences and whatever they want with the rest of the class. They raise
their hands for turn taking. The pupils speak Spanish, it doesnt matter, but the teacher always
speaks English:
Please, raise your hand to speak! Its Anas turn! Keep silence, please!

Meeting routines (15 minutes):

There are many repetitive actions that once assimilated have to be changed, if we want pupils
to go through new challenges. Routines are very important, but variety is required too.

Introduction of the theme or works that are going to be done (20 minutes):
It depends on the goals the teacher wants to get. Now its time for storytelling, psychomotor
activities, games, videos
