Course Content: The focus of this reading class is to move our students from
being successful readers to lifelong readers. Middle school is a transitional period
for our students. In this course our students will be actively engaged in the
reading process regardless of what type of material they are given to read. Our
goal is to have our students become college and career ready for their journey
in life.
Reading Focus: vocabulary: context clues, word relationship, multiple meanings,
analyze words/text- reading application: authors purpose, main idea, relevant
details, cause/effect, text structure, compare/contrast, inference- literary
analysis: genres, character development, elements of story (plot development),
figurative language, text features- informational text: textual evidence,
reference and research, etc
Required Textbooks: (supplied by the school to each student)
A novel of personal choice which must be with students each day for
Sustained Silent Reading as part of their daily warm-up activity and SSR
grading on Mondays. Students must walk into class with their current SSR
novel that they are reading on Mondays for a grade and every other day
of the week as a part of their daily warm-up activity. Please have an extra
book available in backpack at all times.
Class Novel: we will be doing novel studies in class quarterly different from
their personal SSR Novel. The school will provide these books.
Classroom Expectations:
All students will come PREPARED to class with the following:
1. Novel (which can be checked out in our media center)
2. Reading Folder, college ruled paper, black or blue pen, pencils,
highlighter and any materials necessary upon request.
3. Journal Folder (composition or 1 subject spiral)-to be kept in the
class
4. Agenda/Planner of your choice (can be purchased at our
bookstore)

All students will be PROMPT to class:


1. All students are expected to be in their assigned seat and
working when the late bell rings or will be marked TARDY.
**4th Tardy-STUDENT DETENTION (before or after school only)
2. All students will be RESPECTFUL
3. All students will be RESPONSIBLE and TAKE OWNERSHIP for their
action.
Grading System:
o Classwork/Homework
o Projects/Tests/Quizzes
o Organization (folder check)/Planner
Daily Homework: Students are required to read for twenty minutes every
night, complete their reading logs and have their reading logs signed at the end
of the week by parent/guardian. Reading Logs are due every Monday the
following week. Reading Log assignments vary and will change accordingly.
Other homework assignments will vary throughout the year.
