Dustin Johnson smiles on the ninth green during the rain-delayed second round of the U.S. Open golf championship at
Oakmont Country Club on Friday.

U.S. OPEN

Johnson ties Landry

for lead at 4-under

OAKMONT

Minutes after walking off

his final green of the day,
Dustin Johnson said Oakmont Country Club is one
of the toughest courses
hes ever played.
Although he didnt seem
to have too much trouble
with it.
Johnson went on a torrid
streak and made history
doing so, putting together a
bogey-free first round and
a not-so-shabby second to
tie clubhouse leader Andrew Landry at 4-under par
on Friday at the U.S. Open.
Johnson became the first
player to post a bogey-free
round in an Oakmonthosted U.S. Open since
Loren Roberts in 1994. The
No. 6 player in the world
was 3-under par in the first
round, and 1-under in his
second.
It was a long day today,
but I felt like I played really
solid all day for all 36
holes, Johnson said. Very
pleased with how it went.

OPEN
handled 36 straight to
qualify for the U.S. Open at
sectionals.
And I played better in
the second round then,
Howe said of his 5-under
performance after posting
2-under in the first round.
Unfortunately for Howe,
Oakmont tends to take a
lot out of a golfer.

There was a reason why

Johnson had 27 consecutive bogey-free holes: he
was hitting greens. The
South Carolina native rattled off a run of 25 straight
greens hit in regulation,
spanning from the first to
the second round.
He was solid off the tee,
too, hitting 11 of 14 fairways in the second round.
Mentally youve got to
make sure you stay sharp
all day, Johnson said.
You cant go to sleep on
any shot out here.
After joining nearly half
the field in completing 36
holes in one day, Johnson
will start his third round on
Saturday afternoon at a
time still to be determined.
Meanwhile, Landry
played only one hole Friday, making one putt that
was previously suspended
with the rest of play on late
Thursday afternoon. The
28-year-old Texan is
scheduled to tee off his
second round at 7:11 a.m.
Saturday.
While Landry was on and
off the course in a matter
of minutes, he made a

notable impression on
Friday, setting the record
for the lowest first-round
score in U.S. Open at Oakmont history. Landry, who
is making his major championship debut, was clinical
with his 4-under 66, tallying six birdies to just two
bogeys.
And as for the last birdie,
one he had to wait 15 hours
to take, one thatd make
history, Landry wasnt
overly nervous.
I just pretty much
thought about it this morning, the No. 624 player in
the world said. I didnt,
like, dream about it.
With Johnson and Landry co-leaders at 4-under,
Lee Westwood is in sole
possession of third at 3under. Westwood finished
off a round of 67 on Friday
morning, and will take the
tee box for his second set
of 18 at 8:28 a.m. Saturday.
Three players Sergio
Garcia, Scott Piercy and
Shane Lowry are 2-under. While Lowry begins
his second round Saturday
morning, Garcia and Piercy
both shot even in the sec-

While he birdied the

par-4 18th, Howe had a
double bogey on the 11th
and bogeyed the 2nd and
15th.
The course conditions, as
they changed throughout
the morning and afternoon,
did no favors to even the
best of golfers.
Thankfully for Foley, he
didnt have to deal with
ridiculously fast greens. His
day was done at 9:30 a.m.
Sure, the greens will
likely be just as fast, if not

faster, on Saturday. But at

least Foley had all day
Friday to mentally prepare
and rest after a stop-and-go
Thursday.
Foley said it was frustrating to practice on a firm
course Monday, Tuesday
and Wednesday, only for it
to be soft on Thursday.
At that point you have
to adapt as quickly as you
can, the 29-year-old New
Jersey native said. Hopefully the course will get
back to where it should

ond round after each posting a 68 in the first round.

Despite a somewhat
erratic second round he
hit only 5 of 14 fairways
Garcia finished the day in
style, sinking a 51-foot putt
to save par on the 9th.
Im very happy to finish
at 2-under, Garcia said. I
didnt play that great this
afternoon, but I thought I
scrambled nicely and made
a couple big putts when I
needed to.
As impressive as Johnson
was in his 36 holes, there
was a collection of stars
that didnt handle Oakmont as gracefully.
With three holes to go in
his second round, world
No. 1 Jason Day finished
5-over par. Also ending the
day early was Phil Mickelson (7-over through 16),
Justin Rose (6-over through
16), and Henrik Stenson
(9-over through 16).
While those big names
still have to finish Saturday
morning, some of golfs
stars havent even started
their second rounds yet.
Jordan Spieth (2-over),
Rickie Fowler (6-over),
Danny Willett (5-over) and
Rory McIlroy (7-over) hope
to improve their scores
enough Saturday morning
to make the cut and
eventually make a run
toward the top of the leaderboard.

be.
After completing 10
holes on Thursday at 5over, Foley did well to
finish out the remaining
eight without conceding a
stroke. He had two birdies,
four pars and two bogeys
on Friday morning.
One of those birdies
came on the hardest hole
of the first round.
The par-4 ninth played at
a 4.526 average and induced 14 double bogeys,
the most of any hole all

under the Friday night

lights.
The North offense struggled with minus-10 yards
rushing, augmented by a
couple fumbles, and 193
yards of total offense.
Obviously we lost, but it
was probably one of the
most fun games Ive had,
said State College lineman
Wade Bonsell. Playing
with a bunch of different
people was so fun, being
out there and getting in the
game, forming the relationships and watching it all
come together, it was pretty sweet.
The participants were
told before they even put
the pads on for the first
time together at the beginning of the week it would
be a memorable experience.
It was probably one of
the best weeks of football
of my entire life, said
Kresovich, who will be
enrolling at Penn State this
fall to study broadcast
journalism. We had a lot
of fun, coming together to
play football, theres nothing better.
The quarterback-receiver
combination from Central
Martinsburg High School of
Noah Benton to Justin
Helsel proved to be lethal,
producing three touchdown
strikes. Benton was 9 of 15
for 210 yards, while Helsel
caught eight passes for 165
yards.
That passing combination produced two long
strikes in the second quarter. The first came on a
58-yard catch by Helsel,
jumping over the back of
defensive back Jacob Anderson of PhilipsburgOsceola to snare the ball at
the 25 before running the
rest of the way. The second
was a sideline strike to
Helsel with 2:44 left in the
half.
A penalty after the play
moved the ball back on the
ensuing kickoff, and another on the return helped set
the North up at the South
30-yard line to start the
drive, and the North capitalized with a five-play
drive capped by an Isabella
3-yard run. Alexander
caught the 2-point conversion.
Its hard with, what,
four days of practices to
put stuff together? said
Alexander, who will be
enrolling at Liberty and
joining the football team
there in a few weeks. I
think we did a good job

with the amount of time we

had. Its an all-star game,
just to have fun. But its
frustrating because I hate
to lose.
The half ended in crazy
fashion, with five attempts
at a field goal for the South,
with an inadvertent whistle
negating a blocked kick,
and penalties wiping out
other attempts before Evan
Lingafelt connected from
29 yards out.
The Benton-to-Helsel
combo struck again in the
third from 16 yards away to
lengthen the lead, but on
the ensuing kick Curwensvilles Newkirk sprinted 87
yards for a touchdown and
a 24-15 margin.
Altoonas Nick Hayden
then plunged in from the 1
for the South to add to the
lead.
Huntingdons Hudson
Speck capped the scoring
with a 37-yard interception
return for a score, his second pick of the night, swiping the ball from Kresovich.
I hit my hand off one of
the big guys helmets on
the other team, Kresovich
said. As soon as I threw it
I felt it. It was a curve ball.
A pair of State College
athletes were listed on the
roster early in the week but
did not practice or take
part in running back Jordan
Misher and receiver Kellin
Valentine.
It was kind of frustrating we couldnt run the ball
as well as we thought we
could, Bonsell said. It
clicked at times, and other
times it didnt.
Notes: The Bishop Guilfoyle team was honored at
halftime for winning the
PIAA Class A title last
season. A number of
scholarships were given out
after the game. Among the
recipients were Penns Valleys Chase Collison (Jack
Bailey Memorial Scholarship) and State Colleges
Mark Weakland (M & T
Bank Scholarship).

day.
In fact, only seven players birdied the ninth in the
first 18: Foley, round-leader
Andrew Landry, 2007 U.S.
Open at Oakmont champion Angel Cabrera, twotime Masters winner Bubba
Watson, Lee Westwood,
Byeong-Hun An and Jon
Rahm.
To do it on a hole like
that, its a nice way to end
the round, Foley said.
As for the in-between,
the three-time All-Amer-

ican and Penn State recordholder for most tournament championships (six)
didnt necessarily light the
course ablaze. In his first
10 holes, Foley had six
bogeys.
Even still, Foley is in an
alright spot.
Its not exactly where I
wanted to be, Foley said.
But its a U.S. Open, and
its Oakmont.
And with a chance to
make the cut, Foley will
take it.
