IMPORTANT

This maintenance manual must be in the custody of person/s concerned with

erection, operation and maintenance of the PREMIUM FLUID COUPLING.
To effectively utilise PREMIUM FLUID COUPLING, it is most important that
coupling is properly installed, safely operated and correctly maintained as per the
conditions specified in this manual. The recommendations contained in this
manual must be properly understood and implemented towards erection,
operation and maintenance of PREMIUM FLUID COUPLING by appropriately
qualified and trained personnel.
Any similar instructions for the overall plant in which the equipment is to be
incorporated, which have an influence on the equipment application, must be
strictly followed.
Statutory and local requirement concerning work practices, safety and / or health
precautions must be observed.

PREVENTIVE MEASURES

= To protect the person who handle the rotating machinery, it is advisable to fit
suitable safety guard on it.
= This protective guard should be designed in such manner that escaped hot oil should
not comeout from it & sprayed on surroundings.
= Fluid coupling are supplied with thermal safety device as fusible plug for overload
protection. At the time of fusible plug blow of, hot oil escapes from coupling at high
velocity which is dangerous for human beings.
= Fluid coupling are designed & supplied for application rated based on the ordering
data for failsafe operation at rated speed & power which does not allow over
speeding of coupling than designed speed.
= All bolts should be periodically properly tightened to avoid accident due to loosening
of bolts.

PREMIUM
FLUID COUPLINGS
DELAY FILLED CHAMBER TYPE

A) TYPE HTC
Hollow traction fluid coupling
Hollow Shaft Coupling is used in conjunction
with standard squirrel cage induction motor to
provide light load start up and smooth controlled
acceleration of heavy inertia drive. 'HTC'
Coupling without delayed filling chamber used
when overload protection is required. These are
normally recommended for starting torque
requirement of 170% of rated torque.

1. INTRODUCTION
PREMIUM DELAYED FILL TYPE FLUID COUPLING
(DFC) is Hydrokinetic power transmission device,
wherein power is transmitted from input to
output shaft by transference of kinetic energy of
a circulating fluid. It has 2 power transmitting
elements, the Impeller and Runner, both have
straight radial vanes, which form the working
circuit. Power is transmitted from Impeller to
Runner by a vortex of oil between the vanes of
these elements, the Impeller acting as a pump
and the Runner as turbine.

2. CONSTRUCTION
The construction of the fluid coupling (DFC) is
shown in typical illustration in Fig. 1. The main
components are
- Impeller, Casing, Chamber, Flexible Coupling.
- Runner & Shaft.
The Impeller, Runner, Casing and Chamber are of
high tensile aluminum alloy. The Impeller and
Runner both have a straight radial vanes. The
Runner & Shaft are carried in ball bearings located
in the Casing and Impeller. There is no mechanical
connection between Impeller and Runner.
The amount of oil in the coupling may be varied
over a wide range, to give adjustment of
acceleration and overload torque.
The Hollow Shaft Coupling without Chamber is
called as 'HTC' Coupling.

HTC
Sizes available: 204 - 1040
B) TYPE 'DFC'
Delayed filling chamber fluid coupling
Pembril 'DFC' Delayed Fill Coupling is basically
hollow shaft coupling has a delayed filling
chamber. When the coupling is stationary, a
portion of the oil collects in this chamber and
this can only return to the working circuit via
small ports when the coupling is started up.
Filling and draining of delayed filling chamber is
dependent upon the input speed and takes place
via engineered ports. 'DFC' Couplings provides
almost no load condition on starting by
considerably reducing the starting torque.

3. TYPES
Types of constant speed Fluid Coupling
manufactured are as under:
: HTC
: SSTC
: DFC
: SDFC
: WDFC
: BRHTC
: DFP
: BRDFC

'DFC' Couplings are recommended to limit the

starting torque to 140% of rated torque.

Sizes available 290 - 580

C) TYPE 'WDFC'
Widen delayed filling chamber fluid coupling
This design of delayed fill fluid coupling is
similar to that of 'DFC' type, has a wider delayed
filling chamber. This configuration is most
suitable to limit maximum coupling torque to a
low value during start up without compromising
on minimum slip at rated duty. 'WDFC' are
recommended to limit the starting torque upto
120% of rated with low rated slip.

E) TYPE 'SSTC'
Solid shaft traction fluid coupling
This is similar to that of 'HTC' type has solid
shaft, and coupling is connected to the driving
and driven machine via flexible couplings. The
main feature is that the coupling can be removed
from the installation without disturbing
alignments of driving and driven machine. Break
Drum / Fly wheel can be incorporated as per
requirements.

This is similar to that of 'DFC' Type, has solid
shaft and coupling is connected to the driving
and driven machines via flexible coupling. The
main feature is that coupling can be removed

4. FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION

Sizes available: 290 - 1040

The DFC Coupling is basically constant speed/fill

fluid coupling. When the coupling is stationary
the part of fluid collects in the chamber and
shall only be transferred to the main circuit via,
small ports when the coupling is started up. This
provides an effective relief to the prime mover
during starting.
Fluid vortex is necessary for the transmission of
torque, and this is produced by a difference in
rotational speed between the Impeller and
Runner, which is known as 'SLIP', as a result of
this slip, the coupling warms up in operation.
The functional operation during start up and
running is shown in fig. 2 (See on next page)

G) TYPE 'BRHTC'
Brake drum hollow shaft fluid coupling
This design is runner drive always, comprises of
Brake Drum. These are recommended for lesser
power transmission than the 'HTC' model.
Sizes available: 290 - 740

5. MOUNTING
5.1. Coupling when supplied with hollow shaft
(htc, dfc & wdfc)
The HTC & DFC type coupling has a hollow shaft
with bore and keyway duly machined to suit the
driven machine/Prime mover shaft. The drive to
the fluid coupling from the prime mover is
through the input hub of a flexible coupling or
through hollow shaft of coupling depending upon
mounting configuration.

BRHTC

H) TYPE 'BRDFC'
Brake drum delayed filling chamber fluid
coupling
This Design is runner drive always, comprises of
brake Drum. These are recommended for slightly
lower power than the 'DFC' model.

5.2 Coupling when supplied with solid shaft

(sdfc, sstc)
This type of coupling has a solid shaft which is

connected to the machine via Multi Disc Unit

Assembly. The weight of the fluid coupling unit is
thus shared between the shaft of the motor and
driven machine. The resilience of the mounting
at each end caters for a certain degree of
misalignment between motor and driven
machine shaft.

RUNNING

5.3 Coupling when supplied with pulley (dfp)

The standard unit is supplied with 'V' Belt Pulley
or alternatively, it may be sent without pulley,
suitable for taking the customer's own pulley, or
chain sprocket. The Hollow Shaft of the DFP is
mounted directly on the motor shaft with a key.
The coupling assembly to be secured on the
Prime mover shaft by means of a bolt screwed
into a tapped hole provided on the prime mover
shaft, called Tie-Bolt.

Note, However, it is necessary for the lining-up of

the motor to the driven machine to be carried
out with care during installation, as if the
machines are appreciably out-of line, the load on
all bearing will be increased, and the useful life
of the whole installation will tend to be
shortened.

5.4 Coupling when supplied with brake drum

(brdfc, brhtc)

For the same reason, it is important that any

bedplate that is used to support the machines is
of sufficiently stiff construction, to ensure that it
will not be destroyed excessively if it is pulled
down on to an uneven foundation.

The coupling with brake drum is generally a

runner drive, where in drive to the fluid coupling
from prime mover is through the Hollow Shaft of
coupling and input hub of flexible coupling will
be mounted on the machine shaft.

SHAFT LOCATION
It is recommended that the shaft of the driven
machine is provided with end location. The
motor shaft may be left free to float if required
may be located. In the latter case, make user
that the distance between the input half
coupling (motor side) and output half coupling
(driven machine side) is set accurately during
installation to avoid failure of multidisc
assembly.

6. INSTALLATION
6.1 Unpack the wooden case and clean the bore
and keyway of coupling and input hub using
kerosene/petrol and light emery paper. Clean
input shaft of driven machine, motor shaft and fit
keys. Make sure there are no light spots or burrs.

INPUT HALF COUPLING

Perfect alignment of prime mover and driven

machine facilitates smooth running of Fluid
Coupling resulting long life of the drive.
Permissible mis-alignment for various flexible
coupling Shown in Fig. 5

7.1.HTC/DFC/WDFC
After installation of fluid coupling hollow shaft
on the driven machine, arrest driven machine in
its final position, by means of firm tightening of
foundation bolts. Push the motor duly mounted
with flexible coupling up to the driven machine
axis to allow motor to be correctly align. The
motor height should be adjusted by means of
appropriate shims.

mover and the driven machine. hence it is

necessary to set the, prime mover, fluid coupling
and the driven machine in one line.
Normally the driven machine, such as a gearbox,
is assumed to be fixed in position and lining up
the drive becomes a matter of bringing the
motor shaft into line with the input shaft, using
the fluid coupling in between as an 'carden
shaft'.
This operation is most easily done in two stages
as follows:
(a) By moving the motor up-and-down and
sideways, bring the shaft of the fluid coupling in
line with the input shaft of the driven machine
(Fig. A).

7.2 BRDFC/BRHTC
After installation of Flexible Coupling with brake
Drum on the Driven machine, arrest driven
machine in final position, by means of firm
tightening of foundation bolts. Push the motor
duly mounted with hollow shaft of coupling up to
the driven machine to allow motor to be correctly
aligned. The motor height should be adjusted by
means of appropriate shims.
7.3 SSTC/SDFC
These fluid couplings are provided with flexible
couplings at input and output ends, so that it
can act as a carden shaft between the prime

GAP BETWEEN HALF COUPLINGS TO BE EQUAL

TO TOP, BOTTOM AND BOTH SIDE WITHIN LIMITS

Misalignment will be shown by variation in the

gap between tine two half-couplings of Multi
Disc Unit assembly when measured at top,
bottom and both sides. Continue moving the
motor until variation in the gap at the four points
comes within tolerance given in following table:

fixed in position and lining up the drive becomes

a matter of bringing the prime mover shaft in
line with the input shaft of the driven machine,
using the fluid coupling in between. This is done
in two stages.
i) By moving the motor up and down and
sideways, bring the shaft of the fluid coupling
into line with the input shaft of the driven
machine. Misalignment will be seen by variation
in the axial displacement.

Total Tolerance
0.004 in (0.10mm)
0.006 in (0.15 mm)
0.008 in (0.20 mm)

Normally SSTC & SDFC type fluid couplings are

supplied with flexible coupling on input side and
Multi Disc Unit on output side.

(b) The shaft of the fluid coupling now being in

line with the shaft of the driven machine, within
the required limits, the position of the free end
of the motor must now be adjusted to bring the
deflection of the flexible coupling to an
acceptable working value. To measure the
deflection of the flexible coupling, clamp clock
gauge as shown on the head of one of the bolts
(Fig. B).

WARNING: Ensure that axial displacement

should be within the specified limits as shown in
fig. 5 for flexible couplings.
7.4 Locking Plates and adjusting bolts on the
foundation are an advantage for sideward
adjustments. Align prime mover and coupling as
shown in fig. 5.

Turn the fluid coupling by hand and note the

clock gauge readings. Move the free end of the
motor until the variation in the reading, taken
over a complete revolution, is within the total
tolerance given in the following table, showing
that the motor shaft is now in line with the fluid
coupling shaft.

7.5 DFP
DFP type coupling is sent out as a complete unit,
normally with standard V-belt pulley sheave. If a
V-belt pulley sheave has been provided by the
customer, this can be fitted without dismantling
the unit. The bore of the pulley should have been
machined to given transition fit on the pulley
sleeve.
After passing on the pulley, secure by solid
dowels (for size see table below). Peen metal
round dowel holes to secure. Finally drill and tap
hole for socket head point screw to size given.

The last operation may have disturbed the

alignment of the fluid coupling shaft to the
driven machine shaft by a small amount.
Therefore check the gap between the two halfcouplings again, and make any adjustment
necessary by moving the motor.
Normally the driven machine is assumed to be

8. OIL FILLING OF THE

FLUID COUPLING

The other properties, not shown, should conform

to those of a similar high grade mineral oil.

Oil filling has considerable influence on the

torque transmitted by the fluid coupling.
The quantity of oil to be filled into respective
coupling is given in the first page of this text.
Exact quantity to be filled should be determined
from the actual power transmitted or by
measuring coupling slip and motor current.

IMPORTANT: Great care must be taken to ensure

that oil of a different grade is never added to
that already in the coupling and that a mixture
of oils is never used.
8.1 How to fill the Fluid Coupling.
To get the trouble free operation of the fluid
coupling, it is necessary that the coupling is
filled with correct quantity of oil.

NOTE: The more filling volume, the more load on

motor during starting and the lesser slip for the
same torque transmission and thus the more
stalling torque.

WARNING : Pembril Coupling may only be filled

to a maximum of 85 % of their total capacity.
No attempt should be made to top up the filling
by rotating secondary parts or by pouring oil
through the fusible plug bore. Since any excess
oil, when heated up, would tend to build up an in
admissible pressure inside the coupling while in
operation, which results damage to the coupling.
Filling and checking of the oil level are carried
out as follows:
Horizontal installed coupling:

Fusible Plug:
A Fusible Plug 43 is incorporated in the coupling
and the purpose of which is to provide an
additional safeguard to the motor and prevent
overheating in the rare event of a stall or failure
of the motor overload trip. The Plug contains a
fusible alloy that melts at a set temperature and
allows the oil in the fluid coupling to escape,
thus removing the load from the motor and
allowing it to run free. Different set temperature
Fusible Plugs are provided along with fluid
coupling as per the requirements.
The Fusible Plugs are normally supplied along
with Delayed Fill Fluid Coupling is 140 Deg C+/5 Deg. C (248 Deg.F)

5. Tighten the Filling Plug.

Checking:
1. Remove the Filling Plug.
2. Rotate coupling until the marks (see 4 of
above) are lined up.
3. Top up, if necessary.
4. Close the filling plug.

IMPORTANT:
On no account the fusible plug be refilled with
ordinary solder. Only fusible plug supplied by
PREMIUM ENERGY TRANSMISSION LTD. should
be fitted.

With the multiple motor drives, the oil fillings of

the different fluid coupling must be matched so
as to obtain proper load distribution.
WARNING:
Load matching check should still be made even
when the motors used are identical and the
same coupling are used.
Such load distribution can best be achieved by
connecting an Ammeter in series with each
motor. If the readings on the Ammeters differ,
the oil fillings should be corrected until each
motor draws approximately the same current.

WARNING:
(i) The fusible plug must not be replaced for
solid screw under any circumstances.
(ii) If the coupling has heated up considerably or
when the fusible plugs has melted, the bolts
around the circumference i.e. Casing impeller
bolts should be tightened.
NOTE:
The guard (Protective cover) must be used to
ensure that escaping oil is directed downwards,
out of the way.

9. COMMISSIONING
The Pembril Fluid Coupling can be driven in
either direction. When the installation in
switched on for the first time it is important to
check that coupling runs in the direction as per
the requirements.
When using a fluid coupling, the squirrel cage
induction motor is usually switched on directly.
If star delta is used then the switch over from

10. MAINTENANCE
When the requirements for type, size,
installation, alignment and filling have all been
complied with, then Pembril Coupling requires
virtually no maintenance and require no

operational supervision.
The temperature is highly dependent upon the
local operation conditions vis a vis number of
starts / stops, ambient temperature. During
continuous operation, temperature should not
exceed 90 Deg. C. To provide appropriate cooling
conditions the ventilation of the fluid coupling
must not be obstructed by closed surface
protective cover guards. It is recommended that
all guards to be constructed from perforated
metal sheet.

10.6 DISMANTLING
10.6.1 HTC/DFC/WDFC/BRDFC/BRHTC
For dismantling the Fluid Coupling, the driving
machine (motor) must be disconnected and
withdrawn.
After removing the holding screws (27), the fluid
coupling can be withdrawn.

10.1 Checking tightness of bolts & alignment:

After the fluid coupling unit has been in service for
three months it is recommended that a check be
made of the tightness of all external bolts and
nuts (for recommended torque setting Sec. 10.8).

WARNING:
The withdrawal may only be made as illustrated
with the extraction bolt, never withdraw by
means of Fluid Coupling Casing.
Ensure that the extraction bolt is not applied
with a bending moment, and the threads must
be lubricated.

10.2 Checking filling:

At the intervals of about 12 months, with the
fluid coupling cold, check the oil level for the
correct filing angle or volume.

It is necessary to drain the oil from the coupling

to remove it from the driven machine.
Slide out the coupling from the driven machine
(from the motor Shaft for BRDFC/BRHTC) shaft,
with the extraction bolt as shown in Fig. 7.

10.3 Oil Checking:

The oil be checked for ageing after approximately
20,000 hours of operation, and be changed if
necessary.

Remove the flexible coupling assembly using a

three legged puller. Care should be taken to
unscrew any locking screws provided to fix the
input hub to the driving machine shaft.

10.4 If the flexible element of the connecting

coupling suffers high tear and wear, the
alignment should be checked and corrected
where necessary.

Drain the oil into a suitable container by removing

the filling plugs 22 and turn the fluid coupling, by
degrees, to allow all the oil to drain out.

10.7 ASSEMBLY
The following will form a guide as the correct
sequence in which the parts are reassembled.

The withdrawal of the fluid coupling from motor

shaft may only be made as illustrated with the
extraction bolt, never withdraw by means of fluid
coupling casing.

10.7.1 Runner-Shaft Assembly. (Fig. no. 8)

Bolt the Runner 2 to the flange of the Shaft 4,
using bolts 16 and nuts 20.
10.7.2 Runner-Shaft-Casing assembly. (fig. No.9)
Press ball bearing 6 into the bearing liner. Fit
new joint 23. Press bearing liner into the bore of
the casing 3 and secure by using bolt 19.
Lower the casing assembly over runner shaft
assembly after warming of the bearing guiding
over shaft until its inner race locates on the
shoulder of the shaft 4. Arrest bearing with
external circlip 12.

Ensure that the extraction bolt is not applied

with a bending moment, as the threads must be
lubricated.
Slide out the fluid coupling from M/c shaft with
the extraction bolt shown in fig. 7.
10.6.2 SSTC/SDFC
Before removing the fluid coupling from the
drive, drain the oil from the coupling by removing
plugs 22 into a suitable container.

Fit new oil seal over shaft and secure with screw
& cover plate or into end cover as applicable.

The fluid coupling can be removed from drive

without disturbing the motor and driven
machine.

10.7.3 Casing-impeller assembly (Fig. no. 10)

Press ball bearing 5 by warming impeller bore.
Fit joint 24 on the flange of impeller with
holdtite / joining compound. Lower the Runnershaft-casing assembly over impeller. Make sure
that the assembly marks on the flanges of the
both parts in line and properly located in 3
dowel holes. When fitting casing bolts 14, use
plain washer 18 under the nut 15. Tighten the
nuts in opposite pairs evently to torque setting
given in section 10.8.

Attach shings or put in temporary packing to take

the weight of the fluid coupling. Take out bolts 24
from the semi-flexible coupling and remove multi
disc assembly 25. After removing holding screws
27, remove the fluid coupling endways and lift the
fluid coupling from the installation.

13

Fit external circlip 8 on the shaft at impeller

side. Fit new oil seal 11 in chamber. Care should
be taken to avoid damaging the seal. Make joint
on the impeller face & attach chamber to
impeller by using screws 17.

Column 1- Bolt through steel or cast iron-85%

of torque to induce load equal to 85% of
proof load.
Column 2- Bolts through aluminum- 60% of
torque to induce load equal to 85% of proof
load.

10.8 Recommended tightening torques for nut

and bolt assemblies. The tightening torque are
based on bolts, material grade 8.8 (BS 1768 EN
16 S Equivalnet).

15. STORAGE & PRESERVATION

In situation where PEMBRIL fluid couplings are
to be stored for an extended period prior to
installation, our recommendation for storage are
as follows.

15.2.3 Apply protective coating of oil soluble

rust preventative to all accessible, unpainted
surface both inside and out. We would
recommend application by spray, especially for
the internal surfaces.

15.1 GENERAL
Upon receipt, the equipment should be
inspected inside and out to ensure it is in good
condition any change to surface finish should be
rectified by cleaning affected area and repaining. If any water has collected owing to
condensation, weather etc. this must be wiped
dry and the surface cleaned.
15.2

15.2.4 External input and output shaft

extensions should be protected by application of
suitable hard setting rust preventative and then
wrapped with moisture-proof tape or similar
material.

INSIDE STORAGE

15.2.5 Place a suitable amount of silica gel

bags inside the coupling box to absorb moisture.

15.2.1 Place the fluid coupling on suitably

ventilated wooden skid to raise it above floor
level and allow free air circulation.

15.2.6 The fluid coupling should be inspected

inside and out at least every 6 months. Any
surface rectification required should be carried
out immediately. The coupling should be

15.2.2 The good should be stored in warm, dry,

vibration-free ware house, ideal conditions would
33

inspected for sings of rusting and / or moisture

collecting owing to humidity. The input and
output shafts of the couplings should also be
rotated a few revolutions at this time.
15.3 OUTSIDE STORAGE
Outside storage of PEMBRIL fluid coupling is not
recommended, but if absolutely necessary, the
following procedure should be adhered to:
15.3.1 Follow all steps given below.
15.3.2 Coat all external bright steel parts with
suitable hard setting rust preventative. 16.3.3
Close all openings weather-tight with wooden
covers.
15.3.4 Cover complete fluid coupling with canvas
or plastic sheeting Encapsulate.
15.3.5 With side walls and lid lines with
commercial tarred paper or back hessian treated
commercial polythene, build up packing case
around coupling. The lid should be screwed or
bolted down to aid removal for periodic
inspection.
15.3.6 Cases should be opened every 6 months
and equipment checked for any signs of rusting
and/ or moisture collection owing to humidity.
15.4

AFTER STORAGE

Following long term storage, we recommended

that the first stage of commissioning consists of
trial run for at least two hours.
15.5

RESPONSIBILITY

These recommendations are intended to serve as

a minimum guide only and will not supplant
common sense on behalf of owner for additional
safeguards to ensure safe storage where special
precautions are warranted.
Responsibility for the equipment during storage
must be assumed by the owner.
PREMIUM ENERGY TRANSMISSION LTD. will not
be responsible for any damage to equipment
during storage.
