Reflection Paper: The Island

The movie entitled The Island is one of the best action movies I watched in my life,
not only because of the high quality effects and advanced technologies but also the
content of the movie itself. From the very start, it made me think the ideas or opinions
about the topics such as cloning, technology and scientific advances, particularly in issue
of reproductive and genetic interventions, and the regenerative medicine. The film
questions what is ethically correct in our highly advancing world occupied with rich
individuals hungry for power and immortal state.
In the movie, I observed that those clones were confined in closely regulated
environment filled with their fellow clones, who are dreaming of winning the lottery
someday to experience going to an island. I noticed that there is a domination and
control over individuals, by means of manipulation, which prevents the inhabitants to
decide freely and voluntarily. This situation is somehow the same with the situation we
are experiencing now, especially on government related problems. The difference is, we
are not clones, and we are real.
As the story of the movie goes on, Lincoln Six Echo demonstrated an unusual level
of curiosity, and for me, it is a good characteristic of him, he decided for himself. In the
movie, he was able to catch a butterfly, and that butterfly led him at the various points
to enter the restricted area. Eventually, his curiosity led him to explore further, until he
got into the hospital and saw the real things that will happen to the clones who will win

the lottery. While Lincoln was hiding at the hospital, he saw how the mother was tortured
and killed so that they can give the baby of the dead mother to the adopting parents. For
me, that event is so immoral and unethical. The thing is, you dont need to kill to ruin
someone elses life.
Lincoln, together with Jordan faced everything just to fight for their right to live.
They went outside the closed area and conquered the outside. They even had struggle
dealing with other people since they dont have enough knowledge to understand those.
Meanwhile, the head of clone reproductions, hired a spy or maybe a killer to find Lincoln
and Jordan. But in the end, that spy was the one who helped Lincoln and Jordan to fight
their rights. He played a heroic role because of helping and saving those 2 clones. Maybe
he realized that it is not right to just listen and listen to the higher leader especially when
morality and ethics is included in his job.
