Everything you do for this class affects your grade either directly or indirectly. To achieve a grade of A,
students must complete all assignments and exceed the minimum standards for each assignment, both
major and minor. Incomplete performance will lower your grade on a percentage basis.
Teachers will calculate the grades for each of the following components to determine a
numerical grade:

20% Final Grade: Milestones EOC

80% Final Grade

15% Assessments During Learning (i.e. guided, independent, or group practice (Classwork and
Homework))

35% Assessments for Learning (Projects and Quizzes), term and research papers

50% Assessment of Learning: (Tests, Final Exams, Culminating Exams, Final Drafts, Performances20%

89-80%=B
79-70%=C

Expectations
Citizenship in this class calls for the highest possible standards of civility and respect: for self, others,
property, and the learning process. All school and district rules and policies will be consistently upheld.
Tardiness: Please refer to the Rutland High School tardy policy regarding tardiness. I will consistently
uphold this policy.
Academic Honesty Policy: Trust is essential in a learning community and needs to be protected.
Students cheating in any way will receive a zero on that particular assignment and a disciplinary referral
for a second instance.

Students and parents may sign up for text message reminders by texting @nin2016 to (478) 8453936.

Student assessment will focus on analysis and synthesis of texts. Many assessments will be
written.

Discussion, observation, conferences, quizzes, and projects will play a lesser role in determining the
students final grade in the course.

Extensions on assignments are not given, unless the student has an excused absence on that
date. Students are expected to turn in all assignments on designated dates. Students should
make every effort to submit all work on time, even if they are ill or not on campus the day the
assignment is due. Without an excused absence, late work is not accepted. Even with an
excused absence on the due date, long-term assignments (over a week) are penalized when not
turned in on time.

Students are expected to read outside of class, and annotate as they read. This is best
accomplished by purchasing your own texts. Texts will be announced no less than 4 weeks in
advance.

A Gmail account is highly recommended for this course. It should have the students first and last
name. This will make access to Google Drive seamless.

If students miss school due to illness, it is the responsibility of the students to determine what they
have missed and to complete all missing assignments within one week for full credit. I recommend

going to the class website (khdz9lit.weebly.com)

Students must make up missed work within five days. At the teachers discretion late work
may not be accepted, but in order to encourage meeting deadlines there is always a: late charge of
ten percent per day deduction in points. No matter what, it is impossible to get an A on a late
assignment.

Always speak to me about turning in late work before you start. All late work (even if excused) will be
recorded as late for grading purposes in order to help the teacher, student, and parent monitor the
quality and pattern of late work.

Students that bring an excuse have 5 days to make up missed work. More than 10 unexcused
absences will result in no credit being received for the course.
I am available for tutoring by appointment. Students are required to complete a Tutorial Request
Form prior to requesting a date. It is the students responsibility to make the appointment for
tutoring and make arrangements for transportation.
The course syllabus is a general plan for the course; all information contained in the course
syllabus/calendar is subject to change. Any changes will be announced in class and a revised syllabus
distributed to students to be shared with their parents/guardians.
