Course Description
Geometry is a one year course designed to develop problem-solving skills using inductive and
deductive reasoning. Using two and three-dimensional geometric shapes, students are guided
through the conceptual and working levels of processes that examines their properties,
measurements, and mutual relations in space. Students will study skill sets from various algebraic,
spatial, and discrete mathematics. Geometric proofs are used as a vehicle to systematically develop
problem solving skills by relating geometric shapes. This course is aligned with the Geometry
Common Core State Standards and Standards for Mathematical Practice .

Course Goals and Major Objectives

During high school, students begin to formalize their geometry experiences from elementary and
middle school, using more precise definitions and developing careful proofs. The goal of this course
is to prepare mathematically proficient students and aid their transition to higher-level math courses
with an increased ability to apply algebra to the solution of problems involving measurement,
physical relationships, and logical proof. Specifically, the course content will include a rigorous
approach to: (1) Congruency; (2) Similarity, Right Triangles, and Trigonometry; (3) Circles;
(4) Expressing Geometric Properties with Equations; (5) Geometric Measurement and
Dimension; and (6) Modeling with Geometry. Students will also continue to develop proficiency
with the Standards for Mathematical Practice: make sense of problems and persevere in solving
them; reason abstractly and quantitatively, construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of
others; model with mathematics; use appropriate tools strategically; attend to precision; look for and
make use of structure; and look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Recommended Materials

Pencils (We all make mistakes. However, we can erase the ones we make in pencil.)
3-ring binder with loose leaf paper
Folder
Glue Stick
Scientific Calculator

Classroom Expectations: All West Iron County School District policies apply in this classroom.
1.
2.
3.

Be PREPARED. (Be on time with all necessary materials.)

Be RESPECTFUL. (Treat all people and property with respect and act appropriately.)
Be RESPONSIBLE. (Actively participate, complete & turn in assignments, and seek help when
needed.)
4. Expect a challenge. (Do your best and take pride in your work.)

Attendance Policy
Consistent attendance is extremely important. Mathematical concepts build upon previous
material. Thus, it is essential that students attend class consistently and keep up with all
notes/assignments. However, if you are absent from class, it is YOUR responsibility to obtain the
assignment and turn in any make-up work for grading. You will be given a reasonable amount of time
to make up work; however, please work diligently to complete make-up assignments within a
reasonable time frame and prior to testing. If you miss a test or quiz, arrangements to make it up
should be made the day you return to school or prior to any sporting/school organized event .
Additionally, arrive to class on time. The school tardy policy will be enforced. Disciplinary
consequences will be imposed for each tardy as described in the student code of conduct.

Grading Policy:

The standard grading scale that is provided in the student handbook will be used. Your final semester
grade will be determined by each marking period counting as 40% and your final exam 20%.
Formative Grades:
Assignments: Assignments include all class work, assigned problems, practice quizzes, journals,
online work, homework, and projects. Assignments are graded for completeness and effort.
Students must attempt all assigned problems and SHOW WORK to earn full credit. Please label all
assignments in the top right corner with your name, section number/page number, and
assignments problems. Time will be given in class for questions and review of assignments in
order to provide students with the opportunity to correct their work.
Classroom Participation: Students are expected to actively participate in the learning
environment. Each student will be responsible for taking notes or completing sample problems
and keeping them in an organized fashion in a Geometry binder. Participation in group
discussions and collaboration with peers during learning projects is required. Students are also
expected to utilize resources on the online classroom extension available through my website at
http://mrsfales.weebly.com/.
Summative Grades:
Quizzes/Quick Checks: Quizzes/mini-assessments are given throughout the chapters to check
for retention and understanding of previously covered material as well as to reinforce assignment
completion. Quizzes can only be retaken if the student has completed ALL of the assignments for
the sections covered on the quiz.
Tests/Projects: Pre- and Post- tests will be given for each unit/chapter to assess and
demonstrate student mastery of content. Students are expected to prepare diligently for each
test. However, students will be able to retake a test that did not earn a passing score. Students
will be expected to complete all original test corrections and additional practice preparations
prior to the retake. Please note that retakes will not be given during regular class time.
Midterm/Final Exam: At the end of each semester, a comprehensive exam will be given and
may include any/all content and concepts covered throughout the entire semester. The final
exam will count for 20% of the overall semester grade. All students are expected to complete the
final exam during the scheduled finals week. If the exam is not taken, it could result in a 0%
grade for this assessment. Alternate applicable handbook policies will be considered on an
individual basis.

COMMUNICATION IS KEY
Geometry can be challenging. If you are having difficulties in any way, you must talk to me. DO
NOT wait to ask for help. The longer you wait the more difficult this class may become. I will be
available for help during work time in class and most days before and after school as well as during
CES. I am here to help you!
This year we will be utilizing an online extension to our classroom. You are expected to join and
use the resources available through my website at http://mrsfales.weebly.com/.
General lesson plans are posted for reference as well as various online tools and resources. As the
school year evolves so will the website!
