ABSTRACT

THE CORRELATION of PERSONAL HYGIENE with PREVALENCE of


SOIL TRANSMITTED HELMINTHES INFECTION at SDN 31 PASIR
KANDANG KECAMATAN KOTO TANGAH KOTA PADANG

Prevalence of Soil Transmitted Helminthes (STH) infection among primary
school students in Indonesia is still high. This is because awareness in keeping
hygiene is still low. This study was aimed to assess the correlation of personal
hygiene with prevalence of Soil Transmitted Helminthes infection at SDN 03 Pasir
kandang.
This was an analytical observational study with cross sectional design. The
subject of this study is student of SDN 03 Pasir Kandang and ninety two students of
them have fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The hygiene status were interviewed by
questionnaire and showed by using eosin method for detecting worm eggs. Data were
processed with SPSS 15,0 for Windows using Chi-Square test.
Results of this study showed that knowledge of children (47.31%) and the
attitude of children (50.54%) is not good, sanitary home environment (38.70%) is not
fullfilled, personal hygiene is not good dintaranya actions of footwear (10, 75%), the
act of handwashing (24.73%), cleanliness of nails (30.11%), and school
environmental sanitation in the observation is not fullfilled. Based on statistical tests,
behavioral relationships hygiene with worm infection in each variable is the students
'knowledge of worm infection (p = 0.267), students' attitudes about worm infection (p
= 0.513), environmental sanitation (p = 1.000), measures the use of mats foot (p =
0.282), handwashing (p = 1.000), the cleanliness of nails (p = 0.606), and school
environmental sanitation is not obtained statistical data.
In conclusion, there is not a significant correlation of personal hygiene with
prevalence of Soil Transmitted Helminthes infection at SDN 03 Pasir Kandang.
