Assignment B

Assignment C

Assignment A
Answer all questions.

Marks 10

Q1. Find three numbers in A.P. such that their sum is 27 and the sum of their
squares is 341.
2

A1. Given the 3 numbers in A.P,

a, a+d, a+2d
Therefore,
a+a+d+a+2d = 27
a + (a+d) + (a+2d) = 341

(1)
(2)

From the first equation we get,

a+a+d+a+2d = 27
3a + 3d = 27
3(a+d) = 27
(a+d) = 273
a+d = 9
From the 2nd equation,
a + (a+d) + (a+2d) = 341
Solving the identity a + b + 2ab
a + 9 + 9 +18d + d = 341
a +18d + 162 + d = 341
a + 18d + d = 341 162
a +18d + d =179
Given that,
a+d = 9
Therefore, a = 9-d
Substituting
(9-d) + 18d + d =179
Solving the identity a - 2ab + b
81 - 18d + d +18d + d =179
2d = 98
d = 982
d=7
To find the value of a,
a+d=9
a +7 = 9
3

a=97
a=2
Verification :
2 , 9 , a + 2d
(2) + 2 (7)
2 + 14 = 16
2 , 9 ,16..
2 + 9 +16 = 27
Q2. A firm invests Rs.10, 000 in a business which has a net return of Rs.500 per
year. An investment of Rs.20, 000 would yield a net return of Rs.2000 per year.
What is the linear relationship between investment and net return? What would
be the annual return on an investment of Rs.12, 000?
A2.
Q3. The ratio of income of two persons is 9:7 and the ratio of their expenditures
is 4:3.If each of them manages to save Rs 2000 per month, find their monthly
incomes.
A3. Let us denote the incomes of the two person by Rs 9x and Rs 7x and their
expenditures by Rs 4y and Rs 3y respectively. Then the equations formed in the
situation is given by:
9x 4y = 2000
(1)
and 7x 3y = 2000
(2)
Multiply Equation (1) by 3 and Equation (2) by 4 to make the coefficients of
y equal. Then we get the equations:
27x 12y = 6000
(3)
28x 12y = 8000
(4)
Subtract Equation (3) from Equation (4) to eliminate y, because the coefficients
of y are the same. So, we get
(28x 27x) (12y 12y) = 8000 6000
i.e., x = 2000
Substituting this value of x in (1), we get
9(2000) 4y = 2000
i.e., y = 4000
So, the solution of the equations is x = 2000, y = 4000. Therefore, the monthly incomes
of the persons are Rs 18,000 and Rs 14,000, respectively.
4

Verification:
18000 : 14000 = 9 : 7.
Also, the ratio of their expenditures =
18000 2000 : 14000 2000 = 16000 : 12000 = 4 : 3
Q4. Discuss about Logarithmic form of xa = n and Prove that

Q4. An automobile company uses three types of steel S1 , S2 and S3 .For

producing three types of cars C1, C2 , C3. Steel Requirements (in tons) for each
type of car are given below:

S2

S3

Determine the number of cars of each type which can be produced using 29, 13
and 16 tons of steel of three types respectively.
A4. Let x1 , x2 , x3 be the number of cars of the types C1 ,C2,C3 respectively which can
be produced .The system of three linear equations is :
2x1 + 3x2 + 4x3 = 29
x1 + x2 +2x3 =13
3x1 + 2x2 + x3 =16
These equations can also be represented in matrix form as shown below :
2 3 4 1
