TheanalysisoftheOttocycleisverysimilartothatoftheDieselcyclewhichweanalysedinthe
previoussection.Wewillusetheideal"airstandard"assumptioninouranalysis.Thustheworkingfluid

processesareideal,combustionisreplacedbyheatadditiontotheair,andexhaustisreplacedbyaheat
rejectionprocesswhichrestorestheairtotheinitialstate.
ThemostsignificantdifferencebetweentheidealOttocycleandtheidealDieselcycleisthemethodof
ignitingthefuelairmixture.RecallthatintheidealDieselcycletheextremelyhighcompressionratio
(around18:1)allowstheairtoreachtheignitiontemperatureofthefuel.Thefuelistheninjectedsuch
thattheignitionprocessoccursataconstantpressure.IntheidealOttocyclethefuelairmixtureis
introducedduringtheinductionstrokeandcompressedtoamuchlowercompressionratio(around8:1)
andisthenignitedbyaspark.Thecombustionresultsinasuddenjumpinpressurewhilethevolume
remainsessentiallyconstant.Thecontinuationofthecycleincludingtheexpansionandexhaustprocesses
areessentiallyidenticaltothatoftheidealDieselcycle.Wefinditconvenienttodeveloptheanalysis
