Naphthenic Process Oils

CALSOL Process Oils are refined from a select blend of napthenic crude base stocks using a state-of-the-art,
multistage hydrogenation process. The HYDROCAL Process offers the unique ability to produce naphthenic process
oils that meet currently established performance standards for a variety of applications. Careful selection and blending
of naphthenic crudes, step-by-step computer controlled refining and the latest ultra-high pressure catalytic processes
develop unexcelled product performance. The quality control practices that Calumet brings to bear on crude oil
selection and subsequent refining processes assure consistent uniformity and product performance.

Key CALSOL Naphthenic Process Oil Characteristics:

Compatibility with synthetic elastomers and their additives.

A wide range of chemstries provide a choice process oil to meet formulation needs.

CALSOL 8 SERIES

CALSOL 5 SERIES

CALSOL 8 Series 0iIs exhibit the same high VGC levels

and low aniline points that the rubber industry considers
to be optimum. They have been refined to a very low
level of polar compounds at a high clay gel aromatics
level as measured by ASTM Method D-2007. This
provides excellent color stability without sacrificing
elastomer compatibility and processing characteristics.

When the highest levels of color stability, oxidation and

aging resistance are required, the CALSOL 5 Oils are a
logical choice.

High VGC Process Oils

The typically low aniline points, high VGC levels and

carbon type analysis of the CALSOL Oils, have been
aligned to current industry standards in order to assure
optimum compatibility and performance in current
elastomeric rubber applications. Note that CALSOL 8
Oils, ranging in viscosity from 40 to 2,400 SUS/100F
(3 to 450 cSt/40C), exhibit the balance of properties
that make them the preferred choice for non-rubber
applications. For example: Resin extending, PVC,
textiles, caulking compounds and other applications.

Nonstaining Naphthenic Oils

CALSOL 5 Series Process Oils are light-colored,

nonstaining naphthenic oils. They combine excellent
initial color and color stability with intermediate levels
of aromatic and naphthenic molecular structures.
This combination provides good compatibility with
unsaturated synthetic polymers at the oil loadings
used in critical color applications. The higher levels of
refining applied here provide better resistance to aging
and color degradation as evidenced by the very low
levels of polar compounds, measured by ASTM D-2007
and the very low values for UV absorptivity measured
by ASTM D-2008. The oil components that absorb
ultraviolet light at 260 nm are aromatic compounds that
have been shown to contribute significantly to color
shifts, oxidation, failure on aging and UV instability
when exposed to light. In addition, the naphthenic
character of the CALSOL 5 Series Oils makes them an
ideal choice whenever the balance of hardness and
color stability is critical. For example: thermoplastics,
radial and styrene block elastomers.

OSHA Hazardous Communication Status
All CALSOL Oils are treated by the HYDROCAL ultra-high pressure catalytic hydrogenation process and do not
require labeling as carcinogenic under the OSHA Hazard Communication Standards.
FDA Status
There are specific FDA regulations for oils used in many applications. These regulations specify the purity of the oil
required by CFR 178.3620.
CALSOL 806, 810, 815, 5550, 5160S Oils and CALIGHT RPO Oil meet the requirements of CFR 178.3620 (c).
This regulation refers to a component of a non-food article in the products listed below.
175.105 Adhesives
176.210 Defoaming agents for paper and
paperboard
177.200 Defoaming agents used in coatings
