Methodology of Quantitative Research (1st Journal)

Biology Department had changed a lot. It was my first
impression when I look around the building. Every corner had
been used effectively. When you step into lobby you should
notice a desk, and it actually long enough about 3 meter, thats
should be use for receptionist. Now look at the wall, it material
from brick, but after that some artistic retouch by wooden panel
had applied. In my subjective opinion Biology Department
emitted warm and classy aura, which is nice. And what was my
opinion about toilet? Here, women and men toilets separated
each other, it clean, but not so fresh (a scent of ammoniac, you
know what I mean), soap? Better you bring ones, it made me
happy if I found hanger to hang my clothes just in case I would
take off mine; overall it had 8/10 point.
Let`s move to our room, so every room in Biology
Department had a unique code. That day we had our class held
in Bio 110, it was my first time to enter those room. Long time
ago, Bio 110 just like plain room and could handle big class with
many students. Then, that big room was separated in two parts,
not equal each other. Bio 110 could represent warm and homey
room, in my opinion. It had dominated by brown and cream color,
and not so bright lamp, it smoothen up my mood. Here it was
the position of our class in that day.

Exploring Concept :
Study on methodology of qualitative research hopefully could
draw out our full potential to design research project. Methodology of
Quantitative Research is concentrating itself in limited object. In our
case, we ought to learn every step which is important to finalize our
thesis. The bold lines or should I say the essential part of this subject
contain of: (1) pick and choose problem that caught your attention, (2)
study literature, (3) hypothesis, (4) variable listing, (5) research design,
(6) how to make budget list for research, (7) statistical study about
research, (8) write a proposal research. It has to be done by exploring
literature, the up-to-date ones.
Question :

How to understand the meaning of research?

How do I know anything I have done, which I believe a research,

actually is a research? Any way to confirm it?

When I browse on some international online community, many
sentences include word research for example could you share
what is the title of the book? For research purpose. I want to know,
is there any synonym for research? Are they considering research is

some activity related on book?

Is there any relation about research and scientific approach?
How do I know, student in my country has same perception about
research?

Identification of Problem :
I believe there are some kind of different perception about
research, which many people did not aware about. I had browse with
the keyword definition of research, then I found many interesting
fact about misconception of research. Some people believe that

research actually a mere simple activity, re-searching about some

information from book, internet, etc. Everyone should do it without
struggle, after you got your information, voila! It`s done! You could
share your result with the world. Congratulation! But, is it the true way
of doing research? No! It`s a misconception, just like I said before.
Research require high order thinking skill, you need to know about the
real problem, after that you should find your way to resolve that
problem then you could lead society around you to find the truth. It
is indeed a long way to go, but it is worthy to know that you will
provide some good deeds to society.
Self-reflection :
On our first meeting, my friends and I had a task to fill
questionnaire from our lecturer. It is consist of name, address, phone
number, etc. After we fill that form, we have to introduce our self. I
clearly still remembered which one of my friend and where they sit
(their position) in class. In clock-wise, start from our lecturer in front of
class, Mrs. Betty, Mrs. Hera, Sigma, Binti, Rahma, Nura, Dian, Randa,
Najib, Aji, Gigin, Mufida, Zulaikha, Malika, Aslih, Ariek, Lita, Farah,
Gilang, then me.
Some of my friend convey to our class about their wish in the
future. No, not that kind of future, I mean the future class. Some of my
friend tell about their passion, their eminency, which part of skill they
really do good, they are absolutely smart people. I am proud of them.
But in the same time, I convince my self to reach them, and stand in
the same stage with them.
After self-introduction, then our class study about the framework
of our course. I got many information, some of them are new to me. Its
about virtue, Mrs. Hera said that cheating is a big no! cheating means,
you deceive yourself cheating means you deceive other people and
the worst of all, cheating means you deceive God. How could you
deceive God? Actually I rather choose not to approve the last quote,
but then our lecturer say that you deceive yourself in front of God after
He gave you talent. You waste your talent, given by God. It`s a
disappoint.

Then we move to the next session, we flip a coin. I mean, it is

Malika, our representative who toss and flip that coin. She do it twice,
first to choose which method we should bring up in the future (it is
Problem Based Learning) and the second we choose which one better
to do, mind-mapping or concept-mapping my friend, Binti, give a
short information about the difference between them. That toss-andflip coin action make a big uproar in the class. I have a good memory
about my first day in college. Thanks a lot, my gratitude for Mrs. Hera
and Mrs. Betty, and for my friends.
After that big uproar, our lecturer said about task. How should I
put it, it is not a big deal to have that many task to do, but in the other
hand you should break your limit to manage your self and not loss
composure. This is the list of our task, (1) daily journal, (2) analyze
10`s articles, (3) concept-mapping, (4) thesis proposal, and (5)
portfolio. When the time comes, we have to bundle that task, then it
become portfolio. Oh yeah, we need to write our self-reflection too.
Interesting isn`t it? Wish me luck.
Future Plan :
I`d rather choose not to blabbering about future plan, firstly I
become afraid being absorb in thuulul amal or in Indonesia it
translated panjang angan I will explain in the next chapter of daily
journal. Secondly , I believe my future plan is my privacy, not a public
consumption. But then again, my lecturer provoke me to bring this up,
so I choose to search some information first. After I read more about
the urgency to write future plan, I found some reasoning, some
enlightenment.
My future plan about how I survive in the college and climb to
the top, sound great isn`t it?, actually simple enough.
1. I want to make a friend, across generation, the more the merrier it
become. I want to have a nice and sweet memory about this.
2. I need to finish my thesis proposal before 1 st semester end. And
recently, I have been attracted to molecular Biology.
3. I want to get an A in every subject. So, no time for being lethargic.
4. I need to upgrade my social skill, writing skill, and leadership skill,
in the same time.

I want to be a great leader, but humble, I want to serve my country

in a good way.
5. I want to be more religious, never forgot to pray to God, making my
self become a role-model for my siblings. So I need to show them
the right path.
