Message from the Italian Consul for South Australia
The Consulate of Italy is proud to be a part of the film festival “Sicily in the
Spotlight”, promoted by the Sicilian Region in collaboration with the Sicilia
Club of Adelaide (28 July – 1 August 2008).
The event constitutes a precious occasion to step into one of the most
fascinating places in Italy and in the world, through the images of five
young directors.
The opening night film, “Salvatore: questa è la vita” by Gian Paolo Cugno,
portrays the theme of the discovery of the intriguing lifestyle of a small,
traditional Sicilian village, by a “northern” Italian teacher.
Cinema is art, communication, form of expression: it is an important vehicle
to express traditions, values, culture, history.
My wish is that this event may attract the new generations to the Italian
cultural heritage, particularly – but not exclusively – for those of Italian
origin.
I would thus like to convey all my appreciation to the Sicilian Region and to
the Sicilia Club of Adelaide, that has gone so far as to buy a new sound
system for the event.

Ringrazio la società INTEXA che ha curato il progetto, i rapporti con la
Regione Sicilia e le case di distribuzione.
Ringrazio la Regione Sicilia nella persona dell’On. Dott. Santi Formica
Assessore Regionale del Lavoro, della Previdenza Sociale, della Formazione
Professionale e della Emigrazione che ha creduto in questo progetto e lo ha

ME, THE OTHER

Plot Line: This is the story of two friends, Giuseppe and Yousef. They
experience directly and are also victims of the so called war of civilizations. In
the middle of the sea, far from land, they fall victim to a suspicion that comes
from terra firma that has been devastated by war. Yousef and Giuseppe are
friends from way back and have worked together for more than ten years.
When Yousef arrived as a refugee from Tunisia he began working on a fishing
boat and there he met the person that would become his best friend,
Giuseppe. After many years of sweat and blood under the “Boss” the two
friends decide to go out on their own by buying a small used fishing boat that
they rename “Medea”. The name is displayed on the freshly painted sides of
the vessel in western and Arabic lettering. After the dramatic events of 9/11
the world seems to have changed completely. Every aspect of life is invaded by
this state of this permanent, asymmetrical war that manages to cast its doubts
out wide. The film begins with the two friends who, instead of harvesting the
fruits of their sacrifices, have to handle the economic and practical extorsions
of the ex “Boss”, Troina, who runs the fish market. A small time mafia boss who
not only sets the price for the catch, but also manipulates good and bad
feelings towards those who do not submit to his “rules”. Whereas Yousef,
because of his greater experience of life, is not put out by the Troina’s
attempts at extorsion, Giuseppe, who is of much simpler character, gets more
and more upset. The world is shocked by the latest terrorist attack in Spain
where hundreds die when a train is bombed, but for Yousef and Giuseppe life
goes on. They find themselves out fishing in the middle of the sea when the
radio announces that Yousef is the terrorist hunted by Interpol. A tragic case of
mistaken identity caused by identical names which will overcome the two
protagonists, thus destroying their lives.

Trama: È la storia di due amici Giuseppe e Yousef. I due - vittime collaterali -
vivono sulla loro pelle la cosidetta guerra di civiltà. Lontani dalla terra, in mezzo
al mare, si abbatte su di loro un sospetto che viene dalla terra ferma devastata
dalla guerra. Yousef e Giuseppe sono amici di lunga data. Lavorano insieme da
più di dieci anni. Quando Yousef arrivò esule dalla Tunisia iniziò a lavorare su
un peschereccio, è lì che conobbe quello che sarebbe diventato il suo miglior
amico: Giuseppe.Dopo molti anni di sangue e sudore trascorsi sotto “Padrone”
i due amici decidono di mettersi in proprio acquistando un piccolo
peschereccio usato che ribattezzano Medea. Sulle fiancate dell’imbarcazione
riverniciata di fresco campeggia il nome, sia in caratteri occidentali che arabi.
Dopo l’undici settembre, il mondo sembra essere cambiato in tutto. Ogni
dimensione della vita è invasa da questa condizione di guerra asimmetrica e
permanente capace di gettare i suoi sospetti ovunque. Il film parte con i due
amici che invece di raccogliere i frutti del loro sacrificio, sono alle prese con le
ritorsioni economiche e pratiche, dell’ex “Padrone”, che gestisce il mercato del
pesce. Troina mafiosotto locale oltre a stabilire il prezzo del pescato, smuove
simpatie e antipatie nei confronti di chi non si sottomette alle sue “regole”.
Mentre Yousef, grazie alle mille esperienze di vita, non ne fa un dramma delle
ritorsioni di Troina, Giuseppe, che è persona semplice, si sta facendo il sangue
amaro. Il mondo è sconvolto dall’ennesimo attentato terroristico, in Spagna un
treno è saltato in aria uccidendo centinaia di persone, ma per Yousef e
Giuseppe la vita deve andare avanti. Si trovano per una battuta di pesca in
mezzo al mare quando la radio annuncia che Yousef è il terrorista ricercato
dalla Polizia internazionale. Un tragico caso di omonimia che travolgerà
distruggendole le vite dei due protagonisti.

It is with real pleasure that I celebrate the arrival of the “Sicily on Show”
Film Festival that was conceived and passionately desired by Paolo Puglia
who is also our General Coordinator and Artistic Director.
I wish to thank INTEXA which looked after the Project and for its liaison
with the Sicilian Regional Government and the film distributors.
I also wish to thank the Sicilian Regional Government through the person of
the Honourable Santi Formica, the government’s Minister for Work, Social
Welfare, Professional Development and Migration who believed in the
Project and funded it.
I would also like to thank Dr. Tommaso Coniglio, the Consul for Italy in
Adelaide for his enthusiasm for the promotion of Italian culture that he has
again shown on this occasion.
I welcome the delegation from the Sicilia Region that honours us with its
presence.
Last, but not least, I wish to thank all those that have, by whatever means,
contributed to the success of “SICILY ON SHOW”. That is, the Volunteers,
the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Adelaide, the local Companies and the
members and Committee of the Sicilia Club.
I fervently hope that this will be the first of many such festivals and that is
also only the beginning of a long and abiding collaboration with “our”

Il cinema da sempre si e’ avvalso della Sicilia. Tanti sono i film girati su di
essa: dalla storia ai costumi, dalla cronaca ai suoi misteri dai luoghi ai
personaggi.
Il cinema e’ immaginazione. La Sicilia e’ immaginazione.
Leonardo Sciascia diceva:
“L'intera Sicilia è una dimensione fantastica. Come si fa a viverci senza
immaginazione?”
Da appassionato di cinema sono onorato di dirigere e coordinare una
rassegna cinematografica dedicata alla mia Terra.
Non e’ stato facile scegliere quattro film per questa rassegna, visto che
nella produzione nazionale tanti sono i film che in qualche maniera hanno a
che fare con la Sicilia.
La Sicilia in Rassegna
si e’ potuta realizzare grazie all’On. Santi Formica Assessore Regionale al
Lavoro, alla Previdenza Sociale, alla Formazione Professionale e alla
Emigrazione, , al Sicilia Club di Adelaide e alla Società INTEXA.
Un sentito ringraziamento va agli sponsors e a tutti coloro che in qualche
modo hanno collaborato alla riuscita di questa rassegna.
Questa prima edizione di “LA SICILIA IN RASSEGNA” parte da Adealide e

Plot Line: Thirty year old Giovanni is Sicilian by birth, but is now also
Milanese by adoption as he was forced to migrate there in search of work.
Even here however, he has never lost the inimitable characteristics of his
native Sicily, so, when he loses his job he decides to return to his home city
of Catania. In this city he finds nothing except to go into “partnership” with
Filippo, his old friend from University and, by less than orthodox means,
becomes a matchmaker. He puts together false identities for the aspiring
spouses making them up perfectly for every occasion, such as when a
farmer becomes a poet and a lawyer who, despite his allergy to dogs,
becomes a vet. In Sicily Giovanni finds himself involved in the goings on, in
the mix-ups and the characteristic comings and goings of the land and the
people who populate it and so he finds no few difficulties readjusting
himself until he meets Aurora, the thirty year old lady from the North who
will once more upset his life.

Trama: Giovanni è un trentenne siciliano di nascita, ma ormai milanese
d'adozione, è infatti stato costretto a migrare a Milano per motivi di lavoro.
Anche qui però Giovanni, che non ha mai perso le peculiarità caratteriali
della sua Sicilia, perde il suo impiego e decide così di tornare nella sua città
natale: Catania. Qui non trova altra alternativa se non quella di mettersi "in
società" con il suo vecchio amico e compagno di università Filippo e, con
metodi poco ortodossi, fare l'agente matrimoniale. Costruisce false identità
agli aspiranti sposi rendendoli perfetti per ogni richiesta, come accade ad
un agricoltore che diventa poeta e ad un avvocato che, nonostante la fobia
per i cani, diventa veterinario.
In Sicilia Giovanni si ritrova invischiato nelle dinamiche, negli intrecci, nelle
situazioni tipiche della sua terra e di chi la popola, trovando non poche
difficoltà a riadattarsi, fin quando non incontra Aurora. La ragazza è una
trentenne del nord, la quale gli sconvolgerà nuovamente la vita.

Cinema has always valued Sicily.Many films have been made there, from
historical dramas to period pieces, from films bout current events and her
mysteries to places and her people
Cinema is Imagination. Sicily is Imagination.
Leonardo Sciascia said:
“All of Sicily is a dimension of Fantasy. How can you live there without
Imagination?”
As a passionate fan of movies I feel honoured to direct and coordinate a
cinematographic event dedicated to my Home Land.
It was not easy choosing four films for this event especially considering that
in Italy’s annual film production many are films involving Sicily in one form
or another.
Sicily on show
was made possible thanks to the Honourable Santi Formica the Sicilian
Regional Government’s Minister of Work, Social Welfare, Professional
Development and Migration, Adelaide’s Sicilia Club and INTEXA.

This edition of “Sicily on show” is being held in Adelaide and who knows
that future editions may also take place in other Australian cities.

Plot Line: We are in the early 1980s and for Saro Scordia Cosa Nostra is a great
thing, worthy of respect. Gaetano Butera ,a Mafioso of some standing begins
keeping an eye on this poor barefoot young boy who is also bright, intelligent
and brave and explains to him that if he knows how to prove himself he will
have a future among the men of honour. So begin Saro’s first steps in a
criminal life. The first robberies and extorsions go to his head and make Saro
believe he is different from common men, a wolf amongst sheep with money,
women and respect, all things a poor lad like he had never had. But Ada, who
Saro has loved since a childhood is also part of his life. Ada is his same age, but
already seems a woman, sharing passions in suburban hotels, but she does not
want him as a husband as she does not want a mafioso’s life. And this drive
him crazy… He tries to leave her, to refuse her, to stop thinking about her. He
even marries another woman, but he cannot forget her. In the meantime his
career advances. He is asked to murder a drug trafficker in Milan who had
offended the gang and his reward will be official membership to Cosa Nostra.
However, the murder is not the act of bravery that Scordia had imagined, but
only a clumsy, dirty, brutal inhuman act of cruelty. As he witnesses that poor
man’s death Saro loses his conviction. That bumbling death without dignity
that he had committed at the order’s of other men on a victim he did not even
know is the beginning of the breakdown of his beliefs…

Trama: Un giovane insegnante romano, Marco Brioni, accetta l'incarico

Plot Line: Marco Brioni, a young roman teacher, agrees to take on a year
