HISTORICAL
A SKETCH of the origin and subse-

quent development of the greatest

billiard table company in the world, would
excellently serve as a biographical family
history of John M. Brunswick, Julius
Balke, H. W. Collender, M. Bensinger
and A. F. Troescher.
The Brunswick-Balke-Collender Co._

The Brunswick-Balke-Collender Co.

HISTORICAL CONTINUED
is at present, as it always has been, distinctively a family concern. Every dollar
in the company is owned by the families
of the original founders.
B. E Bensinger, grandson of John
M. Brunswick, is now president. He is
of the third generation in the Brunswick
family, prominently connected with the
world famous old house of The Brunswick-Balke-Collender Co. ; B. H. Brunswick,
First Vice-President; A. A. Troescher,
Treasurer; are all descended from the
original founders. They have devoted
their lives, as did their fathers before
them, to the manufacture of billiard and
pool tables. The slightest deterioration
in quality would be considered by them
as equivalent to a blemish on the family
name.
By reason of the fact that every dollar
in the company is owned by members of
the family, there is only one interest. The
officers are not compelled to sacrifice quality for profits to satisfy a horde of hungry
stockholders. That is why their tables are
the best in the world, as they have been
for the past sixty years.

HOW TO ORDER GOODS.

FOR SIXTY YEARS

Along this line we might say a great
many things about ourselves, but whenever we have an inclination to talk about
our unsurpassed facilities, we are reminded
of the fabled game cock, who rounded up
and cleared the barnyard of his rivals,
and then crowed so loudly over his conquest that he attracted the attention of a
hawk, after which the game cock's haunts
knew him no more.
We always bear this in mind. The fact

MONARCH CUSHIONS.
Absolute accuracy of angle throughout the

The Cushions that Built the Largest

Billiard Table Factories
in the World.

There is but One "Monarch" in

the Billiard Universe.
Imitators have found the manufacture of a
"speedy" cushion a comparatively simple matter. They have secured a cushion with a
correct angle in some parts of the table, but

they have never been able to overcome

the more difficult problem of producing
a cushion that would act in the center
of the table precisely the same as it
does nearer to the end rails.

entire length of the cushion rail is an impossibility except by the method employed in the
"Monarch."
Imitators have approached as close to the
line of infringement as they dare, and there
they have met an insurmountable barrier in the
patents of the "Monarch," consequently

THEY HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE

to produce a cushion that will act the same in
all parts of the table, center, corner and ends.

The Patents of the "Monarch"

have made it incontestably
secure against rivals,
The foregoing is a commonplace explanation
of the technical term of "Uniform Resiliency"
used by experts in connection with the "Monarch." It is the fundamental principle of
these celebrated patents, the most important
ones of the many thousands of patents in the
billiard line.

ELEPHANT TUSK IVORY BALL STOCK.

Advice 011 the Purchase and Care of Ivory Balls.

We advise and urge upon customers the exercise of great
care in the treatment of IvoryBilliard and Pool Balls. We import the finest soft Zanzibar elephant tusk ivory, which is thoroughly inspected in our shops before being sent out; but ivory
will break and split if exposed to varying degrees of temperature. We study the interests of our customers when we advise
them to purchase ivory balls during warm weather, so that they
shall be thoroughly acclimated to the room in which they are
to be used before the unsettled weather of fall, winter or spring
sets in. Purchasers must take all the responsibility and risk of
damage on account of climatic changes. The balls leave our
hands perfectly sound, and of the very best material, but we
cannot guarantee them against breaking or splitting at any time
of the year, particularly during the winter months. Avoid exposing the balls to different temperatures of heat and cold.
Changes from cold to warm, or from warm to cold will usually
injure and frequently crack them. Draughts from open doors
and open windows striking the balls while in use on tables are
quite apt to damage them.
We advise positively against the use of sweet oil for
the preservation of ivory.

The oil simply discolors the ivory and makes the ball sticky
and heavy, and causes the ivory to deteriorate.
When the balls are removed from the table, after having 13.:en
in use, they should be wiped with a damp cloth or sponge and then
rubbed thoroughly dry, for which purpose a piece of chamois is
best suited. The use of alchohol is preferable for cleaning ivory
balls, as it evaporates very quickly and therefore does not affect
the ivory, no matter what the condition of the weather may be.

HERE is no item of billiard table equipment

that is of greater importance
than the billiard cues.
Room. keepers are just
beginning to realize the fact
that a well balanced, perfect taper, hand-made
billiard cue is absolutely essential to the games
of billiards or pool.
The cheap turning-lathe product which has
the same care devoted to it as is given to the
turning of a broom handle, no more and no
less, is being rapidly discarded.
Room-keepers are learning from experience
that bargain - counter prices on cues is not a
good investment.
Every cue that we offer for sale or furnish
with our billiard and pool tables is produced
in our own factories and made by trades-union
mechanics who have been in our employ for
many years. These men have become experts
in this line of work. We employ no child or
female labor and have no piecework. Every
cue, from the plain No. 3 to the most elaborate,
is shaped and tapered entirely by hand.
The abominably cheap make of cues offered
by many billiard supply dealers who have no

The Brunswick-Balke-Collender Co.

factories, are produced by planing mill specialty

makers, who turn out billiard cues, broom
handles, base ball bats, golf sticks and jointed
fish poles with equal impartiality. It is with
them, only a question of quantity and price
quality cuts no figure. The printer who gets
up the catalogue in which they are advertised
attends to the quality part of the job. That's
his business.

We don't make mop sticks! We don't make

curtain poles, broom handles or fishing rods!
We just make cues. That's why we know
how to make perfect cues.
Our cues are hand - made. Everyone of
them is shaped by hand to the graceful outlines
and perfect balance which the good billiard
player finds essential for effective work.

SOLID WOOD BUTT CUES

We are the only billiard table company in the
United States which manufactures its own cues, and
the space in our factories devoted to that purpose
covers many thousand square feet.
Our stock of imported fancy woods for cue
butts embraces the choicest selections from foreign
markets of Rosewood, Cocobolo, Amaranth, Mahogany, Coraline, Zebra, Dagaine, Sapote, etc., etc.
Fancy cues vary in weight as do the woods from
which they are made. A light-weight cue cannot
be made from the heavier woods. State weight of
cue wanted and leave selection of wood to us.
No other concern manufacturing billiard cues
takes the same pains w e do in selecting woods to
produce the desired weight of cues.
This is a very essential feature to be considered
when a properly balanced cue is desired.
Our assortment of styles and designs of fancy
wood butt cues is so extensive that it is impossible
to enumerate them all. Besides, we are constantly
adding new and original designs, and many of our
customers prefer to stipulate, when placing theil
order, the amount they wish to invest, leaving the
selection to us. We guarantee, in all such cases,
that our selection will be satisfactory to the customer

Revised Price List

54

LL our billiard
Cues, not excluding the very plainest, that we quote
in our price lists
and furnish with
our tables, are
shaped and given
the graceful taper which characterizes them
by skillful mechanics who are experts in this
class of work. In addition to working up new
cues in a great variety of styles, we also devote
a great deal of attention in this department to
Cue Repairs. A cue shaft that has become
too short by splintering or breaking can be
spliced out to any length and made good as
new at a very small expense.

Second-hand cues can be retapered to any

desired size of point and retipped. Ivory or
hard fibre points can be put on at a very small
cost. You really cannot afford to have a poor
lot of cues in your billiard room. Send them
to us for repairs. Tell us what is necessary
and we will quote you price.

HARP competition among French manu-

facturers of cue tips has, during the past

few years, resulted in radical reductions in
price and a corresponding depreciation in quality. The older school of billiard men have had
good cause of complaint that cue tips are not
what they used to be, without being reminded
of the parable touching the pies that "mother
used to make."
In order to get a good tip that could be
relied upon to give satisfaction to our customers
and that could be recommended as fully equal
to the French tips of ten or fifteen years ago,
we have been compelled to have recourse to an
Italian product, which we believe to be the best
cue tip ever put on the market. We have contracted for the entire output of this establishment.
The cost of this tip is much more, but is
comparatively insignificant when taken into
consideration with the annoyance and expense
of the cheaper tip that is usually unserviceable
and frequently out of condition.

the Monarch Imported Italian Blue Chalk the best

No. 4 Loose flange irons with bolts, no leather P.35

Black Cover Leathers,

This is the most perfect, durable and best appearing pocket

iron yet introduced. As the cut illustrates, each flange is made
in two parts, the top or ornamental portion of the flange being
separated from the flange proper which fits into the rail of the
table. It will also be noticed that the pocket bolt passes into the
upper flange, thus relieving the flange attached to the pocket
iron from any strain when the bolt is adjusted.
The advantage of this style of pocket iron over any other
heretofore offered will be quite apparent. These pocket irons
are made unusually heavy and strong, and yet should one become broken, it will be necessary to replace only the iron with
the rough flange (at a merely nominal cost), as the ornamental
flange will never break and can always be used should the
pocket iron have to be replaced as described.

This style of Pocket Iron is used only on our higher
grade of Pool Tables such as the Pfister, Warwick,
etc. As may be observed from the above cut it has
a shape peculiar to itself, differing from all other
styles. Instead of being bolted in place on top of
he cushion rail it fits into the ends of the rail at
either side of the pocket opening. It has unusual
strength and is of course a considerable improvement in appearance as compared with the other
forms.

How to Set up a Billiard

or Pool Table.
OR convenience in reference we have shown on page 79 a sectional view of a

pool table. In this diagram all parts are marked by letter simply for convenience in reference.
NOTE :In some of our billiard and pool tables we are shipping the frame
work of the body of table i. e. the parts A. B. and C. in one piece.
If the whole table is shipped in sections, to set in place, proceed as follows:
First place the legs and ends B. in the proper position on the floor, and bolt
the sides No. A into them, as marked by the numbers 1-1, 2-2, etc. These
numbers are stamped in the wood on top. Use bolts No. K, wrench No. L.
See that the tenons of the sides No. A are well down in the mortise at No. C.
If not, knock them firmly in, taking care to put a piece of wood on top of the sid
to keep it from being bruised with the hammer Next put in the stretcher or
cross braces No. E. as marked. The table must then be leveled by putting pieces
of wood of requisite thickness under the legs, until a spirit level and a straightedge, the whole length as well as across the table, will show a perfect level.
Find the highest part and level tile rest up to that.

Now put on the slabs of slate, No. F, putting the slab marked "head" on
the corresponding part of the frame which is also marked head. The slates must
then be screwed down all around the edges first, and leveled again with a spirit
level and straight edge. When this is done the screws in the middle are to be
inserted and screwed perfectly tight. After all the screws are in and the bed
satisfactory, fill up the screw holes and joints with plaster of paris, mixed to
the consistency of thick cream and put on quickly, taking care to scrape the
filling stuff perfectly even with the bed. When thoroughly dry, the whole must
be made smooth with sandpaper. 15 to 30 minutes time is required for drying
the plaster of paris.
Next put on the bed cloth, (we cover the cushions with cloth before shipment) with grain or nap running from the head towards opposite end of the
table, and draw it as tight as possible, taking care that there are no wrinkles or
creases. In putting on the cloth, tack it for a few inches at one corner, then pull
the cloth tightly to the corner at the end of the table, same side, putting a few
tacks to hold it while the whole of that side ls being tacked; put the tacks about
two and a half inches apart. When one side is done, do the same on the opposite side, pulling the cloth evenly and as tight as possible without tearing it:
next tack the end and head of the table in the same manner
Four chalk cups No. 0 should be screwed on the cushion rails before they are

put on the table.

CHANOINO BILLIARD TABLES TO POOL

SHOULD you desire to have the rails of your
BILLIARD TABLE altered to POOL at any of our
manufactories (which we would advise, as thereby
the best of workmanship is secured ), remove the rails
from the table and ship to us by express or freight.
If you ship by express it will not be necessary to box
the rails. Wrapping them in burlap to protect
against injury in transit will be sufficient for the purpose. We will cut the billiard rails to 6 pocket pool,
furnishing new pocket irons, best worsted pockets,
fringe and trim leathers, including boxing for shipment of the rails to you, at the net price of $15.00.
It will not be necessary to ship the slate beds
or the wood framework of the table to us. You can
cut the slate slab for the 6-pocket openings, using a
common saw for the purpose. When making return
of the cushion rails to you we will furnish wood
pocket pieces cut to the shape of the pocket openings.

By using these it will not be necessary for you

to cut the slate pieces in circular shape. We furnish full and explicit instructions for this part of
the work, which is really very simple.

The Pool Counter Ball Rack (our own patent)

is the latest and best system for marking pool
games. It is specially adapted for use in connection with pool tables fitted with our Patent
Pool Trough Attachment. The rack is fitted
with a number of spheres, eight in each row,
parti-colored red and white, and which are
intended to represent the balls pocketed by the
various players during the progress of a game.
At the commencement of a game all the white
surfaces appear. As the players score, the
marker turns the counters around until the red
surface shows. Each red ball placed to a
player's credit shows how many balls he has
pocketed. When the game is ended, a simple
movement of the lever shown in the engraving
causes each red disc to turn simultaneously
and only the white spheres are visible. This is
one of the best inventions introduced in a
billiard room for years.

The upper portion has two rows of markers, fifty on each

string, for ordinary billiards or pool, while directly beneath
the "buttons" or markers is a full-sized pin-pool board of the
latest and most approved design; under this is a ball rack for
use in games of fifteen ball or continuous pool. The lower
portion of the stand is enclosed, cabinet style, with two neatly
paneled doors fitted with locks and keys. There is a drawer
above the cabinet, also furnished with a lock and key, in
which such small supplies as chalk, cue tips, sandpaper, etc.,
can be kept. The cue rack is arranged for the reception of
six or twelve cues on either side of the stand, as may be
desired. The entire outfit is constructed with particular
regard to the requirements of private residences, for which it
was especially designed.
The stand can be made without the cabinet or pin-pool
board. The drawer, is nevertheless, retained in its present
position, but where the pin-pool board is omitted the markers
are considerably lower down. The entire structure does not
occupy a space in excess of seven feet by four feet.

Oxford Cue Cabinet

Our Oxford Cue Cabinet is now extensively used
in all of the largest billiard halls in the United
States. It has a very large capacity and is especially
designed for private cues. The drawers are arranged
with a double slide attachment at either end, which
makes them easy of access and prevents their tilting
when pulled out the full width. The cues are laid
horizontally in grooved receptacles made to conform to the hand shaped taper given to all of our
fancy cues, so that there is no tendency in the cues
to warp or get crooked.
These cabinets are furnished in handsomely
figured quarter-sawed oak or to match the finish of
the tables with which they are to be used.

Rack:
This style of cabinet and cue rack finds great
favor among billiard men, by reason of its serving
the double purpose of receptacles for coats, hats and
making a handy cue rack, without the necessity for
disfiguring the walls of the room with the conventional rack ordinarily used in smaller places. The
cabinet is made so that it will accommodate one-half
dozen cues on either end. The interior is supplied
with coat and hat hooks.
It is made in handsomely figured oak, also in
birch, finished in mahogany color.
