I. Course Overview
The IB Spanish course is a two-year course of study which meets the requirements of the IB
program. Students further develop their creative and critical thinking abilities, increasing skills and
knowledge necessary for them to be contributing world citizens and lifelong learners. This course
prepares students for the required IB examination in Spanish to be taken at the end of their
senior/junior year.
II. Class Objectives
At the conclusion of the year students are expected to be able to:
communicate clearly, fluently, and effectively in a wide range of situations.
understand and use accurately the oral and written forms of the language, in a range of
styles and situations.
understand and use an extensive range of vocabulary and idioms.
select a register and a style that are consistently appropriate to the situation.
express ideas with clarity and fluency.
structure arguments in a focused, coherent and persuasive way, and support them with
relevant examples.
engage in detailed, critical examination of a wide range of texts in different forms, styles,
and registers.
show sensitivity to the culture(s) related to the language studied.

V. Assessment
a. Homework: NO credit will be given for late assignments. Incomplete assignments
will not receive full credit.
b. Tests and Quizzes: These are given after each unit of vocabulary and grammar.
Speaking, listening, reading, and writing will all be assessed. Comprehensive first and
second semester exams will be given upon the completion of semesters. STUDENTS
WILL NOT BE ABLE TO RE-TAKE EXAMS IN IB1.

c. Speaking and Writing: You will be responsible for taking writing and speaking
assessments to assess your proficiency and establish goals for improvement. These
assessments will be completed without a dictionary or notes throughout the year.
d. Participation: This is an essential part of acquiring a language, and 30% of the IB
Assessment in IB2 is speaking. Your voluntary participation is required during class to be
successful in this course.
e. Extra Credit: It is important that grades are a direct reflection of students
proficiency levels in Spanish, therefore students will not receive extra credit in Spanish.

VI. Attendance
School attendance is essential to being successful in school. The school-wide attendance policy will
be strictly enforced. Please refer to the student handbook for details (pgs. 38-41). If you know you will
be absent, please contact me beforehand to find out what will be missed.
VII. Individual Assistance
Help sessions are offered after school during my office hours. If you are having trouble in Spanish,
do not wait until the end of the six weeks or semester to attend a help session. Im here to help you,
and the sooner you come the better! If you need further help, please see your counselor as soon as
possible to have them set up a meeting with a tutor from IB2.

No food, drinks, or gum in class. (Water is the only exception.)
No cellphones or IPad unless the teacher has given instruction to use

Inappropriate behavior can cause a variety of consequences including warning, student/teacher


conference, detention, parent/teacher conference, and meeting with administrator and parents.
Extreme behavior: Student will be referred to the office in cases of insubordination or extreme
outbursts. (See student handbook for school policies.)
IX. Technology in the Classroom
Cell phones and other electronic devices are to be off and put away during class. Students are only
permitted to use electronic devices with explicit teacher direction for educational purposes.
1st Offense: Warning.
2nd Offense: Teacher takes the device.
3rd Offense: Teacher takes the device and brings it to the student's administrator.
