The Nice Guys

In 1970s Los Angeles, bumbling private eye

Holland March (Ryan Gosling) and muscle-forhire Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe) become
unlikely partners. They find themselves both
looking for a missing woman named Amelia
(Margaret Qualley) following the death of a
high-profile porn star. Amelias ties to the
deceased actress are unclear, but the investigation reveals a much bigger problem of
corruption within the federal government.

RESIDENT PROFILE

Cindy and Al Phillips

After suffering through a couple of awful Iowa winters,
we finally decided that it was time to carry out our
long-term plan to move somewhere ice is found in a
cocktail glass and not on the roads. And where wind
chill is a foreign concept. After prior travels had ruled
out Florida, we came down to the Valley of the Sun
in the spring of 2014 and spent a week visiting five
over-55 communities that we had researched. Festival
happened to be our last stop, and it was obvious to
both of us that this was the place; great facilities,
very nice homes, but mostly the people we encountered were wonderful. So, after dinner at the Indigo
Grille, we returned to the sales center the next day
and began the home buying process.
In August of 2014, we happily left the snow shovel,
snow blower, and lawn mower behind (and unhappily, many old and dear friends), and made the move
to Arizona. We lived in an apartment in Peoria while
our Festival home was being built. Then, in November
2014, we picked up the house keys and we finally
landed in Festival.
We met many years ago when we were both working
for the same insurance company in Des Moines, Iowa.
Al retired in 2009 after spending the last third of his
career working as a programmer and writing software
for an actuarial department (calm your excitement)!
Cindy left behind her management position at the
insurance company, and at the advanced age of 50,
went back to school and earned her Mortuary Science
degree (this wasnt your usual career progression).
She then spent about a decade working as a funeral
director and found it to be a very fulfilling second
career. Cindy retired last January after working at
Sunland Funeral Home in Sun City. Her transition to
retired life took about a minute.

fyi

Some miscellaneous tidbits about us... Cindy comes

from a family of 15 kids, and Al comes from a family
of 2 kids, so that was culture shock for Al. Cindy has
over 1200 skydives, and Al has a little over 1700.
Were not nuts... honest. Al likes to cook, Cindy
doesnt, and were both happy about that.
Cindy has recently taken up golf, started doing some
work in the glass studio, and plays mahjong with a
neighborhood group. Al has been doing some work in
the pottery studio. We both get into the gym regularly
and love the periodic entertainment that performs
in the ballroom. We make it over to the Indigo Bar
enough that if we start a tab the bartenders dont
have to ask us our name anymore. Our days seem to
be constantly busy. We live in a wonderful community
and a wonderful neighborhood with the best neighbors you can have. We havent seen snow, ice, or
sub-zero temperatures for almost two years... whats
not to like!

Festival Veterans Club

NEW!
The intent of the Festival Veterans Club is to
provide support, education, socialization and
information for Veterans, their spouses and any
other community member with an interest in
supporting our troops in the Armed Forces.
Federal and Department of Defense employees are
encouraged to join also. We know that without the
support of our spouses, that our involvement and
success could not have been possible. We want to
open our meetings to our spouses, and be able to
provide insight into our benefit systems.

The membership dues are yearly, and the cost is $10.00 per year from
January 1 through January 1 of the next year.
Our Festival Veterans Membership mailbox is located in the library. We have
emailed applications to all interested individuals. Please contact Ron Alexander at raexa6usn@gmail.com for an application if you are interested or for

Ways Exercise Improves

h e a l t h

by Chuck Eier, M.S. C.S.C.S.,

Fitness/Wellness Director

The benefits of exercise are many. Some are different than the typical things we
think about.
Movement eases stiff, achy joints. Though counterintuitive, rest isnt ideal to
reduce pain and stiffness in knees, shoulders, and back. According to a
Stanford research scientist, healthy adults who performed consistent aerobic
activity reported 25% less musculoskeletal pain than sedentary peers.
Exercise causes the release of the bodys natural pain relievers called endorphins. Endorphins may also help protect against tiny tears in tendons and
muscles. In research conducted at the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill, arthritis sufferers felt 25% less pain and 16% less stiffness after six months
of low-impact balance and strengthening exercises. Most felt improvement in
just a few weeks.
Exercise helps crank up the bodys natural energy production. 50% of adults
report feeling tired at least one day a week. Regular exercise boosts fatiguefighting brain chemicals and hormones. Dopamine and norepinephrine help you
feel more energetic. And, serotonin acts as a mood-enhancer. So, when fatigue
kicks in, take a brisk 30-minute walk instead of grabbing a cup of coffee.
Being active also improves sleep. The journal Sleep Medicine reports women
age 60 and older who walked or danced for at least an hour, four times per
week, woke up half as often and slept an average of 48 more minutes than
sedentary women. With age, sleep patterns change and we spend more of the
night in the lighter sleep phases. Exercise can help maintain deeper sleep.
Diabetes risk is reduced through exercise. Walking two miles five-times per week
can be more effective at controlling blood sugar and preventing diabetes than
running twice as much. Moderate exercise like walking is fueled mostly by fat.
This may improve the bodys ability to reduce insulin and control blood sugar.
The eyes will also benefit from exercise. An active lifestyle can reduce risk of
age-related macular degeneration by up to 70%. The benefit of exercise on the
eyes is the same as that of the heart. Improvement of blood flow and reduction
of blood pressure is the key.
In addition to helping the heart and keeping the waistline smaller, exercise
provides many benefits we dont always think about.
