moonshinesbyreflectedsunlight,soheargued,ifonemeasuredtheangle
betweenthemoonandsunwhenthemoonisexactlyhalfilluminatedthen
onecouldcomputetheratiooftheirdistances.Aristarchusestimatedthatthe
angleatthetimeofhalfilluminationwas87sotheratioofthedistancesis
sin3.Ofcourse,wehavetranslatedthisintomodernnotationfor
Aristarchusdidnotusedegreesnorhadtrigonometrybeeninventedsohe
didnothavethesinefunctionathisdisposal.Howeverthisisineffectthe
calculationhemade,correctinprincipleyetalmostimpossiblydifficultto
observeinpracticesincedeterminingthemomentatwhichhalfillumination
ofthemoonoccurscanonlybeveryinaccuratelyfound.

SunmovedaroundEarth,itcarriedtheseorbitalcenterswithit.Thus,
VenusandMercurywerealwaysfoundclosetotheSun.
