EMCCD Technology providing single photon sensitivity
… The Andor iXon

Andor TechnologyTM leads in scientific imaging by developing and manufacturing

products to support its global customer base. Andor has developed imaging and
spectroscopy products that allow you to perform experiments that were previously
impossible without EMCCD (Electron Multiplying CCD) technology. With the iXon,
Andor have produced a dedicated, compact, truly high-end platform, designed
specifically to get the absolute best from EMCCD sensors.

Unparalleled customer benefits include:

 Technology Excellence:
The iXon camera range combines Andor’s pioneering EMCCD technology with
front illuminated or back illuminated CCD technology, to detect extremely weak
photon levels. The iXon is having a profound influence on the field of low-light dy-
namic cellular microscopy, combining photon collection efficiencies of up to 95%
QE with the ability to virtually eliminate the read noise detection limit. The system
offers multiple readout speeds up to 35MHz, 14- and 16-bit digitization, and
benefits fromnegligible dark current with unequaled thermoelectric cooling down
to –90˚C.

 All Metal Hermetic Vacuum Seal:

Andor’s iXon range also employs an exclusive hard metal hermetic vacuum seal,
which not only allows for more effective TE cooling, but also affords complete
protection of the sensor from condensates or moisture, an essential feature for any
high-end CCD. This innovation also means only one window in front of the sensor
(as opposed to two), increasing photon throughput.

 Wide Range of Imaging Applications:

The iXon is the ideal camera range for a wide variety of ultra low-light, dynamic
imaging experiments such as Single Molecule Detection, Live Cell Multi-Dimen-
sional Microscopy, Confocal Microscopy, Intracellular Ion Signaling, and Cell
Motility. Using Andor’s EMCCD technology enables:

 Shorter exposure times

(facilitating faster frame rates)

 Reduced excitation powers

 Lower dye concentrations

 Higher magnifications
