C-Cerpants swim into Medford

East Coast USA competitive swim team establishes new home
By LINDSEY NOLEN
The Sun
The East Coast C-Cerpants
USA Competitive Swim Team
has been doing amazing things
as a team, but because pool time
has become limited, head coach

Donny Cotter has been looking

to expand his team into other regions to offer his swimmers additional training opportunities.
His first expansion has landed a
branch of the Ocean City-founded swim team in Medford.
As great timing presented it-

self for the team to partner with

another outstanding swim program to uniformly build into a
U.S. Competitive Swim Team,
the ECCC saw it ideal to partner
with Future Fitness in Medford
please see TEAM, page 10

Each school year brings many

new faces the staff of Shawnee
High School remains dedicated to
educating. This year, new classes
and opportunities will help the
school further advance its educational opportunities and goals.
This year, Shawnee will be running 16 Advanced Placement
courses with more than 700 students enrolled in the AP program.
AP U.S. history has quickly become the most popular AP course
with 105 students enrolled in only
its second year of being offered at
Shawnee.
Additionally, students in the
Lenape Regional High School District will have the ability to earn
college credits while taking
Shawnee classes. The school offers 62 classes that are eligible for
dual credits with Rowan College
of Burlington County and two
classes that are eligible for dual
credits with Rowan University.
Shawnee is implementing the
second year of Project Lead the
Way, a district-wide four-year
STEM program funded by Lockheed Martin, an American global
aerospace, defense, security and
advanced technologies company.
Through this initiative, the
school will offer the course Envi-

ronmental Sustainability for the

first time.
First and foremost, I am excited having the students back in the
building, Principal Matthew
Campbell said. I am really looking forward to the second year
with our new schedule. There are
so many possibilities to enhance
what we do at Shawnee with this
schedule, especially during the
community lunch and learn period.
More renovations to the school
will include eight updated models
of the schools driving simulators
to enable students to develop safe
driving skills in authentic and
practical ways. The new driving
simulators will be installed and
used by Health 2 students to help
promote safe driving skills.
The different scenarios that
the students are faced with [while
operating the simulators] allow
them to see the dire consequences
that can be associated with making bad decisions when they are
operating without paying what
could be a tragic cost, Campbell
said. Textbooks alone cannot
prepare students for what they
will face on the road. The simulators provide the most realistic experience for students other than
actual road driving.

With the 2016-2017 school year

just around the corner for students across the Lenape Regional
High School District, the Board of
Education took one last moment
at its Aug. 24 meeting to reflect on
last years many achievements.
Director of programs and planning Matthew Webb said last
years 2015-2016 school year saw
students score an average of 1589
on their SAT exams. Webb said
the districts average score was
greater than the state average by
81 points and greater than the average of the United States by 99
points.
Webb said the 1589 score was

also noteworthy as data released

by the College Board shows students who earn a score of 1550 or
more on their SAT exams have a
65 percent likelihood of getting a
B- or better GPA during their
freshman year of college, which
has high likelihood of translating
to college graduation.
Another area of note Webb
pointed out was that 85 percent of
district students who took AP
exams last school year earned
passing scores of three, four or
five.
We had more students in more
AP classes than ever, taking more
exams than ever, earning more
three-plus scores than ever beplease see BIRNBOHM, page 11

Medford Leas plans forum for Sept. 10

Travel from England to America on a ship in the late 1600s by
studying the journey of Elizabeth
Webb with her direct descendent,
Midge Webb-Dey, in a Medford
Leas forum to be held on Saturday, Sept. 10 from 11 a.m. to noon
in the Medford Leas theater located at 1 Medford Leas Way.
Webb, who lived from 1663 to
1726, was a minister of the Religious Society of Friends and traveled to America to visit several
important Quaker meetings with
her companion, Mary Rogers.

After her visit with Rogers and

return to England, Webb eventually returned to America where
she settled in Pennsylvania with
her husband, Richard, for the last
two decades of her life.
Although Webb initially only
spent two years in America, she
traveled as far south as Virginia
and as far north as New Hampshire, journaling the entire time.
Webb-Dey will share Webbs remarkable story, beginning with
her departure from England in
1697, in this program titled Ad-

ventures of Elizabeth Webb. The

lecture, which will include
Webbs conversion and call to the
Quaker ministry, is being offered
at no charge and registration is
not required.
Medford Leas is a nationally
accredited, not-for-profit community guided by Quaker principles
for those aged 55 and older, with
campuses in Medford and Lumberton.
For more information, call
(609) 654-3000 or visit www.medfordleas.org.

In the next few weeks, well have

and excitement on the horizon for the
2016-2017 school year.
At The Sun, were all about community news, which, of course, includes
covering the local school districts.
Well be at as many school board meetings as possible and do our best to stay

But we want to be able to bring our

we can share that news with the entire

section of our paper to do just that to

Making the honor roll, winning a

Problem is, we dont always hear

If youre a teacher or principal, and

well have a reporter present to cover

Too often, the news is driven by
events that anger or sadden people.
Too often, the good work of young people is ignored or, at the least, certainly
not celebrated the way it should be.
We want to change that. We want to
let everyone in town know when
theres something positive going on,
when young people go beyond the ordinary to help someone or have an outstanding accomplishment.
Call, email or write. Just let us know
whats happening in your school so we

Medford Friends Meeting hosts Memorial to The Lost

Lawn of Quaker Meetinghouse to display forest of shirts depicting victims of gun violence
The Medford Friends Meeting (Quakers)
are hosting a Memorial to the Lost on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 14 Union St. The
memorial will remain on-site until Saturday, Oct. 1.
At this event, the front lawn of Medfords Quaker Meetinghouse will display a
veritable forest of mounted t-shirts, each
inscribed with the name, age and death
date of a gun violence victim. Standing in
rows, the shirts will form a graphic representation of gun violence carnage here and

across the nation.

Medford Friends Meeting is collaborating with Heeding Gods Call to End Gun Violence a faith-based, non-profit movement
headquartered in Philadelphia. Several
faith groups have mounted the memorial
in the Delaware Valley region.
This event shares the Heeding Gods Call
to End Gun Violence mission: to increase
the awareness of the tragic toll exacted by
gun violence. The goal is to bring greater
awareness to South Jersey and to encour-

faith groups to host the memorial and
carry the message across the region.
Everyone is invited and encouraged to
attend this event, especially seeing as gun
carnage is a national tragedy, taking an average of more than 30,000 lives nationally
each year.
At the event, some on-site parking will
be available, as well as street parking and
more municipal parking across Union
Street.

and, in turn, to provide a strong
competitive swim program option for local swimmers.
Burlington County has almost
created its own unique swimming
hub. There's a great love for the
sport and a need for the smaller
personalized training environments, Cotter said. Not every
child is ready or comfortable for
larger programs or training environments. We see this as a great
opportunity to fill a need and provide the quality training in a personalized setting.
Priding itself on the quality of
stroke instruction and maximizing each swimmers time in the
pool for efficient training, the program progressively works to

build skills at every level and for

every stroke. The ECCC swim
team puts a high priority on the
longevity of the sport through
healthy lifestyle and proper technique for injury prevention.
Our foundation is built on
drills that build solid technique
without adding excess physical
stress to the body, Cotter, a lifelong resident of Egg Harbor
Township, said. It's not about
how much you squeeze in a practice if there's no focus on how it's
done. Solid technique training,
small class sizes, attention to detail along with an emphasis on
the core values of integrity and
sportsmanship make us unique.
Offering training opportunities for boys and girls ages 4 to 18,
the team caters to all skill levels,
beginning swimmers through national-level competitive swimmers. Focusing on the basics of

swimming, the teams personalized setting and close attention to

stroke detail has made a difference to swimmers and parents
alike. Cotter said thus far, he has
received a positive response from
parents and that most swimmers
are excited at what they see they
are capable of learning.
"Winning all the medals and
the Mini-Champ High Point trophy is my favorite part. That's because I'm going to the Olympics
and winning a gold medal,
Ocean City resident Mackenzie
Blizzard, 6, said.
The team competes in the Middle Atlantic Division and partakes in a variety of swim meets
in the Delaware Valley area. More
advanced level swimmers have
the opportunity to compete at national level competitions at venues that span the East Coast and
the country. Competing at these
meets with other swimmers their
age helps swimmers on the ECCC
foster personal growth and confidence in the sport.
Additionally, the team seeks to
maximize training efficiency and
its time in the pool by running
fast sets, while minimizing injury
by utilizing kick sets to the maximum ability. It also retains the
mindset that, to be a champion,
swimmers have to adopt a healthy
lifestyle and develop their selfvalue as well as a respect for their
environment and competitors. Ultimately, the team projects the
message that swim training
builds life skills.
I see this program reaching
great heights. We will keep the
swimmer-to-coach ratio low, and
the focus on solid stroke technique high, Cotter said. We will
train every swimmer to reach
their fullest potential and fulfill
their desire for achievement in
the sport.

Birnbohm discusses prep for new year

BIRNBOHM
Continued from page 2
fore, and were really proud of
that, Webb said.
Webb said 95.5 percent of students in the district graduated
last year, which was about four
points higher than Burlington
County, almost six points higher
than the state and about 13 points
higher than the national rate.
Beyond academics, Webb said
this year, Lenape District TV once
again participated in the U Got
Brains Champion Schools Competition where high schools in
the state had to develop teen driving safety programs. This past
school year was the fifth time in
the past six years the districts
Heads Up, Eyes Forward! program won a grand prize.
Webb also said last year was
another great year for the district
in terms of donations received.
When last years figure was combined with the previous eight
years, when the district began
tracking donation figures, Webb
said the district has received
more than $2.5 million.
In keeping with the theme of
community giving, Webb said last
year was the sixth year the district held a senior day of service,
with more than 1,500 seniors
doing community work at 90
sites.
Webb also said for the fourth

consecutive year, all four schools

in the district were designated as
No Place for Hate by the AntiDefamation League Program as a
result of school-wide, anti-bias
projects that were completed.

Looking ahead
In addition to reviewing the
previous school year at the meeting, Superintendent Carol Birnbohm also looked forward to how
the district has been preparing
for the new year about to start.
Birnbohm said the summer
months were not only a good time
for teachers to refresh and rejuvenate, but also a time to provide
teachers the opportunity to work
on their professional development.

Birnbohm said 32 teachers

began a studying skillful teaching graduate class, with another
20 teachers beginning graduate
work through an investigating
obstacles to instruction course.
According to Birnbohm, the
district also had 13 teachers attend advancement placement
workshops, with seven attending
Project Lead the Way certification courses. Project Lead the
Way works as a non-profit organization to help schools develop Science, Technology, Engineering
and Math curriculum.
A lot of professional development occurred over the summer,
and were excited our teachers
took that opportunity, Birnbohm
said.
