CHBE 4510 Product and Process Design and Economics

Course Objectives
1. To teach students basic concepts in process design; bounding, searching over discrete
and continuous alternatives, targeting, tradeoffs and decision making.
2. To teach students basic skills in process design; economic evaluation, sizing and
costing of process units, process simulation, basic optimization.
3. To prepare students for the capstone senior design project by engaging in small group
work and reflection on group practices.

By the end of this course, a student should:
1. Be knowledgeable about the kinds of design decisions that challenge process design

5. Understand process simulators and be able to use them in process creation,
equipment sizing and costing, profitability analysis, and optimization.( Student

6. Understand the importance of selecting reaction paths that do not involve toxic or
hazardous chemicals, and when unavoidable, to reduce their presence by shortening
residence times and reducing storage. (Student Outcomes: a, b, c, e, f, j, k)
7. Be able to distribute the chemicals, when designing a process flowsheet, to account
for the presence of inert species, to purge species that would otherwise accumulate to
unacceptable levels, to achieve high selectivity to the desired products, and to
accomplish reactions and separations in the same vessel when possible.( Student

8. Be able to apply heuristiccs in selecting chemical reactors or reactor trains, and in
selecting separation processes to separate liquids, vapors, vapor-liquid mixtures, and
vapor-liquid-solid mixtures. (Student Outcomes: a, e, k)
9. Be familiar with the most widely used industrial separations and their basis for
separation.(Student Outcomes: a, e, k)
10. Understand how distillation columns are sequenced and how to apply heuristics to
narrow the search for a near optimal sequence. (Student Outcomes: a, e, k)
11. Be able to determine the second law efficiency of a process and pinpoint the major
areas of inefficiency (lost work).( Student Outcomes: a, e, k)
12. Understand the concepts and application of heat and power integration to minimize
energy requirements for chemical process plants. (Student Outcomes: a, e, k)

Prerequisites:
Transport Phen. II (ChBE 3210), Kinetics & Reactor Design (ChBE 4300), and separation
processes (ChBE 3225). A minimum grade of C is required in all three courses. Process
safety course (ChBE 4515) is a co-requisite, it may be taken simultaneously with the process
Design.

At the end of the semester, no additional "bailout" or "rescue" make-up assignments will be
given for any reason to be fair with all students who work hard throughout the semester.
However, the instructor will be always happy to see you and discuss how to perform better in
the final exam to improve your final grade. Feel free to drop by during the office hours if you
feel that you need help.
Exams:
There will be two exams: midterm and final exams. All exams will be closed book. You
will be allowed to bring to the exam a single 8.5x11 sheet of paper with formulas,
algorithms, and other information written on one side only.

If you have any unavoidable conflict, you must let the instructor know in writing two weeks
prior to the exam date. Make up exams will be scheduled only for unavoidable conflicts. No
makeup exam will be given if the conflict was not reported two weeks prior to the exam date
at the latest.
Homework:
Homework assignments are to be turned in electronically through T-Square. The files must
be uploaded before 08:20am on the day it is due. This deadline is rigidly enforced by TSquare.
All assignments should be submitted electronically. You can use any electronic format (e.g.
scanned copy, MS Word, PDF). Photo of your handwriting using your cell phone is allowed
only if it is taken clearly.
You must confirm yourself that your file is submitted on T-Square. Many students forget to
click the submit button after uploading their files (this is the reason for the problem in
100% of all cases in our experience). You are also able to resubmit your file as many times as
you like until the deadline.
Paper submission of your hand calculations is also allowed, but not encouraged. If you still
prefer the option of paper submission, you take all of the following penalty risks: (1) Paper
submission must be done to the instructor by 08:05am. Any late submission after this time
would be subject to the penalty of 50-100% (see below). Please make sure you staple your
submissions; we will not be responsible for any loss of pages from unstapled submissions.
Homework must be completed neatly; if the graders cannot easily understand the solution
due to poor presentation (sloppy, unorganized and unclear writing), up to 50% of the points
will be deducted even if the answer is correct.
The homework turned in must be your own work. You may discuss technical concepts
relating to the homework with your classmates, but must work the problems and write the
code by yourself. Copying directly from another persons homework or exam is a serious
violation of the Georgia Tech Honor Code (http://www.honor.gatech.edu/).
Late submission for homework:
50% until the end of class (08:55am) on the due date. After this time, no submission will be
accepted without any exception.
Project reports:
Students work in a group to tackle two design projects. The class will be split into group of a
small number of students. For each project, only one report should be submitted from each
group by the due date of each phase.
Make sure to submit your report by the deadline. Late submission by the end of due date
incurs a penalty of 30% per day. After the due date, there will be a penalty of 30% per day. If

the student who is supposed to submit the report misses the due date, the same penalty will
apply to all students in the group.
You will also be required to fill out group evaluation forms for yourself and your group
members for each phase of the project that are turned in separately. This evaluation will be
used as evidence to support the distribution of percentage effort. If you rank someone as
having made above average contribution across most categories it will be expected that the
point distribution reflect that evaluation. Similarly if you rank someone as having made zero
contribution to most of the project then again this should be reflected in the point
distribution.
The same grade will be given to all group members if all members equally contributed. If
you feel that the contribution from each group member is not equal, you will indicate this on
the cover sheet of the report. All members of the group are required to sign the report cover
sheet prior to handing the report in. If the cover sheet is not signed it is assumed that the
distribution of the effort is under dispute and you need to organize a meeting with the
instructor to resolve the differences. You will be required to complete a reflection on your
own contribution to the group and turn this in separately.
Communications with instructors through T-Square:
Students are always encouraged to ask questions. We are always available during office
hours. Attend the office hours of the instructor and the assigned TA for this section if you
have any questions (they will be grading your assignments!). If you have trouble following
lectures, please try to see us as soon as possible. The instructor will be happy to help you by
giving supplemental practice problems and discussing your study plan.
You are always welcome to ask questions even out of class, but you should choose the most
appropriate communication format depending on your situation. In particular, please note
that we do not use email in this course. See below for communication options:

T-Square Piazza: All electronic communications should be done through T-Square


Piazza. Questions about how to solve problems in assignments, quizzes, and final
exam should be posted as public questions. Personal questions such as concerns
about your grade or request for appointments should be posted as personal posts.
Please allow at least 12-24 hours for responses. See below for details.
Office hours: You are always encouraged to come to the instructor's and TAs' office
hours. If these hours do not work, you can make an appointment (see below).

T-Square Piazza:
In this course, we use Piazza on T-Square as the official communication tool instead of
email. You can post any question here (projects, lectures, course schedule, etc). Public
questions will be viewed by other students, and it can be helpful to others.

You can also send private messages to instructors and TAs through Piazza only for more
specific or personal questions. We use Piazza instead of regular email for personal
communications such as concerns about your grade or appointments.
Questions on Forums will not be responded by the instructor or TA for the first 12 hours. We
will wait for other students at least for 12 hours. If nobody answers correctly, the instructors
or TAs will step in and answer your questions.
Regrading:
Requests for regrading of a homework assignment or an exam may be submitted in writing
within one week of the day the homework or exam is handed back to the class (regardless of
whether or not you attend class that day). You must justify in writing the technical basis for
the regrade. If the regarding request is accepted, your entire homework or exam may be
regarded. Please do not assume that your grade will always go up after regrading.
To create a fair environment for all students, all deadlines will be strictly enforced. If you
