DIMENSIONING HEATING PIPE

Pipe dimensions are mainly depending from the thermal capacity [kW] which have to be
transmitted. The given pressure loss[p], summary of resistance index [] of the installations
like branches and elbows as well as differences of temperature [T] between primary and
secondary pipeline are additional parameter which have to be considered.
For judgement determination of pipe diameters, the dimensions of the following table may be
used, without any guarantee. The exact determination of the dimension will normally calculated
by the appointed engineering- resp. design office for heating- and sanitary technology or by the
project owner, user of the pipeline respectively directly by the energy-supply-company (ESC).

Dimension Steel Pipe

Max. perm. bow-angle

Circle segment at rmin and 12,00 m

Bowed pipes are bended mechanically, according

to the direction of the pipeline and the permissible
bending radius, corresponding to the data of the
local management of works (bowed angle and
radius) by use of approx. 2,00 m long straight pipe
ends. Only production with PEHD-jacket of 6 m or
12 m length will be possible. Orders should clearly
indicate angle, radius and direction of bending, left
or right (depending from course of leak detecting).
This parameter will be determined by isoplus in
case of requirement.

MEDIUM PIPE SANITARY

General
Sanitary pipes should be used only in case of a medium temperature below 60 C. In case of
galvanized pipes at temperatures > 60 C the lime-corrosion protection layer will be wearied,
that means that an electrolytic protection will be necessary. Limiting value for galvanized pipes
acc. to DIN 50 930 T 3. Delivery length of galvanized pipes in 6 m, copper pipes in 5 m as
standard.
Connections of galvanized pipes may be carried out up to nominal dimension of 2" with
thread-sockets and should be made generally and preferably by use of a special hard-soldering
procedure. Starting from 3 soldering procedure should be generally used.
Copper pipes have to be connected by use of capillary-oil-fittings acc. to DIN 2856 with the
same wall thickness as those of the pipe bars. Expanding of the copper pipes is not permitted.
The guidelines and/or regulations of the manufacturer of the fittings, concerning soldering
procedure and kind of soldering have to be considered. For application as solar pipeline special
suitable press-fittings have to be used exclusively.
Concerning specification resp. quality of the medium-pipe preferably the data of the purchaser
will be considered. Independent from this the following quality will be available as a standard:

1. Black Galvanized Steel Pipe

Circular, unalloyed, high frequency welded (W) or seamless (S) middle-loaded thread-pipe,
material St 37.0, No. 1.0254. Dimension and measures up to 6 in dependence to DIN 2440,
technical delivery conditions acc. to DIN 1626 or DIN 1629. Nominal pressure at liquids PN 25,
at air and harmless gases PN 10. All pipes acc. to EN 10 204 - 3.1 B with acceptance certificate
(APZ) approved.
Hot-galvanized (B) of the inside and outside surface by use of melt-dipping-procedure acc. to
DIN 2444 resp. EN 10 240 (B.1) with DVGW-test mark. Thickness of layer at pipe-inside area at
least 400g/m2 or 56 m, up to 3 by blowing out, planished by steam and tested acc. to DIN 50
952.
Alternatively with plain ends or pipe-thread acc. to DIN 2999 T 1 (cone 1:16) for thread-sockets
acc. to DIN 2986 which have to be provided. According to DIN 19 680, point 6.31.3 threadconnections have to be used only exceptionally. Hard-soldering connections have to be carried
out in consideration of the instructions by the solder-manufacturers acc. to DIN 1988 T 2, point
3.2.1.

2. Seamless Copper Pipe

Seamless drawn copper pipe acc. to DIN 1786 DVGW, semi finished product acc. to DIN 1787.
Dimensions, measures and tolerances acc. to DIN 1754, material Cu-DHP resp. SF-Cu, No.
2.0090. Technical delivery conditions and material properties acc. to DIN EN 1057 as well as
DIN 17 671. Max axial strength of straight pipe 110 N/mm2.
Alternatively a copper pipe single or a copper pipe double, with a medium pipe each for hot
water and for circulation will be available. Usable from max. 110 C (soldering technique) up to
max. 155 C (press-technique) at permanent operating temperature, depending from connection
technology.
Other medium-pipe quality on request.

The mentioned data as well as the data mentioned on the following page R 3.3.2 are based on
an average specific thermal capacity [cm] of the water of 4.187 J/(kgK), a soil covering [H] of
0,80 m (upper edge jacket-pipe to upper edge of the terrain), a thermal conductivity of the soil
[E] of 1,2 W/(mK), an average soil temperature [TE] of 10 C as well as an average clearance
pipe distance of 150 mm in case of single pipes. For a better comparison all coefficients of the
double pipe have been determined with TVL = 70 C and TRL = 50 C.
(59) TM = (TVL + TRL) : 2 TE ; Example: (70 + 50) : 2 10 = 50 K Average temperature.

PEHD - JACKET PIPE

Polyethylene High Density (PEHD) is a
seamless extruded highly shock-resistant, and
break-proof, viscoplastic hard-polyethylene up
to -50 C. General Quality requirements acc. to
DIN 8075. Corona treated for optimal
compound with PUR-foam, acc. to EN 253.
Dimensions respectively wall thickness at least
acc. to EN 253. Test procedure of melt flow
index (MFI-Group) acc. to DIN 53 735 resp. ISO
1133. PEHD is a proved plastic-material, which
is successfully used since many years for PEjacket-pipes-systems (KMR).
Because of the resistance against nearly all chemical reactions in the soil, PEHD is excellent
suitable as jacket-pipe for direct underground installation. PEHD is mentioned as the only
material for jacket-pipes as PE-jacket-pipe-compound-system in all national and international
standards respectively guidelines.
PEHD is highly resistant against weather conditions and ultraviolet rays. Storage under direct
sunlight will be therefore possible for longer periods, however not unlimited. The same will be
the case for pipelining below a bridge or in the open.
Due to the excellent welding characteristics of PEHD a maximum of safety and quality will be
reached at the welding seams of the fittings. In case of elbow-segments these will be buttwelded by use of a butt-welding-machine. The fillet-welds of the branch-connection-piece will be
carried out by use of an extruder-welding-machine.

SPIRO - JACKET PIPE

This jacket-pipe consists of a galvanized steelfolded-spiral pipe acc. to DIN 24145 with
outside fold, and is therefore suitable for open
line constructions inside or outside of buildings.
Compared to conventional insulation of open
line pipelines the Spiro-fold-jacket-pipe offers
essential advantages.
The insulation thickness may be carried out
much smaller, due to the more favourable
thermal conductivity of the PUR-hard foam
used by isoplus (PUR = 0,0275 W/(mK)) This
will result in essential savings at the supporting
structures, because the outside diameter as
well as the weight can be reduced. According to DIN 4102 the Spiro-jacket will be classified in
A1 (not inflammable), the insulated Spiro-folded-jacket-pipe in material class B2 (normal
inflammable).
There will be differences compared to the standard-insulation thickness, in case that the pipes
have to be insulated acc. to the heat-equipment- (HeizAnlV) or/and the energy-savingsregulations (EnEV) of the German Federal Government. According to 1 the heat-equipmentregulations will be valid for heating-technical-equipment as well as for sanitary water supply
used equipment and installations with a nominal thermal output of 4 kW or more, only if they are
installed inside of buildings for permanent operation. The EnEV is also valid only in buildings.

SPIRO - JACKET PIPE

Heat Loss Comparison Open Line Pipelines
For open line pipelines other heat loss factors have to be considered compared to underground
laid PE-jacket-pipes as mentioned on pages R 2.3 and R 3.3. In order to reach the insulation
values resp. thermal conduction coefficient or k-values required acc. to the HeizAnlV and EnEV,
the corresponding insulation thickness have been determined and converted to isoplus-pipes.

At heating lines of preinsulated pipes the heat flow is passing different thermal conducting
materials: Medium pipe, insulation material and jacket-pipe. To each of these materials an
individual thermal conductivity [] has to be allocated, corresponding to its chemical-physical
characteristic. According to the valid standards and guidelines this calculation has to be made
by using an average yearly temperature [TM] of TM = 50 K between medium- and ambient
temperature.
As heat transfer coefficient [] an average value of 25 W/(mK) has to be considered,
according to VDI-Guideline 2055. For determination of the thermal flow coefficient [kFR] the
following known values of thermal conductivity [] at TM = 50 K have been used:

Medium pipe St 37.0:

Insulation acc. to HeizAnlV (1):
PUR-Insulation acc. to. isoplus:

= 52,3300

W/(mK)
W/(mK)
W/(mK)

(1)

The thermal conductivity value acc. to the HeizAnlV and EnEV, D = 0,035 W/(mK), refers
to an average temperature of TM = 20 K. At TM = 50 K of a corresponding insulation material, i.e.
mineral wool, the value D will increase to 0,037 W/(mK). In other words PUR will reduce at TM
= 20 K to 0,0225 W/(mK).
