Mixing Substances Lab!

(Liquid Matter)
5-PS1-4. Conduct an investigation to determine whether the mixing of two or
more substances results in new substances.
Question:
What will happen when two or more substances are mixed?
Hypothesis:
If I mix the following substances with water, then they will stay separate, except for the
soap, because I know from past experience that soap and water makes bubbles.
Variables
Independent: Water being mixed with chosen substances
Dependent: What happens to the substances? (Observations)
Materials:
Pencil
Science Log
Substances to Mix
Water
Soap
Cooking oil
Lemonade
Vinegar
Cups
Dropper
Procedure:
> Step by Step guidelines and procedures from the beginning of the experiment to
writing the conclusion.
Step 1. Gather all materials, and organize into stations
Step 2. Have pencil and Science Log ready
Step 3. Go to assigned station
Step 4. Pour first substance into cup of water
Step 5. Record observations
Step 6. Observe another student pour substance, repeat Step 5
Step 7. Go to next substance station
Step 8. Repeat Steps 4 and 5
Step 9. Go to next substance station
Step 10. Repeat Steps 4 and 5
Step 11. Go to final substance station

Step 12. Repeat Steps 4 and 5


Step 13. Discuss with group, begin writing conclusion
Step 14. Type up Lab and share on Weebly
