DESCRIPTION

3.

INSTALLATION

2.1 DDx filters

3.1 General remarks

The DDx filter is a general purpose protection and liquid

removal filter. The filter element retains water and oil particles,
which can be removed by the drain.

When installing the filter, keep in mind the following:

Be sure that the pipework is internally clean, especially

downstream of the filter.

The air flow is from inside to outside the filter element.

The filters must be mounted vertically.

If the unit is integrated in a multiple line system, provide

isolating valves and, if required, a by-pass.

The automatic drain has a special connection allowing easy

installation of a flexible or a quick coupling to pipe away the
drained liquid. Take care not to create a flow resistance.

2.2 DDxp and PDxp filter

The DDxp and PDxp filters are dust filters. The filter element
traps the solid particles. The PDxp filter is the same as the DDxp
filter but is more efficient.
The air flow is from outside to inside the filter element.

3.2 Specific remarks

2.3 PDx filter

3.2.1
The PDx filter is the same as the DDx filter but is more efficient. It
is a high efficiency dust, liquid and aerosol removal filter for
compressed air. The filter element traps the solid particles. The
oil/water aerosols liquefy and the so-formed drops collect and are
removed by the drain.

DDx filter

No specific remarks for the installation of the DDx filter.

3.2.2

DDxp and PDxp filter

The air flow is from inside to outside the filter element.

When the DDxp and PDxp filters are used with an adsorption type
air dryer, install the filter downstream of the dryer.

2.4 QDx filter

3.2.3

The QDx filter is an oil vapour and odour removal filter. The air
flows through the activated carbon which is contained in the QDx
filter element and which absorbs oil vapours and odours.

The filter must be mounted as close as possible to the point of use

of the air.

This filter does not remove methane, carbone

monoxide, carbon dioxide or other toxic gases and
fumes.

PDx filter

It is recommended to install a DDx filter upstream the PDx filter. If

not, the load on the PDx filter element may become too high and
will reduce its lifetime.
3.2.4

QDx filter

2.5 Difference between DDx/PDx and DDxp/PDxp

To protect the active carbon element, the QDx filter must always
be preceded by a PDx filter.

The difference between the DDx/PDx and the DDxp/PDxp filters

is the air flow.

The filter should be mounted as close as possible to the point of

use of the air.

In case of DDx or PDx filters, the air flows from inside the filter
element to outside the filter element.
In case of DDxp or PDxp filters, the air flows from outside the filter
element to inside the filter element.

3.3 Options

3.4 ISO 8573-1 norm

If two or more filters are used in combination, build the filter

heads together by means of a serial connection in the correct
air flow direction and DDx upstream of PDx. An arrow for the
air flow direction is provided on the filter head.

For wall mounting, a special set is available as option. Fit the

mounting bracets with bolts, washers and nuts to a solid
frame within easy reach, leaving sufficient space underneath
for maintenance and service.

For new installations as well as for installations that have to be

made up-to-date, the ISO 8573-1 norm can be used. This norm
describes several quality classes and, depending on these
classes and applications, some proposals are given fulfilling this
norm.

Quick couplings are available to make an easy connection of

the automatic drain valve possible.

All DDx, DDxp, PDx and PDxp filters can be provided with a
differential pressure indicator, a differential pressure gauge or
a voltage free contact switch.

The ISO 8573-1 norm only concerns Compressed

air for general use and does not deal with, or is not
applicable to, e.g. breathing air.

3.3.1

Dual Pressure Transmitter

Option on the DDx, DDxp, PDx and PDxp filters (refer to figure 4).
The dual pressure transmitter of Atlas Copco is designed to monitor gauge pressure and differential pressure over a DDx, DDxp,
PDx or PDxp filter. For each channel, pressure and pressure drop,
a 4 to 20 mA signal is provided.
The dual pressure transmitter is mounted between the filter head
and the differential pressure gauge. It needs a 12 to 24 VDC input
voltage and generates 2 signals: one signal proportional with the
pressure drop over the filter and one signal proportional with the
gauge input pressure. These 4 to 20 mA signals can be used as
input on the Compressor Room Control (CRC box) or on a computer with an analogue input converter (to RS232 or RS485 protocol) to monitor and log the behaviour of the filter.
3.3.2

Electronic Drain EWD 50L

Option on the DDx and PDx filters (refer to figure 5).

The electronic drain EWD 50L is a zero-loss, electronically operated drain valve, specially designed to drain oil condensate. A sensor senses the condensate level. If this level exceeds a preset
value, the drain waits for a fixed-programmed time, then a solenoid valve is activated and the condensate is discharged. When
all the condensate is discharged, the solenoid valve closes and
condensate is collected again. This way, the loss of air is reduced
to a minimum.

The air quality to ISO 8573-1 is expressed as follows: class X.Y.Z,

where X, Y and Z are respectively the quality classes with regard
to dirt, water and oil.
A few examples are given in Fig. 1:
A ......... General purpose protection
(air quality to ISO 8573-1: class 2.-.2)
B ......... High-quality air with reduced dewpoint
(air quality to ISO 8573-1: class 1.4.1)
C......... General purpose protection and reduced oil concentration
(air quality to ISO 8573-1: class 1.-.1)
D......... High quality air with extremely low dewpoint
(air quality to ISO 8573-1: class 1.2.1)

The components shown in Fig. 1 are:

1 .... Compressor with aftercooler

If the microcontroller registers a malfunction, the automatic drain

valve will automatically change to alarm mode. This alarm signal
can be relayed via a potential-free contact.
The EWD 50L has three operating voltages: 220V, 115V and 24V.
An extra electric wiring can be foreseen to connect the potential
free contacts and an external test button.
Remove the manual or automatic drain of the filter before installing the EWD 50L.

MAINTENANCE

5.

FILTER ELEMENT CHANGE

When maintaining the filter, keep in mind the following:

On filters with manual drain valve, open the latter at regular

intervals to evacuate collected dust or liquid.

For DDx, DDxp, PDx and PDxp filters, change the filter
element yearly or when the pressure drop reaches approx.
0.45 bar.

In case an automatic drain valve is installed, manual draining

can be carried out by turning the connection nipple of the
automatic drain valve counterclockwise. Open at regular
intervals to check if the drain valve still works properly.

For QDx filters, the change interval of the adsorption element

is approx. 750 operating hours or yearly. Its pressure drop will
not increase during its useful life. Nevertheless, the
adsorption element must be changed earlier at the first signs
of oil vapour and odour.
When the filter has to process air with a temperature
higher than the maximum temperature, the filters
lifetime will reduce considerably.

5.1 Procedure
A small amount of acid-free vaseline may be applied
to screw threads and O-rings to facilitate the
assembly.

Refer to Fig. 2. The

in a new filter kit.

on the figure indicates the items provided

1.

Isolate the filter from the air net.

2.

Depressurize the filter by turning the connection nipple of the

automatic drain valve counterclockwise or by opening the
manual drain valve.

3.

Unscrew the bowl. A whistling noise will warn you if the bowl
is not fully depressurized. If this occurs, the bowl should be
screwed back and the venting should be repeated.

4.

Discard the filter element.

5.

Remove the drain valve by unscrewing the retaining nut

underneath the bowl.

6.

Remove the O-ring from the bowl and clean the bowl.
Position a new O-ring on the bowl.

7.

Remove the O-ring from the drain valve and position a new
O-ring on the drain valve. The latter is supplied with each
new filter kit.

8.

Reinstall the drain valve in the bowl using the retaining nut.

9.

Reposition the new filter element with the 2 new O-rings.

10. Screw the bowl completely on the head.

5.2 Service intervals

The following service intervals should be observed:

For units operating less than 4.000 hours per year: 12

months.

For units operating 8.000 hours per year: 12 months.

What sets Atlas Copco apart as a company is our

conviction that we can only excel in what we do if we
provide the best possible know-how and technology to
really help our customers produce, grow and succeed.

There is a unique way of achieving that - we simply call

it the Atlas Copco way. It builds on interaction, on longterm relationships and involvement in the customers'
process, needs and objectives. It means having the
flexibility to adapt to the diverse demands of the people we
cater for.

It's the commitment to our customers' business that

drives our effort towards increasing their productivity
through better solutions. It starts with fully supporting
existing products and continuously doing things better, but
it goes much further, creating advances in technology
through innovation. Not for the sake of technology, but for
the sake of our customer's bottom line and peace-of-mind.

That is how Atlas Copco will strive to remain the first

choice, to succeed in attracting new business and to

No. 2904 0183 00/ DC 2004.05

maintain our position as the industry leader.
