A hallmark of human nature is the ability to share

other primates. However, before infants have

Scientists refer to this skill as joint attention.

In most cases what other think or their

Defense formed the primary purpose of the castle.

ancient times. They included machines for hurling
heavy stones and iron bolts, battering rams, and
movable towers, from which the besiegers crossed
over to the walls. Such engines could best be used

REVIEW TEST 30

By 2050, the world will host nine billion people - and

that's if population growth slows in much of the
developing world. Today, at least one billion people are
chronically malnourished or starving. Simply to maintain
that sad state of affairs would require the clearing of 900
million additional hectares of land. The bad news
beyond the impacts on people, plants and animals of
that kind of deforestation is that there isn't that much
land available. At most, we might be able to add 100
million hectares to the 4.3 billion already under
cultivation worldwide. In addition, agriculture accounts
for at least 85 percent of human water consumption - a
growing concern as aquifers diminish and hydrology
changes in the face of climate change. And, humans
now use some 171 million tons of nitrogen as fertilizer
every year, much of which ends up polluting lakes,
rivers, streams and even the ocean. And it's not like socalled organic agriculture is helping with that: Nitrate
leaching into waterways can come from manure, as in
the Netherlands or overuse of fertilizer, as in Iowa. The
result is the same: dead zones.

38. We can infer from the passage that ---A) 100 million hectares of land are added to
the agricultural cultivation each year
B) the amount of arable lands may not be
sufficient for future generations
C) population growth and deforestation are
slightly related
D) lakes and rivers are the least effected
water resources from industrial fertilization
E) the world has reached to a point where it
can no more feed its inhabitants anymore

39. It is made clear in that passage that

malnutrition and starvation ---

36. In the passage it is said that agriculture --A) is in severe need of water which could not
be met by farmers
B) is the only way that we can feed the
growing population of the earth

A) may become concerns of the coming

decades unless we develop more food to
feed people
B) has never become so critical throughout
the dawn of man

C) poses significant impacts on ecology by

exploiting fresh water resources

C) are to be blamed for the overuse fertilizers

and other industrial chemicals in
agriculture

D) has nothing to do with the use of fertilizers

and thus should proceed as it is

D) are the natural outcomes of agricultural

areas known as the dead zones

E) has to be industrialized in order to fertilize

land and increase crop yields

E) are likely to add up in the coming decades

due to the scarcity of arable lands

37. We understand from the paragraph that the

writer ----A) calls for more reliable agricultural methods
instead of the ones that are applied
B) acknowledges the fact that we are
exploiting resources on earth, but
appreciates it as inevitable
C) mainly centers on how to tackle with the
annually growing population
D) points out that nitrate use in agriculture be
ceased as soon as possible
E) believes that available land for cultivation
has its limits

REVIEW TEST 30

We all have heard quite a lot people claiming that our

language is in danger and text messaging as well as
social networks are destroying the mother tongue weve
enjoyed for generations. Before long, nobody will be
able to speak or spell properly and nobody seems to
care or so frustrated columnists and concerned
technophobes tell us. Yet recent studies suggest that, if
anything, the opposite is true, and all these new forms of
communication are actually improving our language
skills. Surely language has always been continually
evolving since it first evolved all those years ago and
that is exactly what is happening now. In fact, when and
why people first begin to speak is a puzzle that has
engaged some of the best brains, from linguists to
evolutionary biologists, geneticists to anthropologists,
yet we still dont have an answer. Think how much we
know about the first few microseconds of the Universe,
says University of Edinburghs Simon Kirby. Yet we
know almost nothing about how we came to have our
most defining characteristic. Its kind of embarrassing
how little we understand what marks our species out.
Unlike other aspects of human evolution where we have
fossil evidence, it is difficult to know with any certainty
how language began.

40.

41.

According to the passage, the origins of human

language ---A)

has been an academic challenge that even

experts are trying to discover

B)

could somehow be related with the origins of the

universe

C)

made so much appeal in academic circles that

almost all linguists are challenging one another
to find out a proper answer

D)

is impossible to study on in that there are not

traces left by our ancestors

E)

would certainly shed light on what developments

we may face with the evolution of our language

42.

43.

As far as the writer is concerned, the evolution of

language ---A)

is as puzzling as understanding how the

universe came into being

B)

is a matter of academic study only which experts

such as evolutionary biologists and geneticists
should deal with

C)

comes innumerous varieties none of which have

superiority over the other

D)

is a natural outcome that has contributive effects

on the language

E)

is not as hard to conceive of as it is generally

assumed

As we learn from the passage the mainstream belief

over language is that ----A)

social networks and text-messaging are two

factors that help our langue evolve further

B)

we know nothing about how our language has

evolved through time

C)

developments and changes in languages are just

a normal process that they undergo

D)

there are threats to our mother tongue that

derive from recent technological advances in
communication

E)

a more conservative approach should be

adopted when it comes to protecting our mother
tongue

The irony implied in the passage is that ---A)

the langue used on social networks pose serious

hazards for our mother tongues

B)

though we know how the universe originated, we

have no concrete information about the that of
the language

C)

language is progressively going though changes

that are no always to keep up with

D)

our understanding of the formation of language

has not evolved with recent trends

E)

studying languages is not as easy as it is usually

thought
