Based at Camposol, Welcome was started

to help people moving into Camposol
and surrounding district make and meet
new friends and to enable old friends
to socialise. This was done by holding
monthly dances, normally, at Marianos
restaurant on Sector A, Camposol. The
monthly meetings, usually held on the
1st Saturday of the month, are also held
there. There is no membership required and
everybody is welcome. Tickets for all dances
can be bought or reserved at the meetings,
by telephone or email. These tickets pay for
a regular disco and usually 2 live acts at the
monthly dances. Tables can be reserved, so
groups can sit together, but if you are alone
or a small group, round tables are used so
that you have a chance to mix and make
new friends. There is a smart dress code
for indoor dances eg long trousers, shirts
with collars, (no jeans, vests or shorts). No
admittance for under 16s.

Have You Recently Inherited Or Been

Donated An Asset In Spain?
If this is the case, you could apply for a
refund of the Inheritance/Donation Tax
you previously paid to the Tax Office.

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

When you receive an asset by inheritance

or donation in Spain you have to pay
Inheritance Tax. This tax is progressive.
The higher the valuation of the asset you
receive, the greater the tax amount you
will have to pay. However, the regulation
sets out several options in which you can
reduce this amount. For example there is
a reduction for relatives of the person who
leaves the assets.

All our meetings are funded by donations

given during the evening. Our early healing
sessions start at 6pm.

less than 4 years ago in Spain, you, the

deceased or the giver were not fiscal
residents in our country, it is more than
likely that you paid a higher tax than
residents in Spain. This means that you
have the opportunity to claim from the
Tax Office, the tax paid plus interest if
you can prove that you paid a higher rate
of tax just because you were not a Fiscal
Resident in Spain.

Non-Residents in Spain as they were

paying higher taxes and not forgetting
they were Fiscal Residents in the European
Union.

Keep calm; this is our job and we can

deal with this matter on your behalf.

What is the problem?

Because this tax has not always been the
same for residents and non-residents, the
non-residents have been the victims of
the old regulation. Fortunately now the
situation has changed.

How can we claim this tax refund?

This claim is based on the previously set
law, which states that if you are not a Fiscal
Resident in Spain you have to pay the
taxes according to the national law, while
the Fiscal Residents follow the autonomous
community rules (self-employed), with
more deductions and benefits than the
national one.

If you paid the Inheritance/Donation Tax

This situation was extremely unfair for

For this reason, the Court of Justice of the

European Union changed this law. Since
the 1st of January 2015, everyone who
resides in the European Union will be able
to access the same benefits and deductions
as Spanish citizens.
For example, in
some Autonomous Communities the
deduction could be as much as 99%, but
Non-Residents could not claim the same
benefits because they had to follow the
national law, which was more restrictive.
It is important to bear in mind that
each Autonomous Community acts
upon its own regulation in this matter,
so the rules and deductions could be
completely different between them.
It is necessary to check each and every
particular case in order to find out if it is
possible to make a claim or not.
The deadline to make a claim is four years
since you paid the Inheritance/Donation
Tax. After this date the period to appeal
expires and you cannot make a claim for a
refund. Dont miss your opportunity to
make a claim.
Corral Alcaraz are expert lawyers,
familiar in dealing with these matters. If
you find yourself in this situation and you
would like us to check your will for you,
please contact us and we will happily do
so.
If you need more information on this matter,
please call and make an appointment
to see us, so we can confirm if you are
entitled to claim a refund of this tax.
To protect your interests, it is fundamental
that you seek professional, legal advice
and always make sure you deal with
certified lawyers who are members of the
BAR. Corral & Alcaraz Law Firm will be
more than pleased to assist you.

Lioness from Travel With a Heart by Mike Edmans

We climbed a rock-covered kopje to the top ledges.

We arrived by an old grey 304 Peugeot pickup truck,

Three of us sat in the back under the star-sprinkled sky,
Blacked up like natives, clothes unwashed and smoked like
kippers,
Tossed and bounced down the dusty, stony road from Bindura,
Into the Zambezi Valley, where crickets sang and nightjars
called.
Boiling hot by day, could be so cold at night,
Where buffalo roam, elephant and sable graze,
Beside the hunter, lion or leopard, alongside the occasional
human.

Stealing away amongst the nooks and crannies,

Camo net draped from thorn bushes and trees,
With our Zeiss binoculars, we would take turns
To watch the kraal about half a kilometre away.
The daily comings and goings we observed and duly noted.
We could hear what sounded like a cat purring with
contentment, as the watching began.
When five metres below, a large lioness appeared,
Followed by four half-blind, speckled bundles.

Around three oclock, the truck came to rest, for us to decamp.

An eagle owl grunted, annoyed.
An hour or so, we walked through the msasa forest.
Elephant grass catches on our threadbare trousers.
In the half-light, just before dawn, our objective loomed out at
us,
The sounds of the night mixing with distant cockerels, crowing.
The stars above started to fade with the oncoming dawn.

World Heart Day was created in 2000

to inform people around the world about
heart disease and is part of an International
Campaign to spread awareness about
heart disease and stroke prevention. This
is the perfect day to quit smoking, start
exercising and eating healthily.

She laid down on plate-like rock,

As the cubs fed in an uncomplaining fashion,
Constrantly watching, cleaning and cherishing her brood.
The Zambezi sun burnt away any evidence of the night.
Vultures circled lazily on the warming morning thermals in the
distance.
Twenty minutes they fed, after which she bedded them down.
Not long after, the lioness left, leaving bundles of joy.
Down the rocks she nimbly went.

lives and those of our loved ones.

The aim of World Heart Day is to improve
health globally by encouraging people to
make lifestyle changes and promoting
education internationally about ways to
be good to your heart. This is becoming
increasingly important as reports of
obesity, poor diet and physical inactivity in
children and young people become more
common.
Events take place around the world to
recognise World Heart Day with charities
and other organisations coordinating walks
and runs, health checks, public talks,
shows and exhibitions.

Heart disease and strokes are the worlds

leading causing of death killing 17.1 million
people every year.
Over eating, lack of exercise, unhealthy
diets and high blood pressure, cholesterol
and glucose levels are all factors which can

The 8 Week Walking Challenge aims to

encourage people to increase their physical
activity as a sustained lifestyle change, not
just a one-off event. By challenging people
to walk as part of a group for 150 minutes
per a week for at least 8 weeks, they aim
to encourage ongoing, regular physical
activity, which can dramatically lower an
individuals risk of cardiovascular disease
(CVD). Regular exercise is also proven

to improve mental health and to lower

the risk of obesity-related diseases. The
Challenge will:
Encourage individuals to do 150 minutes
per week of physical activity for at least 8
weeks
Support people to enjoy walking and
walk as part of a group.
Create a movement for movement that
will result in sustained behaviour change
by allowing individuals to measure how
much they walk
Demonstrate positive changes to heart
health by increasing physical activity
levels, a risk factor for cardiovascular
disease.
The 8 Week Walking Challenge initially
aims to involve over 10,000 people across
five trailblazing countries and is also being
championed by targeted international
organizations as the challenge is a great
free and fun employee engagement and
health and wellbeing campaign.
Get involved on World Heart Day eat

will feel the benefit.

Farewell Friends and Some Last Ideas

For Your Gardens by Dick Handscombe
Dear Readers and all the Murcia gardeners
that I have met at various talks, this will
be last contribution to the fantastic Costa
Clida Chronicle magazine; for very good
reasons.

their main distributors closed down a few

years ago as a result of the economic
crisis and internet stores like Amazon
Books and The Book Depository no longer
always have residual new copies or second
hand copies available. However copies of
the newer booklet-like books published
via the Amazon self-publishing subsidiary
Create Space continue to be available from
Amazon Books and a good number of other
internet bookshops.

Nearing my 80th birthday and having

written almost 2,000 gardening articles
over 18 years for various publications in
Spain and the UK, I have decided to stop
writing for all publications as from the
first week of September in order to give
more time to other activities in my later
active years and as the presentation of the
website www.garden.com is getting a
little outdated, this will close down as well.
However, a search for Dick Handscombe
on the internet will uncover an Aladdins
Cave of past writings.
I hope that the CCC articles, whether
focussed on possible gardening design
strategies, day to day maintenance, solving
basic day-to-day problems, or what to do
if a major crisis occurs were of help when
you first started a garden here in Spain,
or later as you gained experience, but still
had things to learn about the challenges of
gardening along the Costas and in inland
valleys of Murcia. There are some great
challenges but I sure that Murcia looks a
better place from the air as a result of all
your efforts.
Unfortunately my four original books,
written with Clodagh, are no longer
generally available as our publisher and

of gardens and finishes with a plant list of

some useful drought resistant plants.
The great thing about gardening as a
hobby is that there is always something
new to try out. One plant I should now
add to the aforementioned plant list is the
Siberian succulent Rhodiola Rosea which
has helped Russian athletes gain Olympic
gold medals legitimately and now helps
me improve my retirement strength and
stamina. Interestingly I purchased the
seeds from the USA, but they arrived
by post from China! Come the autumn I
will try to germinate them and then grow
on in the coolest spot in the garden.
On my 80th birthday I will have had a
personal garden for 75 years. The first
in 1942 was started on the pile of earth
created when an unexploded bomb was
dug out of our west London garden and
todays garden has corners and plants
stimulated, not just from earlier gardens
in England and Holland plus those seen
in Spain, but also by world travels when
working and on exotic walking holidays.
Remember that great gardens dont
start in garden centres! They start with
creative pre-planning and the consideration
of a number of options that could enhance
the challenging plot of land you decided to
purchase.
Today Spanish garden temperatures reach
36C in the shade and nearly 50C in the
full sun. The humidity is low - below 50,
but that could well change by this time
tomorrow as some much-needed rain is
forecast for early evening. If it comes it
will feel as if I live in a tropical rain forest
with its multi-layered collection of plants
and growing conditions.
Since most expat gardens suffer from
insufficient shade, it is worth thinking
about the layers that can exist and the
benefits with reference to the south facing
part of my own garden.

How To Use Less Water In The

Garden is a brain dumping book of all the
things that I have used or seen on travels
to reduce the water required to maintain
an interesting garden. It starts by looking
at the varying water-needs of thirty types

This southern half of the garden survives

the without a watering system or excessive
hosepipe watering due largely to the
layering effect of the various layers of
plants and years of natural mulching
as happens in a tropical jungle. The
high trees create a canopy-effect with

shade to protect shorter planted and
self-germinated trees and stimulate the
self-germination of dwarf bird dropped
trees and shrubs. As in Costa Rica jungle
parks, birds roost and flowering climbers
begonias, cape honey suckle and bower
vine brighten up the upper reaches and
help hide the neighbouring house.

A mature but still changing garden

At lower height and a little in front are
smaller shade trees that extend the hedge
shade forward and in places densify the
upper dappled shade. This helps build up
a floor of rotting leaves to self-fertilise the
soil; a natural mulch to retain moisture
and prevent weeds from growing. These
shorter trees include tila, ginkgo biloba,
bay, bottle brush, justicia, Jupiter, judas
and bird of paradise trees.
Then forward of the mini-forest, stretching
to the house, are medium-height shrubs
such as orange and lemon, a collection of
sages, passion flowers growing through
the old almond tree, hibiscus, buddleia,
echiums, agapanthus and society garlics.

In the centre, a lavender bed surrounds

the well head fountain and pond, the latter
with a mass of summer flowering water
lilies sheltering a shoal of fish, a family of
frogs and toads regularly hatching, bright
red damsel flies and silvery blue dragon
flies. Shorty the lavender with be cut and
distilled for oil. Unseen in the photograph
is a 28 metre long rockery on the face
and top of a centuries old monastery built
dry stone terrace. This is largely planted
with ground cover succulents and ground
cover rosemary and sages through which
rhizomes arise and flower in the spring
from a shallow root layer dampened by
spring showers.
Well my last gardening words are now
recorded and about to be sent off to Patti
who does a wonderful job in compiling
each monthly edition of the Costa Clida
Chronicle and I can go out an hour before
going for a mindfulness hour long stroll
beyond the garden to see the sunset
knowing that there are no more writing
deadlines awaiting my return. A relaxing
sundowner will be then enjoyed! Cheers to
your ongoing gardening efforts, including
Patti who has been working hard on a new
garden during the past year.

Costa Clida Chronicle - September 2016

Part 1 To Christian Times

There has long been human settlement in
the area around the City of Murcia. In
the first Millennium BC, a native Iberian
presence existed and a remarkable temple
to a local god has been found and excavated
immediately adjacent to the La Luz Visitors
and Interpretation Centre in the El Valle hills to
the south east of the city. Artifacts, including
metal figurines, have been found in the area.
Under the Romans, very little of significance
to the present city area of Murcia seems to
have happened. Likewise, as direct Roman
power declined and Spain was invaded by
tribes from the north, including the Visigoths,
not much appears to have changed insofar as
the future city
y of Murcia is concerned.

pacify the area. To ensure that the new peace

lasted, the Emir, Abd al-Rahman II, caused a
new capital to be established on the site of
the City of Murcia on Sunday 25th June 825.
Progress, nevertheless, was still slow and
instability never far away. It is said that, only
with the accession of Abd al-Rahman III in
929, did a period of stability and prosperity
ensue. By the end of the 10th Century, the
population of Tudmir is believed to have
consisted largely of Hispanomuslims, with
little left by which to remember the preMoorish invasion civilizations. By now, as
well, farms were beginning to appear in the
huerta (irrigated and cultivated area around
the city), although the network of irrigation
canals which was to become such a feature of
the area, is no earlier than the 11th Century.
There is a dam, La Contraparada, thirteen
kilometres northwest of the city, at a natural
narrowing in the River Segura, which allowed
the collection of water and its distribution
by two main acequias (canals) Aljufa
and Alquibla forming the most extensive
irrigation network of its era in Spain.

Thus, we arrive at the beginning of the

Moors invasion in 711.
The area of Tudmir, by which the region
became known at this time, was undoubtedly
very lightly populated and was, of course,
some distance from the Moors capital of
Cordoba, but change was gradually afoot.
Throughout the years after the Moors arrival,
groups of people of Arab origin began slowly
to settle, whether from Egypt, Syria or North
Africa. With numerous different tribes and
groups settling in the area, territorial disputes
were inevitable and these flared up in the
early 9th Century. It was at this point, that
an armed force was sent out from Cordoba to

24

www.costacalidachronicle.com

At this time, Murcia remained part of the

Caliphate of Cordoba which finally broke up
into separate kingdoms, taifas, or emirates,
in 1031 giving an impetus to the local
aristocracies to seize control and it was
now in the mid-11th Century that the first
independent Murcian State took shape. It
did not last for long. Instability returned,

augmented by a Christian advance on alAndalus which actually saw them take and
occupy Aledo for several years. A very few
years later, another North African group,
the Almoravids, were brought in and quickly
restored order, with Murcia becoming just a
province of their Empire.

Rivalries soon arose again within and

between the Arab groups. There was also
increasing pressure from the Christians in
the north. Indeed, it was in alliance with the
Christians, that the Governor of Valencia, Ibn
Mardannis, seized power in 1147, expelling
also the Almoravids and initiated one of
the most brilliant periods in Murcia Citys
history. It was probably at this time that the
city was strongly walled, that the fortified
palace-castle of Monteagudo was built nearby
and other fortifications around the huerta
were constructed. It is said that Murcia
was the effective capital of al-Andalus and
attracted a large population; perhaps 28,000
inhabitants at this time.
Intellectuals were resident in Murcia,
such as the mystic Ibn Arab, regarded
as one of the most influential Islamic
philosophers, who travelled widely
throughout the Middle East, dying in
Damascus in 1240, where his tomb is
still the site of pilgrimages.
During the time of Ibn Mardannis reign,

exports of fabric, ceramics and metalwork
were sent from Murcia throughout the
Mediterranean. To preserve his position, he
even reached agreement with neighbouring
Christian Kings and raised a mercenary army
from their lands to resist another wave of
invaders from North Africa.

It was during the time of Arab rule that

silk and silkworm cultivation originated
in Murcia. From the 11th to the 13th Centuries
it is said that there are references to alguaxi, a type of material derived from silk,
which was widely exported to North Africa
and the East. It is suggested that it would
probably also have found its way to Europe
through merchants from Genoa, Sicily and
Pisa who were known to live in the Arrixaca
district of Murcia City at the beginning of the
13th Century.

widespread uprising against the Castilians in

1264. The now King Alfonso X, even had to
ask his father-in-law, King Jaim I of Aragon,
for assistance in putting this rebellion down.
It was the latter who entered the city in early
1266 after a new treaty with the Moors.
However, the main mosque was consecrated
as a church contrary to the treaty of ten days
previously, and many of Murcias Moorish
inhabitants who were now restricted to a
defined part of the city, decided to go south
to Granada. Even then, those who left, under
the Kings protection, did not fare well the
men were slaughtered at Hurcal and the
women and children taken into captivity.

After Ibn Mardannis, things again

deteriorated but there was still time for
one more short period of splendour for
Moorish Murcia before the arrival of the

An individual by the name of Ibn Hud,

attracted various dissidents and began to take
power over an increasing area. He entered
the City of Murcia on 4th August 1228 and
by the following year controlled a large area
of Southern Spain, excluding only the city of
Valencia and a few places around Gibraltar.
Murcia flourished, though the inhabitants
paid huge taxes to finance the war efforts and
by the time Ibn Hud was assassinated by one
of his own officials in Almeria in 1238, the
situation was very unstable and insecure.

It was, then, perhaps not entirely

surprising when the Emir of Murcia sent
envoys to Toledo to negotiate a treaty
with the Christian Prince Alfonso with
the Treaty of Alcaraz resulting in April
1243.
In exchange for certain assurances and
military rights, the Castilians permitted the
Moors to retain their properties and social
systems. Don Alfonso entered the City of
Murcia on 1st May 1243. This situation,
however, was unsustainable and there was a

Costa Clida Chronicle - September 2016

Part II
On Wednesday both boats left Portinatx;
Ganty for San Antonio; us on Lotti for Cala
San Vincente. We had a great sail downwind
jibing at up to 7 knots to Punta Grossa
where the wind veered and increased, so
we checked the forecast and decided to
continue on the Cala Boix, a safer anchorage
in the forecast conditions.
As we passed between the island of
Tagomago and Ibiza the wind died so we
continued to Santa Eulalia to anchor in
the bay - 15.5 miles in 3.5 hours, half of
yesterdays time for the same distance.
Another great days sail. Strong winds
overnight forced a move at 2am to get clear
of other moored boats which were coming
very close as they swung.

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

Thursday we spent at anchor while we

repaired the dinghy, the glue joints holding
the transom to the tubes having failed
during yesterdays journey. We heard that
Baltic Moon was still in Marina Botifach
with continuing battery problems and Ganty
stayed in San Antonio. Gemini J and Berti
had a sail to Porroig where they picked up
a buoy to ride out the high overnight winds
which did not materialise.

Friday Lotti re-fuelled in Santa Eulalia

then had a gently sail to Cala Porjoles on

26

Formentera. Moon sailed back to San

Antonio and Gemini J and Berti to Cala
Saona. We had not been able to raise Ganty
all day, then at 5pm they telephoned to say
they had crossed back early because of the
forecast and were in Calpe.
Saturday Gemini J and Berti left for the
mainland and encountered the very strong
winds and up to 4 metre swell that Ganty
had wanted to avoid. Deciding to motor,
Gemini J tried to furl the Genoa to find
it stuck. Investigation, crawling up to the
bow on the heaving deck, found the furling
line wrapped round the drum. It took half
an hour to completely undo and re-thread
while the sail banged and crashed in front of
the boat, by which time they were way off
course, but eventually reached Calpe with
the cabin looking like a jumble sale and a
shattered but relieved crew.
We
later
heard
that
Ganty
had
sailed from
Calpe
to
To r r e v i e j a
in the same
conditions,
downwind
surfing at up
to 8 knots
with just a
storm
jib
set. Moon stayed in San Antonio while
we on Lotti had a great sail in the 15-23
knot winds back to Porroig for the night,
anchoring next to the large power cruiser
that had been there a week ago. Late in the
evening a charter yacht came and anchored
between us, too close for comfort if we
swung during the night, so every couple of
hours, when nature called due to the beers
consumed, we popped our head out of the
hatch to check all was well.

At 7am two of us awoke to a beautiful

Sunday morning. The sea was like a mirror
in Porroig Bay and the charter boat was
positioned about 6 inches from the stern of
the power boat; a clear example of the need
to be aware of a boats swinging circle when
anchoring. We expected lots of screaming
and shouting half an hour later when we
saw movement on the two boats, but the
power cruiser had a professional crew and
they politely spoke to the charter crew who
were busy preparing their breakfast as
though oblivious to the situation. The cruiser
had to move as they had swung over the
charters anchor so we took the opportunity
to go before we were compromised. Our
other two crew were brutally awoken by
the gentle (I wished) clanking of the anchor
chain as it was raised.
After a gentle sail downwind under Genoa
alone we anchored in Cala Saona planning
an overnight stay and an early start back
to the mainland. Unfortunately the forecast
proved inaccurate and, during lunch, an
onshore wind and big swell started to build,
forcing the decision to leave at 3.15pm
direct to our home port of San Pedro.

At 8pm Sunday night the wind died so we

motor sailed. It was the night of the full
strawberry moon of the Summer Solstice
which rose about one hour before sunset, so
we had the full moon to the east and a red
sunset sky to the west; absolutely beautiful.
We arrived in San Pedro after 122 miles and
23 hours to see Berti entering the marina
as we approached. They and Gemini J had
sailed from Calpe to Santa Pola on Sunday
and then from there to San Pedro on Monday.
Bertis crew left for home immediately, but
those on Gemini J and Lotti stayed on to
clean their boats, finally meeting up for a
well-earned beer at 6pm. We heard that
Moon was in Morayra and staying for a rest
after a heavy crossing during Sunday.
Everybody came back safe and sound after
a fabulous two weeks. Roll on 2017!

We have had a great time at Forget Me

We would not have been able to offer this if
it wasnt for our volunteers and, with this in

our weed-busters are working their way

The volunteers have been pruning the

and those planted near your casa by our

many you wish!) planted either along the
roads or near the different features and let
us know. Just tie a ribbon or tape on it to
designate it as yours. Total responsibility

Rubbish Disposal on Camposol - Part 2

Fly-Tipping
A denition of y-tipping is the illegal
dumping of waste onto land that does not
have an environmental permit. It includes
but is not limited to, general household
waste, white goods, mattresses, garden
refuse and commercial waste such as
builders rubble, clinical waste and tyres.

Dump sites also serve as magnets for additional dumping and other criminal activities.
Dumpsites are a re hazard particularly in
the hot summer weather. They can sometimes heat up as a result of the decomposition process and spontaneously combust. Broken glass either in dry grass in
the campo or on dumped garden waste or
furniture may also catch re. Many devastating res in parts of Spain have begun
this way.

Ecoparque or left adjacent to your closest
Garden Waste Skip or phone the Mobile
Collection service on 968 333 294 to arrange collection.

Illegal dumping is a persistent problem

that costs money and creates a bad impression of the area; aesthetic value of the
local community is diminished, often resulting in reduced property prices and loss
of community pride.

The West End show The Jersey Boys is

having enormous success and those who
have seen it are not surprised. The Four
Seasons music is vibrant, catchy and
never seems dated. The Harlequin Rock

a while now; dancing onto the stage, then
singing it later on in the performance, so
the idea of a Jersey Boys compilation to

came to me so easily. She had obviously

had her puppies, but she was full of ticks
and fleas and so so thin, but after much
searching there was no sign of her puppies.
We took her home bathed and treated her
for the usual ailments and gave her some
food. She was still agitated so at midnight
we went to look for her babies. She took
us to her puppies that were buried in the
undergrowth. We were amazed these 2
little boys were still alive. The next morning
we had another look with Momma. A local
said he saw them being dumped from a
van and he thought there were 3 puppies.
We searched again and about an hour later
we heard a pathetic cry. We couldnt get
in, but Momma could and out trotted her
third baby! Emotional or what!! They have
all been checked out by the vet and are
fine albeit very small, about 6 weeks old
and adorable. Momma is fine too though a
little anaemic and undernourished but that
can be fixed.

I felt this story was worth telling, as I love

The months of hard work paid off on 16th July
when we appeared at the summer fte in
Los Palacios, Camposol. Our Four Seasons
tribute was enjoyed by all; as much as the
Queen one we have been performing for
over a year. The fte had been going on all
day with stalls and activities enjoyed by all
and The Harlequin Rock Choir came on
in the evening to a rather large audience
ready for some entertainment after a funpacked day. We were also pleased to help
Los Palacios Gardening and Community

It must be said that, as a Rock Choir, we

can vary our repertoire, choosing ballads
as well as more upbeat music. It is what
drew me to join The Harlequin Rock

I much prefer to sing modern ballads
and catchy tunes. I love watching our
audiences jigging along when we perform!
If you feel as I do, join our choir.
After a summer break we start back on
September 3rd. If you would like to try

How Do Spanish Police Tell You They

Want You To Stop Your Vehicle?
On their official YouTube channel, the Guardia
Civil have published a video explaining the
actions that patrols will take in order to stop
a vehicle on the roadside. We have translated
that video into English for you. This is vital
information that everybody should know so
please share it amongst your friends.

must take the same precautions every single

time. Complacency can lead to a heightened
risk and travelling over the same route day
in, day out, can lull us into a false sense of
security.
Here are some of the hazards we might meet
when we are out for a regular drive and what
we can do to reduce the risk in the event of
coming across them.

reduced in these areas.

Below is the transcript of the video to help

you.

Pedestrian Crossings
When approaching a pedestrian crossing
you must look to both sides to see if there
is anybody waiting to cross. You must slow
down on approach and stop to give way and
allow pedestrians to cross. Be conscious of
anything that might be blocking a clear view of
the crossing and the pedestrians view of the
road, such as parked cars. Adjust your speed
appropriately. Remember, if the pavement or
road is wet or icy, you need more time to slow
down.

Amongst their duties, the Guardia Civil is

tasked with controlling road traffic to ensure
road safety and to prevent the commission
of offences which endanger road users, and
provide assistance if necessary.

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

When an official vehicle wants you to stop, it

will display a flashing red light in addition to
the blue lights. This red light means you must
stop your vehicle by manoeuvring to the right
hand side of the road.
You must stop your vehicle in a place where
it doesnt cause an increased risk to other
road users. If this is not possible, you must
continue until you can stop in a safe place.

Children and Young People

It is important to pay close attention to
children and young road users as they may
have no real awareness of the dangers of
the road and might cross without taking any
precautions.

The patrol will stop their vehicle behind yours.

All the occupants of your vehicle must remain
inside the vehicle. The officer will approach
you on the right side of your vehicle to notify
the reason for stopping you.

2. You must stop the vehicle in a safe

area.
3. When stopping, no-one should leave
the vehicle.
4. When you are finished, wait for the
officers to assist you in joining the
flow of traffic.
Types of Hazards and How to Avoid Them
Part 1
Every time we get behind the wheel of a
car we are about to embark on a journey,
where our fate may well lie in the hands of
others and the differing dynamics of the road
environment.
Every journey is different and that is why we

The Elderly and Disabled

Look
out
for
older
people near to the road.
These senior citizens
sometimes
suffer
mobility problems, might
be helped by walking
sticks, and could be
unsteady on their feet.
They may suffer hearing or vision impairments
and their special awareness and alertness
may not be as acute as others. The same
applies to those with assisted mobility, such
as wheelchair users. Although they are being
helped to move, their manoeuvrability may be
compromised. It is also important for drivers
to exercise patience and allow more time for
those who need it to cross the road safely.
Adults
Adults walking onto the road can also be a
potential hazard, crossing at inappropriate
places, between parked cars or dustbins and
crossing roads diagonally.
Parents with pushchairs are another problem
for road users, as a pushchair is manoeuvred
onto the road whilst the baby is pushed closer
to the danger zone in doing so.
Traffic Officers
Traffic wardens, mobility agents, police,
Guardia Civil and other state forces work
tirelessly to ensure our safety. Therefore, it
is not uncommon for them to be in the road
directing traffic or performing a special control.
It is mandatory to act on the instructions
given by people controlling traffic.

Once the officers have finished dealing with

you, they will assist you in joining the main
flow of traffic.
When stopping a vehicle the main factor is
safety.
Remember
1. A flashing red light indicates that you
must stop.

Mrs D
Camposol A

Look out for tell-tale signs of being near

areas where children might play, such as
parks, gardens and even shops. Look out for
objects in the road or on the pavement such
as bikes or balls, as these might be in the
mind of a child oblivious to the road dangers.
Many young people can also become hazards
without realising it. Look out for people
wearing headphones, or perhaps listening to
music and less aware of their surroundings.
Allow extra space and slow down in areas
where young people might be present.
School Zones
Roads passing near schools may display
a warning sign indicating the potential
presence of children. It is common to see
vehicles double-parked or illegally parked.
It is important to be very careful because a
child may appear unexpectedly. Maximum
permitted speed limits are also likely to be

Cyclists
Cyclists are one of the most vulnerable groups
of road users. When you go to overtake, make
sure you leave the minimum 1.5 metre gap
between your vehicle and the cycle. Look for
signs and signals given by the rider and look
at the road ahead. Make sure you can safely
overtake and return to your own lane in good
time and look for any potential hazards to the
cyclist such as potholes or other obstacles
which may cause the rider to deviate from
the bikes course.
Motorbikes
Motorbikes are also a high risk and vulnerable
group. Similar to bicycles, motorbikes may
encounter obstacles on the road that cause
them to lose balance. As motorbikes are
likely to be travelling at a higher speed than
pushbikes, the potential risk is much higher
in the event of an impact as the riders body
would absorb much of the physical shock.

Esencia Pura 13th August

The start of this walk in Moratalla, was
from Campo de San Juan. The air was
fresh as we heard the cooing of beeeaters and multi-coloured kites high in
the sky. We could smell the fragrance
and perfumed essences in the air of the
fields of lavandin and lavender. We had
a magnificent view of the old Miocene
cliff and caves of Zan, the Paleokarts
de la Hoya Cat, the Sanctuary bero de
La Nariz, the rows of poplars along the
Rio Alhrabe. As we walked, we saw
many plants, distinguishing the obvious
differences between them, by the
fragrance, texture, colour and foliage.

A shadow glided stealthily to our left and

as it rose we realised it was a booted
eagle looking for something to eat. We
decided to follow suit near one of the
sites of geological interest surrounding
Campo de San Juan, enjoying the view.
The joints of the wheel house provide

42

a dining tent of about 25 to 23 million

years ago.

Before we continued, we discovered

many fossils that were hidden in this
curious formation. We then set sail off
towards Zan de Arriba. Moratalla looked
beautiful thanks to the efforts of its
inhabitants, with colourful faades and
freshly painted houses decorated with
flowers, surrounded by fertile orchards.
We approached slowly, enjoying the
fragrant walk, the ideal temperature
and the colours around us, to find a
device that launches into the sky puffs
of smoke heavy with the smell as they
burn the lavender plants to feed the fire
of the huge boiler. The boiler roared like
an angry dragon when they open the
door to feed the flames as the steam
did its job. One of the huge pots was

opened and the aroma spilled out over

the group, the village and the fields. The
crystalline essential oil, floating on the
water has to be separated. In the small
room the intensity of the fragrance is
amazing.

We said goodbye to our gracious hosts

after buying a small bottle of pure
essence before going to the restaurant El
Cortijo for local sausages, lamb, grilled
goat, fish and homemade desserts.
Our sincere thanks to the people of Zan
and the Campo de San Juan, for your
kindness and caring treatment.

Our apologies to all those who could not

join us. We believe that small groups
are an appropriate tactic to get a quality
activity safely and with respect of the
natural environment and the people
who inhabit it. We hope that these
considerations are understood and
shared.

To me, David was the brother (and I

had four), that as we were growing
up looked to spend time with me,
chatting and helping me rearrange
my bedroom. In later years we would
chat about our love of plants and his
allotment. He was a simple man, loved
by his family, with no great aspirations,
or so I thought. How wrong was I?
His son spoke of the influence on his
life. There were close to 180 folk at
his funeral. I had no idea he knew so
many people or was as well respected,
any more than I realised he still had
a faith.

Did we give of our time, draw close

to them in their time of need, show
love and compassion or, could we not
be bothered; too busy with our own
importance, festering on the things
that annoyed us, spoiling relationships.
How important then as Christians to
make sure that our walk in life reflects
that of Jesus. He loved everyone;
the adulteress, the tax collector, His
friends who at the last betrayed Him,
but he still had time for them.
Not only did He give His life so that
we might be saved.
The old adage dont judge a book by

this has taught me is to remember that
I live my life for the Lord because there
are those who will be taking note and
maybe even copying some of the ways
in which I live, particularly the younger

Be #PassportAware and Save Time and

Money
Last year, over 5,000 Britons lost their
passports while in Spain!
With over 21,000 British passports lost
or stolen last year, the Foreign and
Commonwealth Office (FCO) is urging British
nationals abroad to be #PassportAware
and keep their passport safe in order to
avoid extra costs and troubles.
Most holidaymakers enjoy trouble-free trips.
However, valuable holiday time and money
can be lost if a passport is lost or stolen, as
the victim may need to report the theft to
the police, as well as spend time at the local
Consulate or Embassy so that they can be
issued with an emergency travel document
(ETD). Consulates around the world issued
over 30,000 ETDs last year and assisted
distressed British nationals who had been
victims of crime.
For the second year running, the FCO has
produced a series of short films with fraud
and stealth crime expert James Freedman in
order to raise awareness of passport hustling
techniques and to educate the public on how
to avoid this crime. These videos show a
further four techniques that thieves use to
steal passports as well as tips to avoid being
a victim.

Foreign
Commonwealth Office Minister, said

The Plumeria (Frangipani) is one of the

most succulent plants around and it blooms
during the warm months, normally from June
to November or December depending on the
weather. The plants, during the months of
autumn and winter need little care, because
while its cold it needs no watering. Start
watering in the spring when there are signs of
the first buds of leaves. Ideally, Plumeria is
in its element when it can have plenty of sun
and enough water to maintain soil moistness
just above a state of dryness. A common
mistake of novice Plumeria growers is to
over-water the plant when it is not exposed
to enough sun, thereby resulting in a rotted
root system. Conversely, if a Plumeria

While we should all enjoy our holidays, it

is important that we remain vigilant about
valuables particularly passports. Becoming
a victim of theft or losing your passport
could ruin your trip and replacing a passport
will cost money and valuable holiday time.
By following the simple tips included in these
videos you can minimise the risk of falling
victim to thieves while abroad.
James Freedman, stealth crime expert,
said With identity theft on the rise, the
actual cost of losing your passport could be
thousands of pounds. Criminals and conmen are always evolving the tricks they
use to target tourists, but a few simple
precautions will really help you to stay safe.
Only carry what you really need and keep
cash and other valuables in a secure pocket
or bag. Remember that if you put bags
down, they should always be in your line of
sight. If you dont need your passport and
other valuables when youre out and about,
leave them at the hotel. Above all, trust your
instincts and be aware of anyone invading
your personal space.
There are many other ways in which thieves
can target your passports and valuables and
in addition to pickpockets, many Consulates
worldwide have seen a rise in cases of items
being taken from hire cars, such as the
couple who had their passports stolen while
celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary
with a trip to the South of Spain and were so
upset that they decided to cut their holiday

plant receives maximum exposure to the

sun, but they arent watered enough, the
plant will die. It can be propagated easily
from cuttings of leafless stem tips in spring.
Cuttings should be allowed to dry at the
base before planting in well-drained soil.
Cuttings are particularly susceptible to rot in
moist soil.

The FCOs top tips for keeping your

passport safe:
* Be aware of your surroundings and
be wary of strangers who take an
unusual amount of interest in you.
*

A damaged passport cannot be used

for travel, so value it and keep it safe.

Lock your passport in a safe if you

have access to one, or if you are
required to keep it with you, ensure
its location is not visible.

Make two photocopies of your

passport leave one with friends or
family and take the second with you,
or store an electronic copy securely.
Where permitted, use your photocopy
as alternative ID, for example when
going out at night.

For certain countries your passport

must be valid for 6 months after the
date you travel check the entry
requirements before you go.

Ensure you fill in the emergency

details/next of kin page before you
go.

insecticide.
Irrigation always depends on the container
in which it is planted, as it is watered only
when the soil is completely dry. Transplant
Plumeria during the hot months into very
good substrata.

The Plumeria is related to the Oleander and

possesses the same irritant.
Plumeria Rubra Acutifolia, depending on
their origin may have the typical white and
yellow flower, though different shades of pink
and purple and even red flower are found
in Asia. All of them
can now be found in
Spain because of its
perfect adaptation to
the climate we have.
The flowers are most
fragrant at night.
The Plumeria does
not usually have to

short. Thieves anticipate items of value such

as passports being left in hire cars, so dont
take any chances.

This succulent grows with long stems and

has a very elegant flower. Its leaves are
long and wide, although these are lost
for about three months. It is ideal for the
garden, balcony or terrace with little work

Plumeria flowers are ideal for cutting and
using in floral decorations such as leis.

Childrens Sight -- Why Sight for Kids?

An estimated 1.4 million children in the
world are blind, with three quarters of them
in the poorest countries, which can mean
more than 50% of cases go untreated?
LCIF formed a joint venture with Johnson &
Johnson Visual Care Companies to form the
Sight for Kids programme. To date, more
than 23 million children have been screened;
850,000 were referred to professionals and
432,000 received care treatment. 325,000
children were provided with spectacles and
107,000 others were treated for other eye
disorders. Almost 142,000 school teachers
and volunteers in 44,000 schools and day
care centres have been trained to recognise
and screen childrens sight.

Under the partnership, Lions Clubs

International agreed to raise 30 million.
The funds raised by the Lions will be
matched $1 for $2 by the UKs Department
for International Development (DFID)
and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation,
bringing the total to US$60 million.

This came to mind recently when I read

Costa Clida Chronicle - September 2016

I drove cross country on small empty idyllic

roads from the Slovakian town of Banska
Stiavnica. Twenty minutes later, I entered
the spa town of Sklene Teplice.

underwear would have to do. After a quick

shower, then through a door, I entered the
cave itself.

I first came here in 2007 and have returned

many times with friends and family. This is
no banya; its not a sauna or a steam room.
Its an underground cave full of thermal
water.

The temperature of the water is 42c, which

is 107f. As you step into it, your body gives
out a slow deep sigh of sheer pleasure.
The water comes to about half-way up
your torso. You cant swim in here, its just
too hot. You would probably have a heart
attack if you did! You just sit down on the
underwater plinths and with the water now
up to your chin, letting it do its magic.
Sklene Teplice is the oldest spa in Slovakia
and was first discovered in 1550. Its a
naturally formed cave with stone waterfalls
and the thermal water bubbles away deep
underground; all conjured up by the greatest
genius ever Mother Nature. Coming here
is scientifically recommended for ailments
such as arthritis, skin diseases, osteoporosis
and blood circulation. The website describes
it as an oasis for your bones.

I bought my ticket, which surprisingly

cost only 4.50 and after signing the
obligatory health notice saying youre not
suffering from heart disease and such like,
I entered through a tunnel which took me
to the changing area, but as I stripped off,
I realised I hadnt brought trunks. Ah well,

54

The water feels thick; thick with nutrients,

including calcium and magnesium, which
makes it discoloured. Of course sulphur
is present which gives off that smell we
all know, but its not a full-on rotten eggs
smell; just a tang, which in this environment
is actually enjoyable. There were only five
other people in at the time. Still, I found a
little nook, off the main area and sat down
in the dark. I ran my hand over the rough
cave walls, smiled, sat back and closed my
eyes. The water and its goodness seemed to
seep into my very bones. The outside world
did not exist.
You are not allowed to stay in longer than
twenty minutes, for safety reasons. I lasted
fifteen;
it
was
enough. Already my
body felt better, but
the real benefits were
about to come, when
you lock in the heat.
Wrapped
in
my
big
white
sheet,
the
attendant
led
me gently by the
arm through to the
relaxation room which
has comfy chairs,
some tropical fish
tanks and nothing

else. Tiny pin pricks of light in the cave walls

and roof reminded me of an on-stage star
cloth.
Once I was settled in my chair, I tucked my
arms inside my sheet, then the attendant
carefully wrapped what can only be
described as a thick woollen tartan blanket,
right round me. Its like youve just been
mummified, with only your face showing.
She then tipped back the chair and I was
completely horizontal. Relax she said to
me in English.
There are two stages during this treatment;
first a build-up of heat that comes from
inside your body and pushes out, but the
sheet and thick blanket youre wrapped up
in, doesnt let it escape, then you start to
sweat. Bring on the detox.
I looked up and as the tiny lights danced
on the cave roof, Im convinced I saw an
image of a chimpanzee wearing a pork pie
hat smoking a big fat cigar. I was drifting,
drifting off somewhere deep and peaceful. I
closed my eyes and was gone, not to sleep,
but a deep state of total relaxation with no
conscious thoughts.
Suddenly, I was gently tapped on the
shoulder. It was the assistant, telling me
my time was up. I nodded, but stayed put
for five more minutes to let myself come
back into focus. How long had I been gone
I wondered. I later found out, I been gone
for twenty-five minutes. The only thing I can
remember is seeing Zebedee from the Magic
Roundabout! No idea where he came from.
I tipped my chair upright and slowly walked
through to the changing area. Forgetting I
should go into one of the changing lockers,
I just took off my wet underwear there and
then and my bum was bared to the world.
I was so chilled it hadnt occurred to me,
nor did it seem to bother the lady standing
close by!
Once outside in the crisp fresh air, I sat
down on a bench and quietly drank a litre of
water. My body was glowing from the inside
and every fibre of my being was at peace.
The only problem was, I now had a few
hours drive south to drop off my hire car in
Hungary. I was in no hurry and would hurry
for no-one. Tractors could overtake me as
far as I was concerned.

Cauliflower
One of my favourite vegetables is
Cauliflower and I am happy to munch on
some raw florets or a bit of stalk anytime.
My grandchildren also love to eat it raw
and I pop out a few dips like alioli, cream
cheese or couscous and they lap it up, not
realising how good it is for them. Like most
vegetables, Cauliflower can be added
to any dish to add texture and flavour
including salads. However, it also makes
a great dish on its own and goes very
well with cheese. Below are a few easy
recipes like Soup, Cauliflower Cheese and
Tempura. My father taught me to make a
roux when I was 8 which is the base for
all sauces and very easy, but you can buy
packets as well. I make the Cauliflower
Cheese to go with a roast dinner or on its
own for a tasty lunch.
Buen Apetito

100g cheese (cheddar is preferred)

Bring a large saucepan of water to the boil,
then add the cauliflower and cook for 5
mins or just cooked and still firm. Drain
the cauliflower, then tip into an ovenproof
dish. Heat oven to 220C/200C/gas 7. Put
the saucepan back on the heat and add
the milk, flour and butter. Keep whisking
fast as the butter melts and the mixture
comes to the boil the flour will disappear
and the sauce will begin to thicken. Whisk
for 2 mins while the sauce bubbles and
becomes nice and thick. Turn off the heat,
stir in most of the cheese and pour over
the cauliflower. Scatter over the remaining
cheese.

Oven-Roasted Cauliflower
5 to 6 cups cauliflower florets, about
1 inches in diameter (from 1 medium
cauliflower)
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
1 tbsp sliced garlic
2 tbsp lemon juice
1 tsp salt
tsp black pepper
2 tbsp grated cheese
Mix all ingredients together apart from the
cheese. Pour over the cauliflower and bake
in the oven for 25/30 minutes. Sprinkle
cheese over the top when it comes out of
the oven and serve in 5 minutes.

One Pan Cauliflower and Potato Curry

2 tbsp vegetable oil
1 large onion chopped
1 large piece ginger
3 garlic cloves, finely chopped
tsp turmeric
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp curry powder, or to taste
227g can chopped tomatoes
tsp sugar
1 cauliflower cut into florets
2 potatoes cut into med sized squares
1 small green chilli
A squeeze lemon juice
A handful coriander, roughly chopped, to
serve
Naan bread and natural yogurt, to serve
Heat the oil in a saucepan. Cook the
onion for 10 mins until soft, then add the
ginger, garlic, turmeric, cumin and curry
powder. Cook for 1 min more. Stir in the
tomatoes and sugar. Add the cauliflower,
potatoes and split chilli, seasoning to
taste. Cover with a lid and gently cook for
a good 30 mins, stirring occasionally, until
the vegetables are tender add a drop of
water if you need to, but it is meant to
be a dry curry. When the vegetables are
cooked, remove the chilli if you like, stir in
a squeeze of lemon juice and scatter with
coriander. Serve with your choice of Indian
bread and a dollop of yogurt.

Cauliflower Cheese
1 large cauliflower
500ml milk
4 tbsp flour
50g butter

Cauliflower Soup
A knob of butter
1 large onion
1 large cauliflower cut into florets
1 potato cut into squares

56

www.costacalidachronicle.com

700ml vegetable stock (a cube is fine)

400ml milk
100g mature cheddar, diced
Heat the butter in a large saucepan. Tip in
the onion and cook until softened, about
5 mins, stirring often. Add the cauliflower,
potato, stock, milk and seasoning. Bring to
the boil, then reduce the heat and leave
to simmer for about 30 mins until the
cauliflower is soft and the potato almost
collapsing. Whizz in a food processor or
crush with a potato masher until you get a
creamy, thick soup. Top up with more milk
to thin a little if serving in mugs. You can
make ahead up to 2 days in advance, cool,
cover and leave in the fridge until needed,
or freeze for up to 1 month. When ready
to serve, warm through, ladle into mugs or
bowls, top with the cheese pieces, then stir
through before eating.
Cauliflower Tempura
1 small cauliflower cut into florets
100g plain flour
2 eggs
2 tbsp vegetable oil
Vegetable oil for deep frying
Cook the cauliflower in boiling water for 2
mins. Tip into a colander, rinse under the
cold tap, drain well and set aside.
Put the flour in a large bowl with a pinch of
salt. Whisk the egg yolks and 175ml iced
water together, then whisk into the flour
with the oil to make a smooth batter. In a
separate, clean bowl whisk the egg whites
until stiff, then fold into the batter.
Heat the oil in a deep fryer or large wok to
190C. Coat some of the cauliflower in the
batter then use a slotted spoon to carefully
lift into the hot oil. Deep-fry the cauliflower
for 2-3 mins until golden and puffy. Drain
on kitchen towel and continue with the
rest in batches. Sprinkle the cauliflower
with salt and serve with a bowl of alioli or
mayonnaise.

Cruz Azul Helps to

Keep Cat Colonies
Under Control
Cruz Azul Murcia,
in addition to helping
pet owners on limited
incomes, is now active
in helping to reduce the
number of feral cats in
the Murcia region.
Last Christmas saw the arrival of four young,
abandoned cats on the Sucina Golf Urbanisation.
Residents started feeding them in the hope they
would be able to handle them and take them
to the vet to be sterilised. Quite quickly two of
the cats produced seven kittens between them!
Residents realised they would soon be overrun
with feral cats if they didnt work together to
find a solution.

When it comes to reproduction, cats are prolific

breeders. One female kitty can produce an
average of 12 kittens each year if not spayed.
Once a kitten reaches puberty, typically
between 5 and 9 months of age, she will be able
to reproduce. Some kitties mature as young as
3 months old, usually after they reach around
2 kilos in weight. In warm climates such as
ours, the females can remain on heat all yearround.
Trap-Neuter-Return means the cats are
humanely trapped in their colony, taken to
a local vet to be sterilised, ear-clipped and
vaccinated under anaesthetic and then returned
to their colony site. Ear-clipping is to indicate
the cat has been sterilised. Cats are normally
returned to their colony on the same day with
good antibiotic protection.
Cruz Azul provided the traps and explained
the procedure to the Sucina Golf residents.
These neighbours got together and donated
towards the neutering costs, with Cruz Azul
paying for two of the operations. They have

so far managed to sterilise three of the four

mothers and two of the kittens, so they are
well on their way to controlling their cat colony,
without cruelty, so that cats and residents can
live happily side by side.
Cruz Azul Murcia is always happy to help
local communities control their cat colonies.
Co-operation between neighbours is the key
to a successful campaign, raising funds for the
operations and co-ordinating the Trap-NeuterReturn campaign, following the guidelines that
Cruz Azul Murcia provides. Traps are available
free of charge at the Cruz Azul Centre in
San Javier and volunteers are happy to take
everyone through the correct procedure. If
you would like to know more, please give Sue
Thomason a call on 693 017 616.
Cruz Azul Murcia is a registered charity (No.
11.720/1a) and exists to provide veterinary care
for the sick and injured pets of people in need
and to promote responsible pet ownership. If
you or someone you know needs help, or you
would like to volunteer or donate, please call
693 017 616 or visit their website www.

Banks In Spain Adjust Strategy PostBrexit

Spanish banks have analysed their financial
future in the wake of the UKs vote to leave
the European Union and the uncertainty
which currently reigns until Article 50 is
triggered and the results of negotiations
between Britain and the other 27 EU nations
are known.
Banco Santander, which is present in the UK
after buying out Abbey National in 2004, says
its shares have lost 10% since the results of
the referendum were made known.
Morgan Stanley estimates its average profits
across its branches will shrink by a typical
18% by the end of 2018.
Bankinter expects the next few months to
see ongoing market volatility, especially
as many UK fund managers have locked in
investments in property in response to the
flood of requests for reimbursement.
Galicia Woman, 56, Arrested For Causing
Forest Fires
A woman who started 15 forest fires in the
north-western region of Galicia has been
caught whilst attempting to ignite another
seven.

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

In just over a month, she has singlehandedly wiped out 22 hectares 220,000
square metres or around 55 acres around
the town of Cerceda (Corua Province). The
seven fires she was trying to start when she
was caught had just begun to ignite. Six of
them were put out by forestry brigadiers
whilst another was extinguished by a local
resident. All seven of them were close to
residential homes, potentially sparking a
multiple tragedy.
International
Paedophile
Racket
Targeting Socially-Vulnerable Children
A paedophile racket targeting children all
over the world - mostly in Asia - has been
busted with seven arrests across Spain and
over 80 victims identified, of whom at least
eight have been physically assaulted.
The gang targeted children from poor
backgrounds and dysfunctional families in
Barcelona, Valencia, Tortosa (Tarragona
Province) and parts of Morocco, showing
them heterosexual underage pornographic
pictures and videos they had made on trips
over a 15-year period to Cambodia, Laos,
Thailand, Sri Lanka, Indonesia - the islands

66

of Bali and Java - Singapore, Kenya, Tunisia,

France and the Czech Republic.
All the young victims were aged under 13
and the shocking footage was shown to try to
groom them and convince them to take part
in the gangs operations. The children were
encouraged to perform sexual acts on other
minors and given alcohol and drugs to reduce
their inhibitions whilst they were filmed and
photographed.
Police found over 28 web domain names
which had been used to distribute over a
million videos and photos, and at least 1,000
DVDs which were ordered online and posted
or sent in downloadable format.
Drivers On AP-7 Fined For Excessive
Load On Roof-Rack
Police in Catalunya have fined a driver
because his car was clearly overloaded with
the roof-rack piled high. The occupants said
that they were heading for Barcelona to catch
the ferry to Morocco. Once it was considered
to be safe to continue, they were fined 200.
Wolf-Hunting
Conservation charities are in uproar over a
recent law change in Castilla y Len allowing
up to 143 wolves to be hunted annually until
2019.
Ecologists in Action and the wildlife
association Lobo Marley (Marley Wolf) are
among those who call the new rules indecent
and criminal. The annual total of 143 would
clear the entire centre-northern region of
wolves. Well over half of those killed by
hunters will be from Portugal, a country
which enjoys huge sums in European Union
conservation funds for controlled breeding
programmes to increase its wolf population.
The 143 wolves which can be hunted are in
addition to those killed by forestry agents or
by farmers shooting them to protect their
livestock, which account for at least another
50.
The licence to kill goes against Spains
national laws on conservation and also
breaches EU rules, the charities say.

Renaissance for Iberian Imperial Eagles

Endangered Iberian Imperial Eagles have
been on the verge of dying out since the mid1980s, but controlled breeding programmes
have led to a sudden population explosion in
the Doana National
Park, which lies across
the
far
southern
coastal provinces of
Cdiz and Huelva.
In just one season,
15 chicks have been
hatched alive and are
growing
healthily,
says
the
Spanish
conservation
charity
BirdLife.
They hatched in four
nests, with three in
each, and another two

www.costacalidachronicle.com

with one and two respectively, after six of

the parks nine breeding couples successfully
reproduced this spring.
Some of the cause of the Iberian Imperial
Eagles decline has been a struggle to find
food a carnivorous species, it mainly eats
rabbits, but they are usually pipped at the
post by the Iberian Lynx. BirdLife has been
providing 70% of the Imperial Eagles diet,
by hanging dead rabbits high up in trees
so they can be reached by birds, but not
by ground-roaming creatures such as the
Iberian Lynx, who are given food separately
by other conservation groups.
Iberian Imperial Eagles work in pairs,
meaning both parents bring back food for
their chicks.
Richest And Poorest Towns In Spain
The commuter town of Pozuelo de Alarcn
in the Greater Madrid region, about 15
kilometres north-west of the city is the
wealthiest, and the port town of Torrevieja
in the far south of the province of Alicante,
bordering on that of Murcia, is the poorest.
Torreviejas mean average household income
one-fifth of that of the richest town in
Spain is just a few euros under 14,000
a year and is the only town with earnings of
typically less than 15,000 annually.
The largest city in Spain is Madrid, with
a total of 3,141,991 inhabitants and the
second-largest, Barcelona, is home to 1.6
million and the countrys third city, Valencia,
is a long way behind with just 786,000.
Murcia has 400,000 or more inhabitants.
Swimming Pools Double The Value Of
Property
According to calculations by estate agency
analysts - a typical home in Spain with a pool
can cost around 407,704, compared with
193,525 for one without. Only 22.7% of
properties on the market have one.
These figures vary vastly by area, size and
type of home, and nearby facilities, but
generally, figures show that homes with a
pool tend to sell for twice as much as those
which do not have one, or do not have access
to a communal one on the same complex.
Owning a private pool on an estate not
subject to community charges or not part of
a freehold complex still involves maintenance
fees - cleaning, topping up, checking and
altering the chlorine levels and fixing leaks,
replacing pumps and so on usually involve
specialist knowledge and hard, manual
labour, which can cost a typical 700 or so a
year by paying a pool company.
Health Authorities Reduce Price of
Medicines
Over-the-counter
prescription
medicine
has gone down in price saving Spanish
households up to 14.6 million a year.
A total of 11,735 different pills have been
reduced in pharmacies and the other 2,744

If youre not a Christian and youve started
to read this article, can I just encourage
you to carry on and read it through to the
end. The fact that youve started must
show a spark of interest, so what have you
got to lose? It will only take a couple of
minutes.
Id like to start by asking the question
What is it that is preventing you from
taking that first step towards being a
committed Christian?
Do you feel that you dont know enough
about it?
Do you feel too cosy right where you are?
Why rock the boat?
Whats in it for me?
Do you think that it might be too much for
you to handle?
Maybe you feel inadequate, unworthy, a bit

you have too much guilt hanging over from
your past;
too much hurt in your life. Then you feel
no different from the vast majority of
people reading this article right now; both
Christians and non-Christians.
For many there is the misconception that
being a Christian will mean that there will
no longer be any fun in your life. There are
too many boring, restrictive rules to obey.
You wont be able to have a good time.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
Living your life according to Gods

kennel space transfer out of the Perrera. As
and when dogs go to Germany we are able
to take more dogs out of the Perrera and
prepare them for transportation. There is a
vast amount of paper work involved, with
trips to the vets for neutering, inoculations

Present Perfect Practice

Its always an interesting challenge finding
ways of practising the language that we
learn. Here is a piece of text I wrote a
couple of years ago which is a summary of
that year. It was written in December which
is a time when everyone takes stock of the
past year, including the television channels.
Its when they tell you that so-and-so died
this summer and you are absolutely amazed
because you thought hed been dead at
least ten years already.
So here is my own summary of the year,
but I hasten to add that this is not going to
be an exercise in translation or any other
kind of boring revision. All you have to do
is read it and hopefully you will understand
every, or nearly every, word. Thats the
idea, anyway.

Past the point of no return.

Many years ago in the UK, I attended a
meeting one evening where the guest
speaker was the explorer Sir Ranulph
Fiennes. It was a really interesting talk
about his life experiences and adventures
while attempting to do exploits that no-one
has done before. He told the completely
engaged audience of the time he was
attempting to reach the pole and was
dragging his support sledge behind him;
the ice gave way and the sledge slipped
backwards into the freezing water. There,
as he struggled to hold onto the straps that
bound the sledge to him, he was left in a
no-win situation - he had a life-changing

choice to make. If he released the harness

to the sledge, it would sink under the ice
and he would die of starvation. It was
too far to go back and it was too far
to go on. Alternatively, he could try to
haul the sledge out of the water, but to do
this he would have to remove his gloves
so that he could grip the harness enough
to stand a chance of succeeding. If he
removed his gloves, he knew that he would
lose his fingers the moment he immersed
them in the icy waters, through frostbite.
If he succeeded, he would have enough
provisions to survive. His choice was the
latter of the two options and he held up his
hand to the audience, showing us the loss
of his fingertips.
Every day of our lives are filled with
choices that have to be made. Thankfully
most of those decisions are not of the
type of decision I have already written
about, yet every choice we make involves
consequences.
We can choose to help someone, or not;
to give someone a leg up in life when we
are able, or not; to bless someone, to go
the extra mile, to sacrifice for the sake
of someone, to give up our parking place
when we are in a hurry, to trust a politician,
or not! From simple decisions like putting
the kettle on and what shall we do today,
to life-changing steps to break addictions
or putting your life on hold for the sake of
others.
Choices come at us all the time, at all
different speeds and from every angle.
Think about it - from the moment we
wake in the morning to the moment we
drift off to sleep at night our lives are

made up of a series of choices. Our hectic

and complicated lives these days make
our minds work overtime compared to
our ancestors. In fact, even in my own
lifetime, I believe the amount of choices
we have to make every day has increased
dramatically.
No wonder there are so
many folk struggling with mental health
issues in todays world!
I personally believe that there is one
major choice that we all have to make
during our lifetimes and that is to
accept or reject Jesus Christ as our
Saviour.
The Bible says to believe in the Lord Jesus
Christ and you will be saved.
The most wonderful thing is that while
we have life, we cannot go past the point
of no return with Jesus. It is never too
late to choose Him and nothing we have
done excludes us from receiving His Love
and Grace.
Author Max Lucado writes You need
a Yahweh [Gods Name]. You dont
need what Dorothy found. Remember her
discovery in the Wizard of Oz? She and her
trio followed the Yellow Brick Road only
to discover that the wizard was a whimp!
Nothing but smoke and mirrors and tindrum thunder.
Is that the kind of god you need? You dont
need to carry the burden of a lesser god...
a god on a shelf, a god in a box, or a god
in a bottle. No, you need a God who is so
mind-numbingly mighty and yet can come
in the soft of the night and touch you with
the tenderness of an April snow. We need
a Yahweh

Barcelona Part 2
On the day of my eagerly awaited visit to
the Sagrada Familia, we had to turf my
teenage sons out of bed at the unearthly
hour of 9am, amid much grumbling! We
had decided to take the train into the city,
so we drove to a nearby station and settled
in for the 45 minute trip and yes, the
boys just slept all the way there!
We switched to the metro and hopped off
in the centre, hoping to catch some of the
sights of the city as we walked through.
The architecture is amazing and we passed
several of the citys most famous buildings
en route.
Arriving
at
the plaza of
the Sagrada
Familia,
David put his
hand
over
my eyes as
we rounded
the
corner
(I had been
forbidden to
even look on
the internet
before
the
trip) and the
first sight of
the famous
building was
amazing.

The inside is
even more
stunning
than
the
faade and I have to confess that my eyes
filled with tears as I turned to marvel at
the stained glass windows, with displays of
light and colour filling the whole lower floor.
We spent a happy 45 minutes wandering
around the lower floors and had also prebooked to go up one of the towers, which
costs a little more than the basic entry fee,
but I highly recommend it.

Satisfied and tired, we made our way

across the road to the Italian ice cream
parlour, where a round of gigantic cones
helped us recover energy levels for the
visit to Park Guell in the afternoon.

I would love to go back after 2020 when

the Sagrada Familia is on track to be
completed and the scaffolding will be
removed, but at least if I dont make it, I
have achieved one of my smaller lifetime
ambitions.

Not for the faint hearted or those with

vertigo, a lift takes you to the top of the
towers where you can enjoy the panoramic
view of the city. You do have to walk DOWN
the steep spiral staircase at the end of the
visit, which is a dizzying event and takes it
out of the legs just a little!

Costa Clida Chronicle - September 2016

This year is speeding by and we are now

at the latter part of 2016. I am writing this
month about a book I have just read called
Proof of Heaven. This is written by Dr
Eben Alexander, who is a neurosurgeon in
America; it is a New York Times best seller.
This book is basically about Dr Alexanders
journey into the afterlife.
He has a near-death experience and it
has been quoted by a very well-known
author, Dr Raymond A. Moody Jr. It is the
most astounding account he has heard in
more than four decades of studying this
phenomenon of near-death experiences.
Eminent neurosurgeon Dr Alexander
always considered himself a man of
science. His unwavering belief in evidence-

Writing this in mid-August I have to say

It aint arf ot mum! With temperatures
in the high 30s it seems toooo hot to do
anything. Work days we have to just get
on with it rest days it seems too much
effort to get off the chair and go to the
pool! The dogs laze around all day in any
shade they can find, but then want to play
in the cool of the night much like the
residents of Madrid who are all down at the
coast beach, eat, siesta, beach and night
out!!!!
TV NEWS
Again, as last month, not much new news
to report in the TV world so I thought we
would have a look at fault-finding and
quality of reception issues.
For various reasons UK TV reception is
often not as good in southern Spain as it
is in the UK. The first point to appreciate is
that the whole UK TV system is designed
for reception in the UK. Forget the legal
arguments of viewing a countrys TV
system outside of that country and
there are legal agreements forbidding this.
Rightly or wrongly, agree or disagree, they
do exist, but the systems are designed for
TV reception in the UK and the fact we can
get some UK TV here must be considered

based medicine fuelled a career in some of

the top institutions of the world, but all this
was set to change.

unique in the literature of spiritual

experiences which may well change how
we understand our role in the universe.

One morning in 2008 he fell into a coma

after suffering a rare form of bacterial
meningitis. Scans of his brain revealed
massive damage. He was not expected to
survive.

If you want to read this incredible story I

suggest you get hold of this book.

In this astonishing book, Dr Alexander

shares his experience, pieced together
from notes he made as soon as he was
able to write again. Unlike many other
accounts of near-death experiences, he is
able to explain why his brain was incapable
of fabricating his journey into the afterlife.
Proof of Heaven is a gripping story;

as a bonus of living in Spain and not a

right. With that in mind, reception will not
always be 100%.
You will be getting your UK TV by one of
two systems - satellite via a dish, or the
internet. With internet TV systems there is
not a lot the end user can check or adjust
to improve quality.
The BIG factor is internet supply
quality.
If you getting a whole new system, ask
the TV supplier who to use for the internet
supply.
They should know who their
system works well with. The router should
be adjacent to the TV and IPTV digibox and
both should be rebooted on a regular basis
(depower, wait 30 seconds or more and
repower router followed by digibox a few
minutes later this will set boxes/software
to original).
Use quality cables to connect all the bits
together. The Ethernet cable connecting
the router to the digibox can be one of
three standards cat 5, 5e or 6 use 5e
or 6. 5 can give problems especially over
longer runs.
Use a good quality HDMI cable to connect
digibox to TV although this is less critical.
Finally tell your internet supplier what you
are doing and they
can often optimise
the supply to you.

the edge bits. Signals are so weak so you

must have the best of equipment that has
been installed 100% correctly. It can still
surprise us when we go to a new client
and find the errors in installation that can
be made by amateur installers. The only
real way to check your system is to get a
professional (and many are not!) installer
to check it over. All these can be critical
factors dish size/make/model and its
alignment, LNB type/make/model and its
alignment, cable type/grade/condition,
satellite receiver type/make/model. All
these factors can significantly affect the
quality of the picture that finally gets to
the TV and it needs an expert eye with
industry knowledge to assess a system.
We often see clients who have spent a
fortune on the latest TV available only
to be disappointed with the picture quality,
but they are driving it from a cheap digibox
connected to the dish with sun damaged
cable and an inferior LNB or some other
bad combination!

Costa Clida Chronicle - September 2016

Cauliflower belongs to the group of cruciferous

vegetables, also known as cabbages. It is
closely related to broccoli, Brussels sprouts,
kale and cabbage. Cauliflower originates
from Asia Minor and cultivation started 600
years B.C. in Turkey. It gained popularity
in Europe in the 16th century. China is the
greatest producer of Cauliflowers.
Cauliflower is a cool-season crop. It is more
difficult to grow than its relatives because it
does not tolerate the heat or cold as well.
Cauliflowers like at least 6 hours of full sun
and the soil needs be very rich in organic
matter. There are a few pests and diseases
that can destroy the Cauliflower plants such
as cabbage root maggots, aphids and black
rot.

development. It may even diminish agerelated memory decline and your brains
vulnerability to toxins during childhood.
6. Detoxification Support
Cauliflower helps your bodys ability
to detoxify in multiple ways. The
glucosinolates in Cauliflower also activate
detoxification enzymes.
7. Digestive Benefits
Cauliflower is an important source of
dietary fibre for digestive health.
8. Antioxidants and Phytonutrients
Cauliflower is packed with Vitamin C, betacarotene, kaempferol, quercetin, rutin,
cinnamic acid and much more. If you dont
have an adequate supply of antioxidants
you can be at risk of oxidative stress,
which leads to accelerated tissue and
organ damage.

When the Cauliflower heads are compact,

white and firm, it is time to harvest them. Cut
the heads off the plant, but leave some of the
leaves around the head to keep it protected.
Colour of the head depends on the variety. The
most common type of Cauliflower is white,
but it can be also be green, purple, orange,
brown or yellow. The green variety is known
as broccoflower because it looks like broccoli.
If the heads are too small but have started
to open up, they will not improve and should
still be harvested and if the Cauliflower has
a coarse appearance, it is too mature and
should be thrown away.
You can store Cauliflower in a plastic bag
in the fridge for about a week. For long-term
storage, you can freeze or pickle the heads.
Prolonged cooking destroys the majority of
vitamins and 75% of the health benefits are
destroyed after 30 minutes of cooking.

Because of its beneficial effects on numerous

aspects of health, cauliflower can be described
as a superfood. Ten of its most impressive
benefits are:
1. Fight Cancer
Cauliflower contains sulphoraphane,
a sulphur compound that has also been
shown to kill cancer stem cells, slowing
tumour growth. Combining cauliflower
with curcumin (the active compound in
turmeric) may help prevent and treat
prostate cancer. It also inhibits the growth
of cultured human breast cancer cells.
2. Boost Heart Health
Sulphoraphane in Cauliflower has been
found to significantly improve blood
pressure and kidney function.
3. Anti-Inflammatory
You need some level of inflammation in
your body to stay healthy. Cauliflower
contains a wealth of anti-inflammatory
nutrients to help keep inflammation in
check, including indole-3-carbinol, an antiinflammatory compound that may operate
at the genetic level to help prevent the
inflammatory responses.
4. Vitamins and Minerals
One serving of Cauliflower contains
77% of the recommended daily intake
of Vitamin C. Its also a good source of
Vitamin K, protein, thiamin, riboflavin,
niacin, magnesium, phosphorus, fibre,
Vitamin B6, folate, pantothenic acid,
potassium and manganese.
5. Boost Your Brain Health
Cauliflower is a good source of choline,
a B Vitamin known for its role in brain

As
a
society,
our
members
are
predominantly Expats, falling into the
more mature age group, who have made
Spain their home. Feeling that life has
treated us quite well, we would like to give
something back. Since our formation Los
Reyes has supported local charities in the
Mazarrn area.
There are many excellent charities
operating in our area, providing help
and support in many forms from,
Age Concern to various Pet Rescue
organisations, all doing great service within
the community. Los Reyes Golf Society
decided that the main focus, apart from
enjoying playing golf, was to be directed to
an often overlooked group; that of helping

sick and needy children in our area. Since

the Economic Crash of 2007, there are
unfortunately many out there to help.
Our main fundraising effort, the highlight
of the year for us, is our Open Golf Day.
The golf competition itself is a friendly
competitive team event, with all the teams
striving to achieve the lowest score for the
round.
There will be numerous prizes and the day
is rounded off with wives and girlfriends
joining the golfers at a wonderful BBQ
along with music and dancing. As the word
Open says, this event is open to everyone
and all teams are made very welcome.
The day will be supported by a number

of extremely generous sponsors through

gift and monetary donations. Our thanks
on behalf of the children go out to those
wonderful local business men and women.
This year the Open Golf Day is to be held
on 10th October at the wonderful Hacienda
del Alamo course with an after event BBQ
at the fantastic Spaniard Inn restaurant.
To enter a four man team for the event
contact Dave at perry.dave@hotmail.

We are a totally non-profit making
organisation and all monies raised will
be donated on behalf of the members
to childrens charities in and around the
Mazarrn area.

Wednesday 23rd July was a typical Spanish

summer day, with a temperature at

The 21 members and 2 guests who
gathered at The Club House on Camposol

The first tee off was on number 10 at

round most of the course before it got into
the mid-30s.

Not to be put off by the early start, or the

As always August has been a much quieter

or have decided to return to a cooler

Costa Clida Chronicle - September 2016

After a frantic week in mid-July, the future

of Mazarrn FC was secured when a new
Board of Directors was formed just hours
before the deadline for registering the team
in the Preferente Autonomica for the 2016/17
season.
Initially Blas Garcia Garcia, a former
successful player with Mazarrn FC, became
President, but Ruben Martinez then took
over with Blas taking up the position of Vice
President. A new sponsor was announced;
Mazarrn firm Construcciones Francisco
Coy and their Director Miguel Coy became
Secretary of Mazarrn FC. Gerard Mulligan
of Los Amigos de Mazarrn FC will oversee
the financial affairs of the Club with Antonio
Lopez of the Spanish supporters group
Redboys becoming a Vocal.

Another former Mazarrn FC player Cobos

is the new coach and he wasted little time in
bringing a number of new faces to the Club.
In addition, the Los Amigos Player of the
Year, goalkeeper Antonio, signed for another
year as did last years captain and Players
Player of the Year Juan Andreo.

Many of last years squad have departed, but

new signings include former Mazarrn striker
Boudia and three players from La Hoya Lorca,
Mariano, Cesar and Alex Jimenez. Goalkeeper
Julio Gomez from Sporting Saladar in the
Alicante Primera Division is another new

88

signing along with Jorge Brocal previously

with CD Alberca and local rivals Bala Azul.
With so many changes both behind the
scenes and on the field it is bound to take
time for the new team to reach its full
potential and it is hoped that the players
and new administration will be given plenty
of encouragement from the loyal band of
Spanish and expat supporters.
It is important to place on record the
appreciation of all supporters for the
tremendous job the outgoing President Jose
Rodriguez did over the last few years in reshaping Mazarrn FC after a disastrous
period in its history. At times he was a one
man band working tirelessly, first to ensure
the survival of the Club with assistance from
Los Amigos and others and then to turn
things round with promotion back to the
Preferente and just missing out on a second
successive promotion last season.

The new season began a week earlier than

usual on 27th/28th August and finishes on
6th/7th May. Mazarrn FCs first game is a
tough fixture away to Montecasillas followed
by a home game against UD Los Garres.
Mazarrn FCs home games are normally
played on Sundays with varying kick off times.
Los Amigos de Mazarrn FC organise a
supporters coach to most away games. Full
details of all games are advertised in the
local media, on www.mazarronfc.es, on
Los Amigos de Mazarrn FC Facebook
page fb.me/mazarron2016 and on posters
at various points throughout Camposol and
Mazarrn.

which is being made not only by Mazarrn
FC but also by Los Amigos de Mazarrn
FC in ensuring that members have a full and
varied social programme to enjoy in addition
to supporting their favourite local football
club. Whether you are madly interested
in football or just wish to participate in the
social events, just pop along to a meeting for
a chat and a refreshing drink. There really is

Costa Clida Chronicle - September 2016

As the heat of summer approached, our

July fixture was brought forward to the 14th
and 18 members made the short journey
to the course at Camposol.
Cloudy conditions and a light wind made
conditions ideal for our members to show
their skills to the full, none more so than
Dave Gautier who came in with a massive
44 points score off a handicap of just

20. All that practice has proved to be

worthwhile.

Phil Carter came second in Division Two

with the same points score.

Daves score gave him top spot overall and

also in Division Two with Neil MacFarlane
scoring 36 points in second place overall,
but taking top spot in Division One.

Meanwhile in Division Three, Paul Western

was the clear winner with 31 points with
Peter Hansford in Runner-Up place with 29
points.
Nearest The Pin winners were Peter Kirke,
Jim Kinniburgh, Dave Gautier and Dave
May.
Our next Stapleford match is at Lorca on
September 29th and if anyone would like
to join FOGGS or just play as a guest
please contact us by email on info@

In second place in Division One was

Captain Gerry McRobert with 31 points and

August Competition Hacienda

Under normal circumstances Los Amigos
Golf Society (LAGS) take a break during
August. However, this season has been going
well for some and others had nothing better
to do, so a competition was requested and
the committee duly obliged. Hacienda was the
venue and 24 members and guests competed
in a pairs Stableford. When the pairings
were drawn our very own Nostradamus (Fred
Harvey) quite incredibly picked the winning
combination; sadly Ladbrokes refused to take
the bet!

The Presentation Evening was yet another

very well attended event held in The Club
House on Camposol with excellent food once
again provided by the catering staff.

In second place: Ray Reynolds and Les Dryden

with 56 points (on count back from Roger
Olorenshaw and Keith Davis). Now I have to
say that I remember penning Ray Reynolds
name on a number of occasions. However,
this is the first time I can recall announcing
Les Dryden in a winning combination. Well
done Les! A real triumph for tenacity and
determination.

So to the competition winners.

In first place and on the leader board for the
second competition running: Keith Collins and
Graham Thomason (guest) with combined
score of 63 points. (Correctly predicted
by LAGS very own Mystic Meg, Fred the
Forecaster.

The sun shone, the temperatures soared,

the heat became more intense and the
greens got faster and faster. A 2 put was
considered exceptional on the day, a 3 put
quite acceptable and a 4 put the norm!
The searing heat began to take its toll and
we believe that one of our members became
delirious on the course. He was seen kneeling
at the side of a green unable to make his
pencil work while trying to enter his name on
a Nearest The Pin sheet. It was noticed by a
keen-eyed committee man that the sheet was
still inside the protective plastic sleeve! Not
only are the protective sleeves waterproof;
they are evidently pencil proof.
In his
delirium, the member concerned somewhat
incoherently tried to explain I knew that. I
was just trying to see if you are all awake!
It would be unfair to mention this poor mans
name. All I will say is that he has already
been mentioned in this report!

Costa Clida Chronicle Sales 619 199 407

Costa Clida Chronicle - September 2016

Spanish
Property
Sales
still
increasing
According to data provided by the
General Council of Notaries, property
sales in Spain increased by 19.6% in the
first half of 2016. 225,551 transactions
were recorded by the end of June. The
increase was driven by resale properties
at a ratio of 10 resale properties for
every New-Build home. Almost half of
all purchases (45%) were financed by
mortgage loans. However, the Ministry of
Public Works noted that the completion
of New-Build homes dropped by 8%.
Just 17,771 sales were registered in the
first half of 2016; over 1,500 less than
the previous year.
Approved requests for restoration/
renovation of homes increased by 2%.
Over 10,500 licenses were granted
between January and May this year.
Figures recently released by Fotocasa,
a large property portal, show a 0.6%
increase in property values across
Spain. Murcia region is still one of the
cheapest areas to buy property, coming
almost bottom of the table for prices.
Currently, property values in the region
are still 50.4% below their all-time peak
of 2008.

We are pleased to announce we have

signed a deal with a new mortgage
lender, recently arrived in Spain. They
have very acceptable conditions and can
offer up to 110% loans to value on any
property subject to valuation. Equity
release and re-mortgages for home
improvements are also now an option.
Since my last column in which we
identified a slight slow-down in client
enquiries, mostly due to the 14%
devaluation of the pound against the
Euro, things have certainly changed,
with September now brimming with
viewing trips and October looking
likely to be even busier than last year.
Many clients in the past few weeks
have revealed their reluctance to buy
properties in France, Turkey and other
usual sunshine destinations due to
the on-going fears of security. Whilst
this is a sad situation for many people
affected, it appears Spain still maintains
its excellent reputation for holidays and
lifestyle changes for house hunters.

Also according the MoPW, the amount

of unsold new homes has fallen for
the sixth consecutive year. In 2009
there were 649,780 unsold properties
across the country. That figure has now
reduced to 513,000. Many banks are
now offering generous mortgage rates
on the present overhang of remaining
homes as the best locations are already
picked over.

Costa Clida Chronicle - September 2016

Cheryl
Strayed
was born in 1964
in Pennsylvania. In
1986, at the age of
17, she graduated
from High School,
where she was a
track
and
cross
country
runner
and
cheerleader.
For several years,
thousands
turned
to Cheryl, a thenanonymous internet
Agony Aunt, but unlike most Agony Aunts,
this ones advice was spun from genuine
compassion and was informed by a wealth
of personal experience - experience that
was sometimes tragic and sometimes
tender, often hilarious and often heart
breaking. Having successfully battled

lost in life. She is also a public speaker

and often gives lectures about her life and
books and is a long-time feminist activist.
Cheryls work has appeared in numerous
magazines and journals in America,
including The New York Times Magazine,
The Washington Post Magazine, Allure and
The Rumpus. She lives in Portland, Oregon
with her husband and their two children.
Brave Enough Nov 2015
Across the world, millions of people have
found life and depth in the words of Cheryl

Strayed. Whether it has been in her

bestselling memoir Wild or in her collection
of advice on love and life, Tiny Beautiful
Things, she has been a companion to
those who feel alone, a balm to those who
hurt, a co-conspirator to those who laugh,
and a steel-toecapped boot to those who
need tough love. In this courageous and
glittering collection of quotes and thoughts,
Cheryl Strayed shows that no matter how
much life might get you down, words can
have the power to pick you back up.
Wild: A Journey from Lost to Found Jan 2015
At twenty-six, Cheryl Strayed thought
she had lost everything. In the wake of
her mothers rapid death from cancer,
her family disbanded and her marriage
crumbled. With nothing to lose, she made
the most impulsive decision of her life:
to walk eleven-hundred miles of the west
coast of America and to do it alone. She
had no experience of long-distance hiking
and the journey was nothing more than a
line on a map. But it held a promise - a
promise of piecing together a life that lay
shattered at her feet...
The movie adaptation of Wild was released
in January 2015. The film is directed
by Jean-Marc Valle and stars BAFTAnominated Reese Witherspoon, with a
screenplay by Nick Hornby.
Tiny Beautiful Things: Advice on Love
and Life from Someone Whos Been
There - May 2013
Life can be hard: your lover cheats on you,
you lose a family member and you cant
pay the bills, but it can be pretty great,
too. Youve had the hottest sex of your
life, you get that plum job and you muster
the courage to write your novel. Everyday
across the world, people go through the full
and glorious gamut of life - but sometimes,
a little advice is needed.
