CHAPTER I

Introduction

Today, technology is developing very fast around the world. This

technological development (hardware and software) affects our life.
There

is

Educators

because

technology begins to affect teaching and learning facilities. For this

reason, educators are increasingly using technology in all aspects of
their profession (e.g., creating curricula, classroom instruction, work
assignments) This trend can be enhanced by educating the educator
about cultural and cognitive aspects of technology and technikos, as
well as the associated advantages and disadvantages related to
educational and human development goals.
Slide presentation software such as PowerPoint has become an
ingrained part of many instructional settings, particularly in large
classes and in courses more geared toward information exchange than
skill development. PowerPoint can be a highly effective tool to aid
learning, but if not used carefully, may instead disengage students and
actually hinder learning.

Perhaps no other technology resource has had as great an impact

on education as word processing. Not only does word processing offer
high versatility and flexibility, it also is "model-free" instructional
software; that is, it reflects no particular instructional approach. A
teacher can use it to support any kind of directed instruction or
constructivist activity. Since its value as an aid to teaching and learning
is universally acknowledged, word processing has become the most
commonly used software in education. It offers many general relative
advantages (unique benefits over and above other methods) to
teachers and students. (2010, Allyn & Bacon)
In college, many students acquire basic computer skills that equip
them with the knowledge to operate a computer, such as sending
emails,

conducting

Internet

research,

creating

word

processing

documents and creating presentations. The days of textbook only

research and handwritten submissions are over. With the advent of
web-enhanced courses, student must possess basic computer skills in
order to execute commands in basic computer applications. These
basic computer skills help students excel in college and eventually
carry over with them into the workforce. Exercising and advancing
computer literacy skills can also lead to greater opportunities.

Statement of the Problem

1. What is the computer skills of the respondents?
2. What is their academic performance?
3. Is there a significant effect of learning computer such as word
processing PowerPoint and internet?

Significance of the Study

The study of the advancement of technology and its outcomes in
learning helps determine the importance of technology integration in
learning to enhance the students knowledge and skills as well. The
projects goal is designed to help students improve academic
performance and develop skills particularly in operating computer.

Scope of the Study

The scope of this study lies beside determining the impact of
technology advancement on students performance.
