'Saint Teresa of Calcutta'

On September 4, Nobel Peace Laureate Mother Teresa
will be declared a saint at the Vatican by the Pope.
New Delhi: Known to generations
of Indians as a diminutive but
determined woman in a bluebor

poor and destitute, Mother Teresa
is due to become the Roman
Catholic Church's latest saint on

"By blood, I am Albanian. By citi

belong to the world. As to my heart,
I belong entirely to the Heart of
Jesus," once said the Mother, who
came to India in 1929 and stayed
the rest of her 87yearlong life

Trumps hardcore supporters

welcome his immigration policy
New York: IndianAmerican supporters of
Donald Trump have welcomed the Republican
presidential nominee's immigration policy, say
ing it will strengthen his base. "The address
denitely strengthens his base and, we read
that once his message is assimilated by the
Latino population interested in keeping the
illegal immigrants in the USA, his approval
among them will increase somewhat," said A.D.
Amar, president of IndianAmericans for
Trump 2016. "What we read from this policy
address by Trump is that if the illegal immi
grants who have not committed crime contin
ue to live in the shadow, there will be no
rounding up of them by any deportation task
force that he promised to enlarge if elected the
next president," Amar said, commenting on the
major policy speech on immigration Trump
gave in Phoenix, AZ. "We see this as a soften

ing, and showing heart for the immigrants liv

ing in the USA. Nevertheless, he was very clear
that if they wanted path to citizenship, they
will have to go back to the country they came
from and go through the process to be legal
ized," Amar said. Satya Dosapati, a Trump sup
porter who lives in Marlboro, NJ, said Trump's
speech showed he was fair and inclusive. He
called Trump's visit to Mexico "presidential."
"Donald Trump's statesmanship and digni
ed comments in Mexico showed that he is
very presidential and sees issues from a
humanitarian perspective, starting with our
own people," he said. Dosapati said Democrats
need to "stop putting down people of other
races and stop treating them in a patronizing
manner based on their skin color and learn
from Trump on how to treat all people with
dignity."

Facebook's mission to
spread internet fails as
SpaceX rocket explodes
Washington: Facebook's mission to spread the
internet across subSaharan Africa received a
major setback after the rocket due to launch the
communication satellite exploded in routine tests.
The launch, which had been set for Friday faces
significant delays after the blast on Thursday on
the launch pad of the Kennedy Space Center in
Florida, inews.co.uk reported.
Nobody is thought to have been hurt in the
explosion, which occurred in a routine test firing
ahead of a planned launch to take a satellite into
space this weekend.
The cause is unknown and has been put down
to "an anomaly" by the satellite's owner, Elon
Musk's SpaceX company.
The satellite was due to become the first in
Facebook's project to spread internet to the devel
oping world.
But the Amos6 communication satellite, which
would have allowed Facebook to spotbeam
broadband for its Internet.org initiative, and the
rocket have both been destroyed in the blast,
which shook buildings several miles away and
sent a thick plume of smoke into the air.

Florida braces for 'lifethreatening' hurricane

Washington: Tropical Storm Hermine strength
ened into a hurricane and steamed toward
Florida's Gulf Coast, where people put up shutters,
nailed plywood across store windows and braced
for the first direct hit on the state from a hurri
cane in over a decade. The National Hurricane
Centre said the storm's winds reached about 75
mph in the afternoon, just above the 74 mph hur
ricane threshold.
Hermine was expected to blow ashore late
Thursday or early Friday along the state's Big
Bend the mostly rural and lightly populated
corner where the Florida peninsula meets the
Panhandle then drop back down to a tropical
storm and push into Georgia, the Carolinas and up
the East Coast with the potential for drenching
rain and deadly flooding.

The process has speeded up under Prime

which over the past two years has strived
to transform the bilateral ties between
India and the US from just a buyerseller
defense relationship into a deeper strate

New Delhi has stressed the need for joint
research and joint production of defense
equipment. Washington, which has signed
more than 100 such agreements with part

building interoperability between the two
militaries.
Earlier this year, senior military officer
Adm. Harry Harris said at an event in New

United States sought to address Indian
concerns about being drawn into U.S. con

"does not create any obligations on either
party to carry out any joint activity. It does
not provide for the establishment of any
bases or basing arrangements," said the
Indian government statement.
The agreement applies exclusively to
authorized port visits, joint exercises, joint
training, and humanitarian assistance and
disaster relief efforts.
The agreement streamlines relations
between the two militaries, for instance,
allowing refueling without having to come
up with a new agreement each time, said
analysts.
IANS added that the agreement, viewed
as part of the Obama administration's
Pivot to Asia strategy, was criticized by a
leading Chinese staterun daily, which
warned that New Delhi may irritate Beijing
if it "joins the U.S. alliance system.
Concerns over the agreement have been
voiced by political parties in India who say
it will lead to the country being seen as a

During his Phoenix speech, Trump again
resorted to incendiary language after days
of flirtation with amnesty for undocument

that there would not be amnesty for illegal
immigrants under his presidency.
"Our message to the world will be this.
You cannot obtain legal status or become a
citizen of the US by illegally entering our
country. Can't do it," said Trump on
Wednesday. During his 90minute long
speech, Trump railed against illegal immi
grants as a whole for posing a security and
economic threat to Americans, pledging
that "anyone who has entered the US ille
gally is subject to deportation."
W hile professing toug h stance on
deporting any illegal immigrants with
criminal records, however, Trump in a
major departure from his stance in the pri

"deportation force" to deport 11 million
illegal immigrants.
He also continued his promise that a US

Indian Consulate in New York.
Speaking in Hindi, Chouhan said what
was once called a sick and backward state
has shown double digit growth consistent
ly and had won awards not only during the
current NDA rule but also during UPA
regime. The state has good road connec
tivity, 24x7 power, good law and order and
stability, and a government that is working
round the clock for the welfare of its peo
ple. Madhya Pradesh has already realized
exPM Atal Bihari Vajpayees dream of
linking Indian rivers by connecting the
states major rivers like Narmada, Chipra
and others and help bring over 16 lakh
hectares of land under irrigation, the chief
minister stated.
The allround development, stable law
and order and good governance has made
Madhya Pradesh the best destination for
investment, Chouhan asserted. The state
has already attracted investments worth
few lakh crores.
At the consulate event, Chouhan said his
aim is to ensure the bright young boys and
girls of his state have access to education
and are given the opportunities and sup
port to be able to set up their own compa
nies. I want to ensure that Madhya
Pradesh gives India the Tatas and Ambanis
of the future, he said. He called on the
states diaspora settled in the US and
across the world to remain connected with
their roots and continue to bring the two
nations closer with their contributions and
achievements. He also invited all to the
Madhya Pradesh Global Investor Summit
to be held in Indore on October 2223.
Measures taken by the Madhya Pradesh
government to improve ease of doing busi
ness and ratification of the Goods and

bene fits, President of the USIndia
Business Council (USIBC) Mukesh Aghi
said at another event.
The central location of the state, skilled
manpower, robust industries spanning
every sector of the economy makes it an
ideal destination for investment, Aghi
said. During Chouhans visits, MoUs were
signed between the state government and
US firms as well as between private com

ParyushanA soul purifying experience

New York: Jains around the world
celebrated eight days of Paryushan
and Das Laxana Parva from Aug
28Sept 5. This observance falls
normally every year in August
September during monsoon sea
son in India when Jain monks stay
at one place to avoid hurting small
insects during rainy season. They
would give discourses to strength
en the belief, propagate knowledge
and help purify conduct of the lis
teners.
During Paryushan, Kalpa Sutra is
read in the morning. It is one of
the oldest scriptures describing
the life of Bhagwan Mahavir
Swami, the 24the Tirthankar. It
depicts the coming in human life
(Garbh), birth, and life of Bhagwan.
The scripture also tells about Lord
Parshvanath,
Neminath,
Rishabnath, and all other
Tirthankars. In the evening
Samayik and Pratikraman is done
and monks/scholars give discours
es to the devout.
Fasting is done to the extent pos
sible, even by children. On the 8th
day, Samvatsari Pratikraman is
done to ask forgiveness from all
living beings in the universe. The
Pratikraman has recitation of

Logassa, Navkar recital, and repen

required conducts of Jains.
Recitation of 160 Navkaar Mantra
or 40 Logassa is done by all, sit

Next day Parna is done by those
who were fasting. At the end of
Paryushan everyone feels more

Paryushana, this higher level of

consciousness is achieved by read

During Das Laxana, the devout

extend my warm regards to all those observing Paryushan across the

United States and throughout the world.
Paryushan is a time for reflection, humili

universal truth that, in our short time on
earth, each moment we have represents a
chance to take care of one another and shape
a better tomorrow, this sacred festival
reflects the hope and compassion that bind
us in our common humanity.
On this occasion, we are also reminded that
the richness of our world comes from the
vibrant multitudes of experiences, voices, and
origins that define us and from the ability to be true to who we are and
what we believe securely, free from harm, and while knowing the fullest
measure of dignity and respect.
Throughout these eight days, you have my best wishes for continued

Purvi Patel to be released

Washington, DC: An IndianAmerican woman
whose feticide conviction for a selfinduced
abortion was overturned should be released
from prison immediately, a judge said, after she
was resentenced to less time than she already
has served behind bars.
In a brief ruling, St Joseph Superior Court
Judge Elizabeth C Hurley also said a sentence
of 18 months for Purvi Patel was appropriate
for a felony charge of neglect of a dependent
and that Patel does not have to be placed on
parole. Indiana Department of Corrections
spokesman Isaac Randolph said late
Wednesday that of ficials were reviewing the
situation and that Patels release from prison in
the immediate future is possible.
Wednesdays ruling comes less than two
months after the Indiana Court of Appeals
overturned Patels 2015 conviction and 20
year prison sentence on a charge of killing her
premature infant by taking abortioninducing
drugs, saying that the states law was not
intended to be used to prosecute women for

While the idea of a party in the busy

even more amazing is being able to pull

U.S. People are often unaware of
the issues caused by excessive drinking.
Myths about alcohol use in our commu

treatment.
The South Asian Mental Health Initia

addition to other events and programs,
they have created freeofcharge South

On September 17th, 2016, SAMHIN
will be holding a free 3hour workshop

Kansas man jail term
Houston: A 46yearold Indianori
gin man in the US who stabbed his
'overweight' wife twice in the
abdomen has been spared a prison
sentence because the judge agreed
that his family would face
"ostracism" as part of their Hindu
culture.
Navinkumar Patel, from Kansas
City, stabbed his wife with a pock
etknife as she ate a bowl of cereal,
and subsequently told police he
had done it because his wife was
"overweight."
T he cultural considerat ions
weighed into his sentencing deci
sion for Patel, Douglas County
District Judge Robert Fairchild was
quoted as saying by the local
newspaper LJWorld. Patel was
arrested in June 2015 after he
stabbed his wife at Lawrence's
Super 8 Motel, which he owns. He
pleaded no contest to fe lony
charges of attempted second
degree murder and criminal threat
in March. Patel's attorney John

Kerns called the case "unusual to

say the least."
Kerns, told the judge that in the
Hindu culture of Patel's family, his
wife and children would suf fer if
he were sentenced to prison. They
would essentially be "ostracized,"
he said.
"The cultural part of it is very
signicant in this case," Judge
Fairchild said. He sentenced Patel
to probation but will not announce
the terms until next month.
In court, the doctor who evaluat
ed him, Bradley Grinage, testied
that Patel suffers from bipolar dis
order, an illness that was exacer
bated by alcohol addiction.
If Patel stops drinking and con
tinues to take his medication,
Grinage said he is at a low risk for
a repeat offence.
More than a dozen family mem
bers, including his wife, appeared
in court to support him, while oth
ers wrote letters to Judge Fairchild
asking for a lenient sentence.

Trump doubles down on

extreme stand on immigration
Return home and apply for re-entry like everybody else under
the rules of the new legal immigration system, that is the only
route to stay in America, clarifies the GOP nominee,
but waffles on deporting all undocumented.
Phoenix, AZ: Republican presi
dential nominee Donald Trump
has stated clearly that there
would be "no amnesty" for
undocumented immigrants living
in the US and they would be
deported if he was elected in the
November 8 elections.
"For those here illegally today
who are seeking legal status,
they will have one route and one
route only. To return home and
apply for reentry like everybody
else under the rules of the new
legal immigration system that I
have outlined," Trump said while
delivering his major speech on
immig rat ion in Arizona on
Wednesday night,
"There will be no amnesty,"
CNN quoted the Manhattan real
estate magnate as saying.
"People will know that you
can't just smuggle in, hunker
down and wait to be legalized
it's not going to work that way.
T hose days are over," Trump
said.
He did not commit to deporting
every undocumented immigrant
living in the US as he previously
had, but vowed that immigrants
living in the US illegally would
never have a path to legal status
under his presidency.
Trump also pledged to create a
"deportation task force" within

"Maybe they'll be able to

the task force could deport his
Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.
Just hours after meeting with
the Mexican President Enrique
Pena

earlier
on
Wednesday, Trump reasserted
his pledge to build a wall along
the USMexico border and force
Mexico to pay for the wall.

"Mexico will pay for the wall.

100 per cent. They don't know it
yet but they're going to pay for
the wall," Trump said as his sup
porters roared.
The wall, Trump said, will be
"beautiful" and "impenetrable"
and will include hightech tech
nologies to prevent illegal border
crossings.
Trump noted that any undocu
mented immig rants who are
caught crossing into the US will
be "detained unt il they are
removed from our country" and
sent back to their country of
origin.

Washington: Republican presiden

tial candidate Donald Trump has
defended the right of the US to
build a wall along its southern bor
der during his visit to Mexico, but
stirred controversy after his claim
of not having discussed who would
pay for it was disputed by Mexican
President Enrique Pena Nieto.
"We did discuss the wall. We did
n't discuss payment of the wall.
That'll be for a later date. This was a
very preliminary meeting," Trump
told reporters at a joint news con
ference with Nieto after the meeting
between the two leaders yesterday.
The Mexican president did not
respond at that point, but later
tweeted, "At the start of the conver
sation with Donald Trump, I made it
clear that Mexico will not pay for
the wall." Building a massive wall
along the US border with Mexico
and forcing the southern neighbor
to pay for it has been a frequent
promise during Trump's divisive
election campaign. He argued yes
terday that having a secure border
is a sovereign right and is mutually
beneficial for both countries. "We
recognize and respect the right of
either country to build a physical

barrier or wall on any of its borders

to stop the illegal movement of peo
ple,
drugs
and
weapons.
Cooperation toward achieving the
shared objective to both the United
States and to Mexico," he said.
The 70yearold real estate baron
has previously made controversial
statements about Mexico, terming
migrants from the country as
"rapists" and "murderers".
Pena Nieto, who in the past has
compared Trump to Adolf Hitler,
said Mexicans had been hurt by
some of the Republican's comments
but said he believed he now gen
uinely wanted to build relations.
"That there has been a misinter
pretation or assertions that regret
tably had hurt and has af fected
Mexicans and it's perception of his
candidacy of which I am fully
respectful," Pena Nieto said.
"Mexican people have felt hurt by
the comments that have been made.

HILLARY DISMISSES
TRUMP'S MEXICO
JAUNT AS 'PHOTO OP'
Washington: Democratic presi
dential nominee Hillary Clinton
has dismissed Donald Trump's trip
to Mexico as a "photo op" that will
do little to free him from a history
of coarse rhetoric directed at the
US ally.
In a speech at the American
Legion's national convention in
Cincinnati on Wednesday, the for
mer Secretary of State said
America's status as a global power
could be imperiled by Republican
presidential nominee Trump's
intemperate behavior as she cast
the fall election not as one about
ideology, but about who was best
suited to assume the mantle of
global leadership, Los Angeles
Times reported. Clinton declared
that the idea that the US is an

exceptional nation has been a core

be lief that "has guided and
inspired me every step of the
way." Trump, she said, agreed with
Russian President Vladimir Putin
when he criticized that notion as
insulting to the rest of the world.
"No matter how hard it gets, no
matter how great the challenge,
America must lead," she said. "The
question is how we lead. What
kind of ideas, strategies, and tac
tics we bring to our leadership.
American leadership means stand
ing with our allies because our
network of allies is part of what
makes us exceptional." As secre
tary of State, Clinton said she
worked every day to build coali
tions that served US interests and
maintained global stability.

Washington: Three big political

players were facing stiff competi
tion and angry bases.
And all three brushed those
opponents aside with relative
ease Tuesday night.
Arizona's Senator John McCain,
Florida's Senator Marco Rubio
and embattled former Democratic
National Committee Chairwoman
Debbie Wasserman Schultz all
won their parties' nominations to
be elected for another term in
Congress.
It once again shows the power
of the incumbency. Money and
familiarity can be high hurdles to
overcome.
Now, as McCain and Rubio seek
reelection to the Senate, they
have a hurdle of their own
Donald Trump. McCain and Rubio
are favored to win reelection and
are not considered the highest
tier targets for Democrats, who, if
Hillary Clinton wins the presiden
cy, would need to pick up four
seats to take back control of the

Senate. But they are potentially
vulnerable if the presidential elec
t ion turns into a landslide.
Arizona, with its sizable Latino
population, has become more of a
competitive presidential battle
ground given Trump's rhetoric.
McCain is girding for the "race of
his life," say ing in May that
Trump could damage his reelec
tion chances.
McCain, seeking his sixth term,
now faces off in what's expected
to be a tough generalelection
matchup this fall against Rep. Ann
Kirkpatrick. She ran uncontested

in the primary, and Democrats

are excited about her candidacy.
Even Republicans say Kirkpatrick
could be a formidable candidate.
Rubio de feated a wealthy
Trumplike supporter who poured
millions of his own money into
the race. That sets up another key

Asian-Americans playing key role in presidential election

Asian Americans overwhelmingly support Hillary Clinton (66 percent to 23
percent for Trump) as her policies are meant to help immigrants succeed.
By Ajay Jain Bhutoria
illary Clinton continues to hold a
large national lead over Donald
Trump, 50 percent to 42 percent,
weeks after the Democratic National
Convention. Her 8point advantage has virtu
ally remained unchanged since the end of
July. Results from the latest tracking poll
show 87 percent of black voters support
Clinton and that only 8 percent of them will
vote Trump, who is also behind among
Hispanic voters with 22 percent compared
to 73 percent who support Clinton.
I want to point out that Asian Americans
also overwhelmingly support Clinton, 66
percent to 23 percent for Trump.
Several recent surveys show that Asian
Americans are the nations fastestgrowing
racial group. More than nine million of them
will be eligible to vote in November, up 16%
from four years ago. In some key battle
ground states the impact of Asian Americans
will be significantly larger, including in
Virginia and Nevada. In Nevada, they make
up 9% of the electorate, 7% in New Jersey
and in California, almost 15%. Donald Trump
built his campaign on demonizing immi
grants and their families. We heard him loud
and clear the first time. (And the second
time, third time, fourth time). Trump said,
Youre going to have a deportation force,
and youre going to do it humanely. I will
immediately terminate President Obamas
illegal executive order on immigration.
Immediately."
Despite the socalled softening, Trumps
dangerous immigration stance is still the
same. Trump and his team may be trying to
have it both ways, but we take him at his
word throughout this campaign. He has

demeaned immigrants and called for tearing
apart families and deporting 16 million peo
ple.

Helping hand for immigrants

Hillary Clintons policies and fact sheets are
very supportive to help immigrants succeed,
I believe. This election is about the values of
America as a nation. Ask any elementary
school students and theyll tell you the val
ues spelled out in the Constitution or implied
in American culture. Among them: justice,
freedom, equality, democracy, compassion.
These are not values only held by citizens
whose families have been here for genera
tions. Theyre the same values embraced by
immigrants and refugees as they assimilate
into their new country.
For every racist bully, there are tens of
thousands of decent, compassionate, cre
ative, brave, openhearted Samaritans in
America providing a critical mass of kind

ness and understanding to the character of

each and every day. These American values
will be critical in this time of global unrest
for our economic progress and national
security. No other country has it woven into
its fiber the way that we do. This is true
America. Freedom, Equality, Justice and
Liberty for all. It may be that the best thing
that could happen to American values would
be an overwhelming defeat for Trump in
November. It would send a clear message to
the world that the country still does have
faith in itself and its principles, and that
Donald Trump isnt what America is all
about. That would be the optimistic view to
take in a country that seems to have lost its
optimism. Furthermore, on immigration, I
want to elucidate that Hillary Clinton has
vowed to reduce the visa backlog and help
unauthorized immigrants with deep commu
nity ties who deserve the chance to stay.
Applicants from the AsiaPacific region
make up about 40 percent of the family visa
backlog. Some from India have been waiting
for a visa for 1214 years. If youre a US citi
zen and your brother lives in India, it will
take at least 12 15 years to get a green card
for him. Hillary has been strongly fighting
for comprehensive immigration reform to fix
all such issues.

Promoting small business

Next, we cannot ignore the importance of
small businesses that are the engines for US
economy. They create nearly twothirds of
new American jobs, fuel innovation, and
offer crucial ladders to prosperity. But small
businesses were hit hard by the recession of
last decade, and there are still too many
obstacles to success. New business forma
tion has fallen 15% since 2007, and the

Kerry highlights India's role as strategic partner of US

Kerry to head for
China G-20 from India

New Delhi: India is a key strategic

partner of the US with the war
against terror and stability of the
Indian Ocean Region in focus, US
Secretary of State John Kerry said
this week as he interacted with stu
dents at the premier Indian
Institute of Technology (IIT) here.
Kerry, who reached Delhi early
this week, faced Delhi's rain woes
for the second time, as his motor
cade had to negotiate a waterlogged
road right in front of the institute.
He, however, chose to joke about
it and asked the audience in the
almost packed IIT hall if they had
come by boats. "I don't know if you
came in boats or amphibious vehi
cles of some kind," Kerry asked, pro
voking laughter.
His program to visit a few holy
places in the national capital was,
meanwhile, canceled even as the
American Embassy preferred to say
it was "postponed" because of the
torrential rain.
In a lighter vein again, Kerry also
said that the Computer Science pro
gram at the IIT was so competitive
that those rejected here were taken
by institutes like MIT.
At the same time, he chose the
platform to send out a strong mes
sage to China asking it to abide by
an international tribunal's decision
on claims to some reefs and atolls

other countries," Kerry said.
"It is a model how a potentially
dangerous dispute can be resolved
peacefully, including the South
China Sea where the US continues
to call on China and the Philippines
to abide by the tribunal's recent
decision which is final and legally
binding on both parties," Kerry
added. Beijing has rejected the deci
sion by T he Haguebased
Permanent Court of Arbitration
over strategic reefs and atolls in the

South China Sea. The judgment was

in favour of the Philippines.
He also mentioned Pakistan and
stressed it needs to work more
against the terror network there.
"I have had many conversations
with the Pakistan President, Prime
Minister, particularly Prime
Minister (Nawaz Sharif), about how
to focus on sanctuaries in the west

with the Haqqani network, deal
with LashkareTaiba," Kerry said.

that India and the larger region

"We both agreed that nations

she stated.
"We reaffirmed the urgent neces

Pakistan to do more to bring the
perpetrators of the 2008 Mumbai

discussed the need to strengthen
the international legal regime to
counter terrorism.
Kerry said the US continued to
support all efforts to bring the per

"Let me be clear... United States
continues to support all efforts to

and the Pathankot attacks to justice
and we cannot and will not make

terrorism," he stated
"Terror is terror no matter where
it comes from and who carries it
out."
Kerry also said that the two coun

deepen cooperation in designating
terrorist groups at the UN.
To a question on resumption of
IndiaPakistan talks, Sushma Swaraj
said that Prime Minister Narendra
Modi visited Pakistan in December
2015 "and we got Pathankot in
return". "Talks and terrorism can
not go together," she reiterated.
Kerry also said that the US, India

and Afghanistan would hold a tri

would be discussed.
Attacks by the Taliban on Afghan
territory from across the border in
Pakistan would also come up for
discussion, he said.
Sushma Swaraj also thanked the
US for its continued support for
India's membership in the Nuclear
Suppliers Group (NSG) and a per

Council.
"We also had a detailed exchange
of views on climate change and
clean energy issues," she said.
India also raised the issue of hike

Is all lost for Mehbooba Mufti & her party?

By Sheikh Qayoom

he trail of death and

in the Kashmir Valley has dealt a
serious blow to the political base
of the ruling Peoples Democratic
Party (PDP).
T he worst af fected south
Kashmir districts of Anantnag,
Pulwama, Shopian and Kulgam
the political bastion of the PDP
have turned into the party's
Waterloo.
The cycle of violence has left
71 people dead and over 11,000
injured. And most of casualties in
the deadliest unrest the valley
has seen in six years are from the
south. In fact, the unrest started
from there after Hizbul com

in Bamdoora village of Anantnag
on July 8 in a gunfight with the
security forces. Wani belonged to
Tral town also in the south.
W hile violence and public

spread in the valley after Wani's
death, the magnitude of anger
and protests has been massive in
this PDP stronghold. Out of 28

seats the PDP won in the 2014
elections, most were from the
south. Chief Minister Mehbooba
Mufti and her late father Mufti
Muhammad Sayeed themselves
belong to the town of Bijbehara
in Anantnag. In fact, Mehbooba
has won all her elections from
south Kashmir.
But today the space seems to
have shrunk not only for
Mehbooba and her PDP col

leagues, but also for all main

stream politicians. None of the
PDP or opposit ion Nat ional
Conference (NC) MLAs has been
able to hold a single public meet
ing since the unrest started. In
fact, none of these political rep
resentatives is reportedly living
in their homes in these con
stituencies at present. They have
shifted to the safety of their gov
ernment accommo dat ion in

Srinagar or Jammu.
Except for an odd political
statement, all mainstream politi
cians are conspicuous by their
absence from the constituencies.
Anger against the PDP is palpa
ble because the party is in power
and the people blame it for their
sufferings.
Given the proseparat ist
groundswell that followed the
unrest, mainstream politics
especially that of the ruling party
has been confined to of ficial
meetings and drawing rooms.
The separatists, once believed to
be somewhat "sympathet ic
towards the PDP", are today gun
ning for the party.
Known for her soft posturing
towards the separatists in the
past, Mehbooba is now taking
them headon. The Chief Minister
has blamed them for pushing
innocent youths into stone pelt
ing while warning them that vio
lence would yield no positive
result except to bring more mis
ery for the common man.
Under these circumstances, the
PDP is battling anger from the
very people who voted it in as an
alternative to the NC. Logically,

the PDP's loss should have been

the NC's gain. But, given the com
plexities of the Kashmir situation,
this has not been the case.
Former Chief Minister and work
ing President of the NC, Omar
Abdullah, has been issuing state
ments to stage a political come
back in a situation where his
rivals are shrinking fast.
The BJP has decided to contin
ue the alliance with the PDP
despite the alarming situation in
Kashmir. The central government
would not like to intervene by
imposing Governor's Rule in
Jammu and Kashmir because
that would mean removal of the
only political interface between
the security forces and the peo
ple. In the given situation the
only way out for Mehbooba is to
remain in power, work for peace
and normalcy, and then try to
rebuild her personal image as
well as that of her party.
W hile peace and normalcy
remain the main agenda of gov
ernance in Jammu and Kashmir
at the moment, the PDP and
Mehbooba need much more than
good luck to regain lost political
ground in Kashmir.

PRIME MINISTER'S OLYMPIC ROAD

MAP CAN WORK

By Veturi Srivatsa

he only Prime Minister who showed

an apparent interest in Indian sports
before Narendra Modi was Rajiv
Gandhi. It was to Gandhis credit that the
1982 Asian Games could be organised out
without any real hassles as Indira Gandhi
had entrusted the job of overseeing work
on infrastructure to him. It was he who, in
principle, also agreed to India hosting the
Commonwealth Games.
Le ft to two other Prime Ministers,
Morarji Desai and Chaudhary Charan
Singh, the funding for the Asian Games
would have been too tightfisted. The latter
thought the money earmarked for the
Games could have been better spent on
rural reconstruction and wanted the Games
to be conducted on a shoestring budget,
without wasting money on so many new
flyovers to ease the traffic congestions in
the national capital. After the Games, the
flyovers were more in use than the stadi
ums which turned out to be white ele
phants.
Modi's Mann ki Baat on Sunday touched
upon almost all key performances and per
formers. He must have instructed his
speechwriter to cover all aspects of the
Games.
Importantly, he pointed out that some of
the athletes "could not even touch during

Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the Arjuna Award winners in New Delhi. Also seen is

the Games their own performance level
which they had achieved during the domes
tic events".
The Prime Minister sounded serious
about the roadmap for the next three
Olympic Games by calling upon all the
stakeholders to provide inputs to him per
sonally and to the task force he is going to
create for the purpose.
This is another first for an Indian Prime
Minister and his of f hand suggestion to

states to adopt one or two sports can easily

be taken up. With the kind of interest he is
taking, the Olympic road map can work
well and Indian sports persons can really
hope for ache din.
The neverending debate over foreign
and Indian coaches should end with Prime
Minister saluting Pullela Gopichand as a
"great teacher" and his dedication in
becoming a role model, though he did not
mention about overseas coaches. Modi pro

fusely hailed woman power in Indian sport

and congratulated badminton silver medal
list Pusarla Venkata Sindhu and bronze
winning wrestler Sakshi Malik.
He did not forget to compliment all those
who have performed well even if they did
not get the medal and named Abhinav
Bndra, Dipa Kamakar, Sania Mirza and
Rohan Bopanna and Lalita Babar, specifi
cally mentioning about the Indian athlete
who entered the Olympic final after P.T.
Usha 32 years ago. And that the men's
hockey team entered the knockout round
after 36 years just as the women's team
returned to the Games after the 1980
Moscow Olympics!
He talked of boxer Vikas Krishna Yadav
missing the bronze and the performances
of golfer Aditi Ashok, rower Dattu Bhokanal
and archer Atanu Das. They all must have
felt good and encouraged with the Prime
Minister remembering them so fondly and
referring to their good deeds, just as
Sindhu was thrilled to meet him.
Sindhu need not have worried going to
meet the Prime Minister in a skirt as she
was driven straight there from the airport,
though she wanted to change into a formal
attire like a sari or a salwar kameez, per
haps. "Just wish I had time to change as I
was being rushed from the airport," said
her post on social media talking about her
incredible experience meeting Modi.

world problems for customers and
people. The mindset is pervasive,
from defense establishments to
business corporations, and the
author does well to provide a his
torical account of how America
came to be this way. The time stud
ies of Winslow Taylor (18561915,

Even Apple, a shining example of corporate excellence for many, has not
invested in R&D, innovation, factories and productcentric exercises in
spite of having more than $200 billion of cash overseas.
considered one of the first manage
ment consultant) and an overt focus
on imperfect mathematical models
to look at complex reality have been
the basis of this sort of mathemati
cal thinking.
The "efficient market hypothesis"
and focus on unfettered markets for
every problem have caused much of
the troubles that came to rock the
Wall Street in the runup to the
2008 crisis according to the author,
who is also critical of the "markets
know all" approach that has
wreaked havoc on not just the way
business is done but also on how
common citizens live.
Financialization of business has
meant that it is the takers who
called the shots at major corpora
tions, which has actually led compa

nies to not focus on goods and serv

ices but on shareholder returns.
Here, the author also takes up the
example of several of America's cor
porations and financial firms like
GM, GE, and Citibank to reflect on
the kind of decisions 'takers' made
in the runup to the financial crisis.
Though the situation today does
not appear to be similar in India's
case, it does of fer some clues to
Indian companies and markets to
not mimic the American scenario.
The second idea extends the logic
to focus on the financialization of
education. This includes a critique
of business education today. The
author here cites the Chicago
school and influence on both busi
ness education and corporate
America. Also, the fundamental

issues facing businesses are often

those faced by companies which
produce goods and service that are
core to the business.
The author opines that in busi
ness education, the focus today is
on tools and techniques rather than
thinking about real world problems
and how to solve them. This has
meant that most business people
today have backgrounds in finance
and rarely know about products
and processes. This has caused the
paradigm of 'shareholder wealth
maximization' at the expense of
society at large. This also brings in
the related issue of the role of busi
ness or corporation in society. The
author rues how financial thinking
is harming various sectors of the
economy from pharmaceuticals to
automobiles to petrochemicals to
consumer electronics.
Third, there is also the issue of
how America lost its competitive
ness in sectors like automobile,
industrial goods, consumer elec
tronics and the like. Here, the
author brings in the historical view
with Project Socrates of the Reagan
Administration that sought to iden
tify the reasons for the downfall of
American competitiveness.
Apart from costs, offshoring and
the like and not investing in facto
ries, R&D and innovation are seen
as major reasons for the downside.
Even Apple, a shining example of
corporate excellence for many, has
not invested in R&D, innovation,

factories and productcentric exer

cises in spite of having more than
$200 billion of cash overseas.
This again brings us to regulation
and focusing on cutting the loop
holes that businesses use to create
value for just stakeholders but not
society at large where they operate.
This has important implications for
developing countries like India,
where regulation is still not as deep
as it is in the US. Investing in R&D
and innovation as well as factories
by Indian and global corporations
could be seen as a way to improve
Indian competitiveness in the years
to come.
Finally, the book proposes some
solutions for America's current eco
nomic woes. These include simpler
but betterimplemented regulation,
less focus on corporate debt as
compared to equity, rethinking the
role of corporations in society and
building a new growth model where
the focus is on all stakeholders, not
just a few shareholders. The book
ends by recommending empower
ing of 'makers' who produce goods
and services and make the company
and the American economy compet
itive. It can well serve as a lesson
for India to empower its 'makers' to
make its companies, sectors and the
Indian Economy as a whole compet
itive.

Embracing Cloud can help India master digital era: Oracle

By Nishant Arora

ndia is poised to become the

world's leading market for
Cloud, and for US software
major Oracle, Cloud is a forcemul
tiplier that the country must
embrace to leapfrog into the digital
era, a top company executive has
said. India is uniquely positioned to
benefit from Cloudbased solutions
for three reasons. First, there are
more than 200 million connected
mobile users with 100 million on
social media in the country; this
is an essential building block for a
shift to Cloud.
"Secondly, the ecommerce will
ingness in this market. Lastly, India
has the largest IT service business
es in the world across SIs (systems
integrators) and they are now look
ing at adjacent revenue streams
like the Cloud to take cost out,"
Shailender Kumar, MD, Oracle
India, told IANS.

"The government's 'Digital India'

initiative can only be successful if
Cloud plays a key role. This makes
the opportunity huge," Kumar
added.
Cloud computing accounted for
about 33 percent of the total IT
expenditure in 2015 across the
world. In India, the overall Cloud
computing market reached $1.08
billion by the end of last year and
IT/ITeS, telecom, manufacturing
and government sectors accounted
for a bulk of this.
Among one of the first MNCs to
invest in the country nearly 25
years back, Oracle is bullish on
Cloud.
"We are witnessing a strong
demand for our Cloud solutions
here. Oracle's Software as a Service
(SaaS) business is witnessing the
fastest adoption rate with three
segments that have the highest
growth Human Capital
Management (HCM), Enterprise

Resource Planning (ERP) and

Customer Experience led by mar
keting cloud, service cloud, etc.
Platform as a Service (Paas) and
Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)
are fast catching up," Kumar noted.
In April, Oracle CEO Safra Catz
announced $400 million of invest
ment in a technology hub
Bengaluru, with the opening of the
first "Oracle Startup Cloud
Acce lerator" in India's Silicon
Valley. Several more such centers
are slated to be launched later in
Chennai, Gurgaon, Hyderabad,
Mumbai,
Noida,
Pune,
T hiruvananthapuram
and
Vijayawada.
"Oracle is witnessing a huge
appetite for its SaaS, PaaS and IaaS
of ferings in India even without a
physical data center here. Banks,
telecom companies and govern
ment agencies are working with us
and owing to the strong security
infrastructure Oracle provides, we

have been able to dispel security

concerns," Kumar said.
While there are a few regulated
industries that require data centers
in India, there are also customers
who are more focused on choosing
the right applications and plat
forms as opposed to where the
data centre lies.
To alleviate data security fears,
the company recently announced
the "Oracle Cloud at Customer"
solution.
"The announcement strengthens
our play in the market because
companies (including those bound
by regulatory pressures), can now
leverage the Cloud and speed up
their business transformation with
complete control over their data,"
Kumar said.

"W hile there are concerns

India are quite skilled and are
aware of what needs to be done. By
following practices such as segre
gation of duties, ondisk encryp
tion, data redaction and robust
identity management, India can
tackle security constraints," Kumar
pointed out.
The real security issue is when
customers take older products that
were not built for the internet, rack
them and put them on the Internet.
This makes those products vulner
able.
"But sometimes, security is also
used as a reason to avoid change
because shifting to the Cloud
involves change. Though worrying,
companies that adopt the Cloud
can emerge as winners," Kumar

Art & Culture

Many Indias is an ode to

indigenous art forms in the country

The exhibition displayed art forms like Bhil, Gond, Kalamkari, Kalighat, Rogan, Warli, Patchitra,
Saura, Madhubani and Sanjhi art.

diverse culture of India all
came together in an art exhibition
that showcased tribal forms like
Gond, Kalamkari and Madhubani.
Organized by Must Art Gallery
and AK Gallerie, the week-long
Many Indias art show ran at Visual Art Gallery in end August.
Indigenous tribal artists from
all over India showcased the language of 12 different genres of
folk and tribal art of the land,
said curator Alka Pande.
The theoretical underpinnings
of the writings of Ramachandra
Guha, Arjun Appardurai and Dipesh Chakraborty, cultural historians like Jyotindra Jain, Sirish
Rao, Gita Wolf and Ayyappa Paniker led me to conceive the idea of
the show, she added.
The colorful palette with which
these art works are embellished
bear the roots of multiplicity in India. The art works, replete with traditional knowledge, carry the hues
and finesse of ancient art which are
passed from one generation to the
next, the curator explained.
The exhibition displayed forms
of art like Bhil, Gond, Kalamkari, Kalighat, Rogan, Warli, Patchitra, Saura, Madhubani and Sanjhi art. Saura
Artist Manas Das said: As a child, I
was fascinated by tribal art. I painted the walls of a house which was

liked by many and hence took this

as a profession. These exhibitions
give me a much bigger buyer base.
The show was an ode to indigenous art through which the audience sees an inner India and
artists get exposure and promote
their business.
I tried hands on many occupations. A carpenter by trade, I was
not able to make much money and
was uncomfortable with the job,
hence took to painting and these
exhibitions for me are a good
source of income, said Gond artist Shiv Prasad Malviya.
The indigenous art expresses
a view of life which has symbiotic
relationship with nature and is far
removed from the structured and
formal trained language. The visual representation through flora
and fauna drawing ecological balance is an attempt to immortalize
the beauty of nature, said Must
Art Gallery founder Tulika Kedia.
The tribal works at the exhibition, using traditional techniques
of tempera and gouache, made it
more interesting because each of
these works were simple yet ethnically rich with aesthetic sensibility and authenticity.
The audience identified with
the motifs that carry strong symbols from nature and were originally painted in vegetable dyes
and natural pigments.

Diversity in fashion takes the stage

The 22nd Lakme Fashion Week was held in Mumbai last week
By Nivedita

Made in Assam show, northeastern models, stalls from

Arunachal Pradesh, a plussize show, inspiration from Benaras
and textiles from different parts of
India -- the Winter/Festive edition
of Lakme Fashion Week (LFW)
showcased the increasing diversity
in the Indian fashion industry.
The five-day fashion extravaganza that took place at St. Regis in
Mumbai, started with a Gen Next
show -- a platform which launched
currently celebrated designers like
Masaba Gupta, Nachiket Barve and
Rahul Mishra. The 22nd batch of
this platform saw six new talents
showing their creativity.
Day 1 ended with veteran designer Manish Malhotras show
where Sushant Singh Rajput made
his ramp debut along with Shraddha Kapoor, who is now a regular
at fashion runways.
Day 2 saw the best of creativity
coming alive on the ramp with Indian textiles. On a day dedicated to
sustainable fashion and Indian textiles, the event started with a Made
in Assam show titled Halodhi.

Three top designers of the region showcased their work and labels: Anuradha Pedu, Pranami Kalita and Aditi Holani. A stall from
Yana Ngoba Chakpu, an Arunachal Pradesh brand, was a highpoint
of the fashion week.
Two models from northeast also
took to the ramp. Jahnavi Deori, 21,
one of the two models appreciated
their inclusion.
Interestingly, some designers
moved away from western inspirations and focused on Indian textiles
from Benaras and other regions.
Using her key handwoven, specially developed textiles from Benaras, designer Payal Khandwala used
the gold threads that illuminated
the jewel tones on clothes and were
reminiscent of vintage heirlooms.
Ajay Kumar, Another designer,
gave a fashionable ode to Benaras
with a vibrant collection of mens
and womens wear titled Banaras The Golden Dawn of Time Eternal.
Apart from out-of-box creativity
on ramp, Bollywood glamour was
ever-present with the likes of Ranbir Kapoor, Bipasha Basu, Kriti
Sanon, Emraan Hashmi, Dia Mirza, Radhika Apte, Ileana DCruz,
Karishma and Kareena Kapoor.

Yugoslavia, on August 27,
1910. Five children were born to Nikola
and Dronda Bojaxhiu, yet only three sur
vived. Gonxha was the youngest, with an
older sister, Aga, and brother, Lazar.
This brother describes the family's early
years as "welloff," not the life of peas
ants reported inaccurately by some. "We
lacked for nothing." In fact, the family
lived in one of the two houses they
owned.
Nikola was a contractor, working with
a partner in a successful construction
business. He was also heavily involved
in the politics of the day. Lazar tells of
his father's rather sudden and shocking
death, which may have been due to poi
soning because of his political involve
ment. With this event, life changed
overnight as their mother assumed total
responsibility for the family, Aga, only
14, Lazar, 9, and Gonxha, 7.
Though so much of her young life was
centered in the Church, Mother Teresa
later revealed that until she reached 18,
she had never thought of being a nun.
During her early years, however, she
was fascinated with stories of mission
ary life and service. She could locate any
number of missions on the map, and tell
others of the service being given in each
place.
At 18, Gonxha decided to follow the
path that seems to have been uncon
sciously unfolding throughout her life.
She chose the Loreto Sisters of Dublin,
missionaries and educators founded in
the 17th century to educate young girls.

One year later, in 1929, Gonxha was
sent to Darjeeling to the novitiate of the
Sisters of Loreto. In 1931, she made her
first vows there, choosing the name of
Teresa, honoring both saints of the
same name, Teresa of Avila and Therese
of Lisieux. In keeping with the usual
procedures of the congregation and her
deepest desires, it was time for the new
Sister Teresa to begin her years of serv

Mary's, a high school for girls in a dis

Here she began a career teaching his

for the next 15 years.
During the next two years, Teresa pur

"never doubted" was the direction God

was pointing her. She was "to give up

Teresa first went to Patna for a few

by taking a nursing course. In 1948 she
received permission from Pius XII to
leave her community and live as an
independent nun. So back to Calcutta
she went and found a small hovel to

Teresa was not alone for long. Within
a year, she found more help than she
anticipated. Many seemed to have been
waiting for her example to open their

Although Eniath was born and

As an author, she believes it is
"unfortunate" that publishers in

"When I got the of fer from the

For her, the book and its charac

Yogeshwar wants Kudukhov's kin to retain Olympic silver

New Delhi: Yogeshwar Dutt has
made a sporting gesture, saying
that he wants wrestler Besik
Kudukhov's family to retain the
2012 London Olympics silver of
which the Russian was stripped
after testing positive for banned
substances.
Yogeshwar had lost to
Kudukhov in the prequarterfinals
of the men's 60kg freestyle cate
gory at the London Olympics in
2012. The Russian went on to
reach the final which allowed
Yogeshwar to compete in the
repechage rounds.
The Haryana grappler defeated
Franklin Gomez of Puerto Rico,
Masoud Esmaeilpour of Iran and
Ri Jongmyong of North Korea in
the repechage rounds to claim
bronze. However, the World Anti
Doping Agency (WADA) recently

Yogeshwar Dutt.
decided to retest samples from
the 2008 Beijing Olympics and
the 2012 Games which returned
several positive results. Kudukhov,
who died on December 29, 2013,

in a car crash on a federal high

way in southern Russia, may now
be stripped of his silver medal
after his sample also tested posi
tive for a banned substance.

As a result, Yogeshwar's bronze

could now be upgraded to silver.
The 33yearold will now join fel
low Haryana wrestler Sushil
Kumar as the second Indian silver
medalist from the 2012 Olympics.
Yogeshwar however, said that
he remembers Kudukhov with
respect despite his positive dope
test.
"Besik Kudukhov was a great
wrestler. The fact that he failed a
dope test after his death is really
sad. I respect him as a sportsman,"
is the English rendering of what
Yogeshwar wrote in Hindi on his
Twitter account.
"If possible, he should be
allowed to keep his medal. That
will be honourable for his family
as well. Human emotions come
first for me," he added.
The results however, are yet to

be of ficially confirmed by the

United World Wrestling (UWW)
and the International Olympic
Committee (IOC).
Yogeshwar's silver medal will
only be confirmed when the UWW
rat ifies it in writ ing to the
Wrestling Federation of India
(WFI). Kudukhov is considered to
be one of the greatest icons of
modern wrestling.
He was a fourtime world cham
pion across two weight divisions
and had won gold in every World
Championship he competed in
from 2007 to 2011.
He burst onto the international
stage in sensational style at the
age of 20 when he reached the

China. He also became European
Champion in 2007.

Indian tourists at greater cyber fraud risk abroad: Study

New Delhi: More than one out of three
Indians 36 percent share personal data or
sensitive information using public WiFi

Tuesday.
T he 'Digital Detox: Unplugging on

With 36 percent, India leads the pack
when it comes to sharing information online.
"Through this survey, we wanted to raise
awareness about the need to adopt safe digi

Flushing, NY: The roof was closed, then it opened, and

The $150 million retractable roof over Arthur Ashe

Danny Zausner, the COO of the USTA, said the roof
which is comprised of two 800ton fabric panels and
will only be used during inclement weather is
designed for players and fans to feel like theyre in an
outdoor tournament without the weather problems.

It is not really a roof over Arthur Ashe stadium, but

FacebookCEO Mark Zuckerberg is set to unveil his

demo, hopefully next month."
According to Zuckerberg, he credits a lot of the AI's
success to his engineering team at work.
"I programmed it so now, when I walk up to my door,
my gate, I don't have to put in a code or something like
that to get in put in a key it just sees my face and
lets me in," tech website Engadget quoted him as say

thinking of a simple AI to run his home and workplace
like the famous Jarvis character in the Hollywood
movie "Iron Man".
"My personal challenge for 2016 is to build a simple
AI to run my home and help me with my work. You can
think of it kind of like Jarvis in Iron Man," he had post

Connecting to unprotected WiFi and

"With this in mind, make sure to update
your Bluetooth and WiFi history by remov

works, like 'cafewifi,'" the study noted.
Whether it's your location or selfie, crimi

"This can put travelers at risk as they share

India takes a baby step in developing

scramjet engine: ISRO official
Chennai: The successful testing of
scramjet, or air breathing engine,
by India on Sunday is a baby step
in space transportation and would
take more than a decade to have
such an engine to power a full
fledged rocket, said a senior offi
cial of Indian space agency.
"This is a baby step for us. It will
take more than a decade to devel
op an engine to power a rocket.
Currently no other country flies its
rocket powered by a scramjet
engine," K.Sivan, Director, Vikram
Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) told
reporters here on Sunday.
He said the testing of the scram
jet engine is part of India's Make
in India program and Indian Space
Research Organisation (ISRO) has
developed several technologies
like a reusable launch vehicle and
others as a part of this scheme.
On Sunday morning, the ISRO
testfired its scramjet engine fixed
atop its highpowered sounding
rocket RH560. The rocket flew
from the rocket port at Sriharikota
at 6 a.m. Sivan said that the entire
mission lasted just 300 seconds.
Queried about the use of scram
jet engine in ISRO's rockets carry
ing satellites, he said several steps
have to be taken before that.
"The engine that was tested was
burnt only for five seconds. But in
a rocket, the engine has to burn
for over 1,000 seconds. The speed
at which it has to burn would also
vary. We have to conduct various
tests for that before getting ready
an engine that can fly a rocket,"
Sivan said. He said currently
Indian rockets carry a huge quan
tity of oxygen say 200 tons in a

geosynchronous satellite launch

vehicle (GSLV) which gets burnt
during the atmospheric flight
phase of the rocket.
"The scramjet engine will suck
the atmospheric oxygen and use
that to burn the fuel. As a result
the weight of the rocket will come
down drastically which in turn can
be used to increase the rocket's
carrying capacity. T he cost of
rocket will also come down," Sivan
said. According to him, the total
cost of developing this technology
is estimated at Rs 35 crore.
He said the scramjet engine can
be used to augment ISRO's
reusable launch vehicle.
As a part of testing the technolo
gy ISRO tested two scramjet
engines that were hugging the
sounding rocket.
Sivan said: "With this flight, criti
cal technologies such as ignition of
air breathing engines at superson
ic speed, holding the flame at
supersonic speed, air intake mech
anism and fuel injection systems
have been successfully demon
strated."
The scramjet engine designed by
ISRO uses hydrogen as fuel and
the oxygen from the atmospheric
air as the oxidizer.
The test flight was the maiden
short duration experimental test
of ISRO's scramjet engine with a
hypersonic flight at Mach 6.
ISRO's Advanced Technology
Vehicle (ATV ), which is an
advanced sounding rocket, was
the solid rocket booster used for
testing the air breathing engine.
The rocket weighed 3,277 kg at
liftoff.

How Jayalalithaa inched her way to the top

W

hen she entered Tamil cine

ma, she was another strug
gling actress. But luck
and the legendary MGRs blessings
were on her side. Once she was rec
ognized as a cine star, Jayalalithaa
plunged into politics with just one
benefactor in the whole of Tamil
Nadu. And after MGR died, she
emerged out of his shadows to con
solidate herself in a male domain
and became the first woman chief
minister of Tamil Nadu, that too a
Brahmin woman at the helm of a
Dravidian party!
This is probably the most exhaus
tive life story of Jayalalithaa ever
published, at least in English. For
one who doesnt allow intrusions
into her private life, weaving togeth
er the biography would not have
been easy for Vaasanthi, an accom
plished Tamil writer and author. But
vital gaps remain.
Vaasanthi first met Jayalalithaa in
1984 in Delhi, where the writer
lived and where the actressturned
politician had found a place after
MGR put her in the Rajya Sabha.
The first thing that struck me was

Jayalalithaa
with garlanded
statue of MGR,
her costar in
her early years
who became
her political
mentor

her simple and elegant attire and

the fact that she wore no makeup.
One could hardly believe that she
had once been the most sought after
glamour queen of the South Indian
film world.
Yet, here was a young woman who
was sure of herself, even if that con
fidence in part came from her con
troversial proximity to MGR, the
demi God. Having lost her father at a
very young age, Ammu as she was
then known was raised by her
mother, an actress in her own right.
And although studious and with
dreams of becoming a doctor or
lawyer, destiny took her to the film

world anyway. Her arangetram

took place when she was barely 12
the chief guest being Shivaji
Ganesan, the most talented actor
then. Her first movie was
Aayiraththil Oruvan with MGR. It
was a runaway success. MGR and
Jayalalithaa would soon become the
most popular pair he in his early
50s and she in her teens. And pro
ducer R.M. Veerappan or RMV, the
film producer, was determined to
break
this
re lationship.
Jayalalithaas reeltoreal story had
begun. Vaasanthi takes readers
along the numerous ups and downs
Jayalalithaa faced and overcame

died, how Janaki conceded that

Jayalalithaa was the true inheritor
of the MGR legacy, and how finally
Jayalalithaa emerged as the undis
puted queen of the AIADMK as well
as Tamil Nadu politics.
It has not been a bed of roses even
after reaching the top. Charges of
corruption and nepotism have con
stantly pursued her. She has been
accused of being intolerant of criti
cism. And though many credit her
with administrative acumen, the
quality was missing when unprece
dented floods ravaged Chennai. A
once shy girl, who complained about
the looks men gave her when she
went to film studios, eventually saw
male politicians fall at her feet! But
Vaasanthi feels Amma doesnt real
ize how Tamil Nadu has changed
since she first entered politics, how
there is a huge social churning
going on among the youth, and how
new voices are rising in Tamil Nadu
against the two main Dravidian par
ties. Jayalalithaa may have returned
to power in a most unexpected man

Popular with kids, but

beware of crocs
By Akshat Jain, MD, MPH
New York: They are everywhere,
they are colorful, they adorn the
rich and the poor they are the
new clich, but they come at a
price!
Wearable clogs were first
introduced for boat men at
an expo in Florida, for peo
ple who wanted their
footwear to provide a
channel for the water out
let like they would want for
their boats . Boats!
T hey named the pro duct
Crocs after the famed amphib
ians of the Florida water bodies
that are these days found roam
ing golf courses freely.
These wearable clogs, accord
ing to most recent expert
reviews, are not healthy for your
children and certainly not for
you in the manner they are being
abused.
The lackluster Achilles support
in the form of a weak reinforce
ment to the back of your foot
gives way for a wobbly forefoot,
thus leading to tendinitis.

Unfortunately, Crocs are not

suitable for allday use, Dr.
Megan Leahy, a Chicagobased
podiatrist with the Illinois Bone
and Joint Inst itute, told the
Huf fington Post. These
shoes do not ade
quate ly secure
the hee l.

which can lead to tendinitis,
worsening of toe deformities,
nail problems, corns and callus
es. The same thing can happen
with flipflops or any backless
shoes as the heel is not secured.
as reported by the New York Post
recently.
Although crocs provide ade

quate arch support but at the

cost of a misaligned foot that
leads to pain in the heel, frequent
swelling, poor posture, issues
with nail development and cal
lous formation due to misaligned
forefeet are all presenting symp
toms that you are wearing crocs
for too long .
The key word is "long duration"
. When worn for more than 68
hours a day, they have these
detrimental effects.
Especially worrisome
is children wearing
crocs while going to
the mall that have
escalators. There have
been instances and sub
sequently the company
has been sued due to the poor
architecture of these clogs that
have led to trapping of the tiny
tender feet of growing children
leading to serious skin loss and
joint damage.
So I don't advice you to throw
away your expensive crocs but
be mindful of appropriate usage
of those for a better feet, stance,
posture and a confident stride.

Models barely get one fashion

models aren't given their

could be partly because
Indian masses aren't
much aware of models.
When IANS caught up
with the 27yearold sharp featured

grabbing prominence on fashion maga
zine covers, she said: "I think that is part
ly because our masses are not aware of
who the girls are in this modeling indus
try. But I think slowly eople have started
recognizing the fashion girls or models.
"But yes, I think it makes all of us sad
because we aren't given our place in the
industry as you can see that we barely
get one cover in a year. Also people who
work in a magazine know that they have
to pitch Bollywood actresses because
they are beautiful women, they are influ

cover. But I wish that the fashion indus

Men willing to go
green if products
are 'masculine'
Washington: Men are not open to
purchasing environmentfriendly
products as compared to women.
However, they can be persuaded
to go green by branding prod
ucts in a more masculine way,
says a study.
Both men and women find
green products to be feminine
but reframing environmental
products in a masculine way
might increase the possibility of
men endorsing them, the study
found.
Instead of using traditional
marketing messages about green
products (which are typically
perceived as feminine), we
changed the messages to be
more masculine in nature by
changing the phrasing, colors.
When we did that, we found that
men were more willing to go
g reen, said James Wilkie,
Assistant Professor at the
University of Notre Dame in
Indiana, US.
Shoppers who eng aged in
g reen behavior were found
stereotyped by others as more

feminine and also saw them

selves as more feminine, the
researchers said.
Previous research shows that
men tend to be more concerned
about maintaining a masculine
identity than women are with
their feminine identity.
We, therefore, thought that
men might be more open to envi
ronmental products if we made
them feel secure in their mas
culinity, so that they are less
threatened by adopting a green
product, Wilkie added.
In a series of seven studies, the
team manipulated small details
about the products, attempting
to change mens attitudes and
behaviors.
Green products can be success
fully marketed by using more
masculine fonts and colors in
packaging as well as hiring a
masculine spokesmen, which will
explicitly state that the product
is for men only, the researchers
suggested.
The study is forthcoming in the
Journal of Consumer Research.

Tips to avoid getting duped

while buying gold
New Delhi: When you step out to buy gold
jewelry, be wary of getting duped. Check for
purity and hallmark besides buyback policy,
says an expert. Jewelry designer Akassh K
Aggarwal has shared a few tips that can help
consumers avoid getting tricked:
4Gold purity: When it comes to purity,
most gold jewelry has markings inside that
indicate its Caratage. Pure gold is too soft to
use for jewelry. So it is alloyed with a mix
ture of metals like silver, copper, nickel, and
zinc to give it strength and durability. The
most common Carat options are 18K, 22K
or 24K.
4Hallmarkings: All pieces of jewelry are
stamped with the specific karat quality,
called a hallmark. The hallmark is usually
found on the inside part of each piece, and
will indicate the gold content. Every piece of
gold should have a Bureau of Indian
Standards (BIS) hallmark.
The value of your jewelry is determined by
the certification it carries. The Indian gov
ernment has identified BIS as the sole agency
for certifying gold. Ensure that the gold jew
elry you are purchasing has the BIS hallmark
on it.
4Weight: Gold jewelry is usually weighed
in grams. The higher the gram weight, the
more expensive the piece. Heavier, thicker
pieces of gold jewelry also withstand daily
wear and tear, especially in rings, bangles,
chains and bracelets.
4Buyback policies: Ask the jeweler or
salesperson about return policies as to what
amount of labour wastage percentage they

The Bureau of Indian Standards is

of hallmarked jewelry sold through
registered jewelrs and BIS
recognized hallmarking centers.
deduct when you come back to return the
piece and if there are some other ways to
reinvent the old piece of jewelry and by not
selling it off.
4Certificate of authenticity: If you are
buying gold studded with diamonds, having
a certificate of authenticity ensures that you
are purchasing a quality piece of jewelry. It
should also indicate the briefing about the
piece you purchase, so every detail regarding
the product is given on the authenticity card.
4Bills: Retaining a record of purchase is
important while buying and selling gold jew
elry. The invoice doubles as a record of gold
purity. In case of doubt regarding the purity
of gold, the retailer cannot contest the case
after you produce an invoice. A good jeweler
usually demands an invoice when you want
to sell gold.

Benefits of Being A Vegetarian

By Sant Rajinder Singh

the beneficial effects of maintain

Books, journals, magazines, and

dishes at most restaurants.
Natural food stores and vegetari
an restaurants abound in most
cities. Even large grocery chain
stores carry a large variety of
vegetarian foods. T hose who
carefully consider the advantages
of vegetarianism will see that the

quality of their life and health

can be greatly improved on such
a diet.
Longtime vegetarians have tes
tified to the changes they experi
enced when they gave up meat.
Many have reported that they felt
more energetic, not only physi
cally, but also mentally. Animals
that do not eat meat, such as the
elephant, the horse, the mule, and
the ox, are known for their great
strength and endurance. Having
more stamina, vegetarians tend
to exhibit improved ef ficiency
and concentration in their physi
cal as well as intellectual work.
There is an expression, You
are what you eat. In countries of
the East where vegetarianism has
been the diet for thousands of
years, people recognize that
whatever they eat forms a part of
their body and also influences
their thoughts. They believe that
if they eat the flesh of an animal
that the mental and emotional
vibrations or characteristics of
the animal will form a part of

their own nature. Today, science

is researching the effect that our
own stress hormones have on our
body and the damage that long
term stress does to our organs.
Imagine eating animals whose
last days or minutes of life on
earth were drenched with the
hormones released in their state
of fear they were in when they
were about to be slaughtered.
Those who eat meat are ingesting
not only the flesh, but all the hor
mones of stress that are released
due to the animals fear as well.
Thus, many people brought up in
the traditions of the East prefer
to live on plant foods, which are
more conducive to mental
equipoise.
Many enlig htened beings,
saints, mystics, and spiritual
teachers have traditionally advo
cated a vegetarian diet for spiri
tual and moral reasons. For those
pursuing a spiritual path, a vege
tarian diet is essential for several
important reasons. First, spiritual
teachers have always taught that

we are more than just a body and

a mind; we are also soul. They
have also taug ht people the
process of meditation to help
rediscover our true nature as
soul. To help gain proficiency in
the spiritual practices, vegetari
anism is a helping factor. To be
able to concentrate in meditation,
we need to be calm and collected.
If we eat the flesh of dead ani
mals, our own consciousness will
be affected.
In the East, vegetarianism has
been considered essential to spir
itual deve lopment. Spiritual
teachers promote a life of nonvio
lence. Helping factors for spiritu
al growth include developing the
ethical virtues of nonviolence,
truthfulness, purity, humility, and
selfless service. The vegetarian
diet is a natural byproduct of
nonviolence, in which no harm is
done to any living creature. That
is why saints through the ages
have recommended a vegetarian
diet, avoiding meat, fish, fowl,
and eggs.

Vegetarianism also improves

the health of the planet.
Ecologists and environmentalists
are concerned about protecting
the living creatures on earth.
Environmentalists have pointed
out that one solution to the prob
lem of food shortages is better
utilization of our resources. For
example, the amount of grain
needed to feed one cow to pro
vide meat for one person could
feed many times that number of
people. Ecolog ists have also
shown that raising cattle and pro
cessing meat requires much more
fuel, water, and energy than is
used to produce grains and veg
etables.
Vegetarianism is one ef fective
means of conserving our vital
resources.
People around the world are
becoming more enlightened and
concerned about obtaining the
highest quality of life. They are
more interested in solving the
mysteries of the universe and
more keen to find personal fulfill
ment and lasting happiness. We
are simultaneously concerned
about the welfare of our global
community and the preservation
of our planet.
How we maintain the health of
our body, mind, soul, and planet
is a choice each has to make. A
balanced vegetarian diet will
result in improved health and fit
ness, greater mental equipoise,
and higher spiritual attainment.
Following the vegetarian diet can
help us achieve the health and
purity of our body, mind, soul,
and planet. We will not only be
contributing to peace for our
selves and all life, but we will also
be doing our part toward making
Planet Earth a haven of joy and
peace.
Being a vegetarian can help us
attain a healthier body, mind,
soul, and planet. Along with this,
we can augment our wellbeing
throug h
meditat ion.
Vegetarianism prepares the
groundwork for the health of
body, mind, and soul. Meditation
can add to our overall health by
reducing stress to our body and
mind, and can put us in touch
w ith the soul. If we sit in
meditation we can take steps
towards a healthier state of well
being.
