Espaol 2 2016-2017 Seor Ricks: ajricks@cps.edu Rationale: The world is becoming increasingly smaller with advances in technology (i.e. faster and cheaper air travel, cell phones, satellite TV, the internet, etc.). It is advantageous to learn a second language and its cultures which will also help you learn more about your own language. Being able to communicate in a second language is an asset in any career. Materials: Paper, a folder, 2 writing utensils, a notebook, text, and workbook are needed every day. Class Participation: I expect a great deal from Lane Tech students. Students in my class need to have an open mind, a strong work ethic, and be respectful to all. I do not want anyone to speak while someone else is speaking. You must attempt to speak Spanish in class. Each week 25 points will be factored into your grade (5 pts. Per day). This grade is comprised of participation, punctuality, conduct, respect for others, and being on task. Tests & Quizzes: Tests will be announced and are worth more points than quizzes. Quizzes are smaller versions of tests and are given to check a students progress leading up to the test. Both may be announced or unannounced. Some tests and quizzes will be individual and some in groups. Homework: Homework is given almost every day and will be worth 5-20 points per assignment. Projects: Projects are similar to homework but they require more time and are intended to relate the material to our community. Make-up work: Make-ups are for excused absences only. It is the students responsibility for the work missed. Students must arrange for a time outside of class to do a missed test or quiz. Make-up work is due within 2 days after a student returns to class. For example, if John was absent Monday and returns on Tuesday his make-up work is due on Thursday, unless we make different arrangements. Cell phone policy: Electronic devices are to be turned off and put away. Cell phones are to be placed face down on the corner of each student desk at the start of class. Students are not allowed to use their phones during class unless given permission by me to use it for academic purposes. On the first discretion, I will deduct 5 points from the participation grade for the day. On the second violation, I will call home and deduct points. On the third, I will send the issue to the discipline office. Water and Food: Food is not to be eaten in the classroom. Bottled water is acceptable, but please do not distract your fellow students with noise. Grading Scale: A = 90 100 B = 80 - 89 C = 70 - 79 D = 60 - 69 F = 59 and below
