Synod of America do hereby approve and authorize this Interim Edition of The Book
of Common Prayer, and to establish it as the normative liturgy of the Synod, effective
on 29 November 2009, that being the First Sunday of Advent in Liturgical Year 2010.

INTERIM STATUS
This edition of The Book of Common Prayer is authorized for a three-year period
interim use. A final version of the Prayer Book must be presented to the Synod no
later than 1 September 2013 unless, with the bishops permission, a further extension
is granted to the Standing Liturgical Committee to complete necessary work on the
book.
Because this edition of the Prayer Book is intended to serve as an interim resource, it
omits certain elements that will be present in the final edition. As a result:
A limited Liturgical Psalter is provided
The Ordinal is omitted
The Catechism is omitted
A complete Daily Office Lectionary is omitted
Propers for Special Occasions are omitted

SCRIPTURAL BIDDING
One of the following biddings is proclaimed by the deacon or another assisting minister.
Rend your hearts and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is
gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love. Joel 2: 13 (ESV)
The sacrifice God desires is a broken spirit. He will not reject a broken and repentant
heart.

Remember the example of the Prodigal who said, I will go home to my father and
say, Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy
Luke 15: 18-19a
of being called your son.
Let us acknowledge our transgressions, for our sin is ever before us.

The Lord our God is merciful and forgiving, even though we have rebelled against
him. We have not obeyed the Lord our God, for we have not followed the instructions
he gave us.

If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth.
But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to

cleanse us from all wickedness.
CONFESSION OF SINS
When a shorter form of the invitation to Confession is desired, the portions in brackets may be omitted.
Beloved, [the Scripture moves us in many places to acknowledge our many sins and
failings; and exhorts us to neither make excuses for them nor to hide them from our
heavenly Father. Instead, we are called to confess them with humble, lowly, penitent,
and obedient hearts; so that we might obtain forgiveness through his infinite goodness
and mercy.
And although we ought, at all times, humbly to acknowledge our sins before God; yet
we ought chiefly to do so when we assemble together to render thanks for the great
benefits that we have received at his hands, to set forth his most worthy praise, to hear
his most holy Word, and to ask for those things which are requisite and necessary for
us in both body and soul. Thus] I invite you who have gathered here with me, to
accompany me with a pure heart, and humble voice, unto the throne of the heavenly
grace, saying with me:
The assembly may kneel.
Almighty and most merciful Father;

we have erred and strayed from your ways like lost sheep.
We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts.
We have offended against your holy laws.
We have left undone those things which we ought to have done;
and we have done those things which we ought not to have done.

O Lord, have mercy upon us,

for we have offended against you,
and without your aid goodness will never be found within us.
Spare those who confess their faults
and restore those who are penitent
according to the promises you have declared to us in Christ Jesus our Lord,
and grant, most merciful Father, for his sake
that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life,
to the glory of your holy Name.
The priest stands and pronounces the Absolution.
Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who desires not the death of a
sinner, but rather that he may turn from his wickedness and live, has given power, and
commandment, to the apostles and their successors, to declare and pronounce to his
people, being penitent, the absolution and remission of their sins. He pardons and
absolves all those who truly repent, and faithfully believe his holy Gospel.
Let us therefore pray that God would grant us true repentance, and the strengthening
power of his Holy Spirit, that our actions may be pleasing to him, our lives lived in
purity and holiness, and our eternal inheritance found in the company of all the saints
in light. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
In the absence of a priest, the following prayer is offered.
May almighty God have mercy on us,

forgive us all our sins,

Accept, O Lord, our thanks and praise for all that you have done for us.
We thank you for the splendor of the whole creation, for the beauty of this
world, for the wonder of life, and for the mystery of love. We thank you for the
blessing of family and friends, and for the loving care which surrounds us on
every side. We thank you for setting us at tasks which demand our best efforts,
and for leading us to accomplishments which satisfy and delight us. We thank
you also for those disappointments and failures that lead us to acknowledge our
dependence on you alone.
Above all, we thank you for your Son, Jesus Christ; for the truth of his Word
and the example of his life; for his steadfast obedience, by which he overcame
temptation; for his dying, through which he overcame death; and for his rising
to life again, in which we are raised to the life of your kingdom. Grant us the gift
of your Spirit, that we may know him and make him known; and through him,
at all times and in all places, may we give thanks to you in all things. Amen.

Almighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our

AN ORDER FOR HOLY COMMUNION

For use with the Solemn Form of Daily Prayer
When it is desired to append the celebration of Communion to Matins, Diurnum, or Vespers, the
following order shall be observed.
GENERAL INTERCESSIONS
Almighty God, our heavenly Father, you promised through your Son Jesus Christ to
hear us when we pray in faith. In your compassion, hear the prayers we now lift to
you on behalf of your people and the world.
When a deacon is not present, a lector may offer the intercessory petitions.
The assembly may kneel or remain standing.
Strengthen ___ our bishop, his clergy, and all the members of your Church in the
service of Christ, that those who confess your name may be united in your truth, live
together in your love, and reveal your glory in the world.
Lord, hear our prayer.
Bless and guide ___ our president; give wisdom to all in authority; and direct this
and every nation in the ways of justice and of peace; that we may honor one another,
and seek the common good.
Give grace to us, our families and friends, and to all our neighbors, that we may
serve Christ in one another, and love as he loves us. Comfort and heal all those who
suffer in body, mind, or spirit ; give them courage and hope in their troubles; and
bring them the joy of your salvation.
Hear us as we remember those who have died in the faith of Christ ; and, according
to your promises, grant us with them a share in your eternal kingdom.
Rejoicing in the fellowship of [___, and of] all your saints, we commend ourselves

THE OFFERTORY
The assembly is seated.
During the Offertory, a hymn, psalm, or anthem may be sung as representatives of the congregation
bring the peoples offerings (including bread and wine, money, or other gifts) to the deacon or priest.
The deacon or priest prepares the Holy Table for the celebration of the Eucharist.
When all has been prepared, the priest stands at the Holy Table and says:
Be present, Lord Jesus, our great High Priest.

Be present, as you were present with your disciples,
and make yourself known to us in the breaking of the bread.
The assembly shall stand and, where it is customary to do so, those intending to receive Holy
Communion may draw near to the Holy Table.
GUIDELINES FOR RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION

Those with questions about receiving Holy Communion
should see the Guidelines on page 326.

When the Priest, standing at the Holy Table, has so ordered the Bread and Wine, that he may with
readiness and decency break the Bread before the people, and take the Cup into his hands, he shall
proceed to celebrate the Eucharist according to the following form.
THANKSGIVING AND CONSECRATION

The assembly stands.
The Lord be with you.

And with your spirit.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give him thanks and praise.
Eucharistic Prayer
An alternative Eucharistic Prayer, such as the one on page 60, may be used.
Blessed are you, O Lord of heaven and earth. We praise and thank you for sending
your Son, Jesus Christ, as we remember the great acts of love through which he has
ransomed us from sin, death, and the power of Satan:
At his incarnation, he became one with us while remaining one with you.
In his perfect life, he fulfilled your holy will.
Through his passion, he overcame the power of sin and death.
By his resurrection from the grave, he opened to us the gates of everlasting life.
And so, invited by your grace and instructed by your Word, we approach your table
with repentant and joyful hearts, and we humbly pray that you would send your Word
and Holy Spirit upon these gifts of bread and wine. Reveal them to be for us the Body
and Blood of Christ, and through them strengthen us, to live our lives with confident
faith, and to persevere blameless to the end when, at the last great day, we shall feast
with your Son and all his saints in glory everlasting. Amen.
Words of Institution
At the following words concerning the bread, the priest is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the
words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to
be consecrated. The priest may also break the bread at the words he broke it, and may make the sign
of the cross over the gifts at the words This is my body and This is my blood.
Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had
given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: TAKE AND EAT; THIS IS
MY BODY, WHICH IS GIVEN FOR YOU. DO THIS IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME.
Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, TAKE THIS, ALL OF
YOU, AND DRINK FROM IT. THIS IS MY BLOOD OF THE NEW COVENANT, WHICH IS
POURED OUT FOR YOU AND FOR MANY FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS. DO THIS IN
REMEMBRANCE OF ME.
DISTRIBUTION
The priest shall first receive Communion himself, followed by his assisting ministers. He shall then
minister the Sacrament to the people. During the administration of the Sacrament, hymns, psalms, and
anthems may be sung, or silence may be kept. If any of the Sacrament remains, apart from any which
may be required for reservation to serve the sick, homebound, and other legitimate needs, the priest or
deacon shall reverently consume it, either at the Holy Table after the Communion of the people, or in a
reverent location at or after the conclusion of the Divine Service.

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

Let us pray.
Almighty and ever-living God, we thank you for feeding us in these holy mysteries
with the most precious Body and Blood of your Son, and for assuring us through them
that we are living members of his body, and heirs of your eternal kingdom. And now,
Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as
faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor
and glory, now and forever. Amen.
BENEDICTION
The priest offers a benediction in these (or similar) words.
Beloved: May the Lord bless you and protect you;

May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you;
May the Lord show you his favor and give you his peace:

DISMISSAL
The deacon dismisses the assembly in these (or similar) words (adding the double Alleluia from Pascha

FROM THE RESERVED SACRAMENT
For use with the Solemn Form of Daily Prayer
This Order may be celebrated by a deacon or, with the bishops consent, by an authorized lay
Eucharistic minister in the absence of a priest. It may also be used on fasting weekdays (as is the custom
of the Eastern Church) as an alternative to a celebration of the Divine Service.
When it is desired to append the reception of Communion to Matins, Diurnum, or Vespers, the following
order shall be observed.
In peace, let us pray to the Lord.

For the peace that is from above and for the salvation of our souls, for the peace of
the whole world, for the welfare of Gods holy Church, and for the unity of all
Christians, let us pray to the Lord;

That all people, through faith in Jesus Christ, would become children of our heavenly

For seasonable weather in our nation and around the world, for the abundance of the

and for their captors, let us pray to the Lord;

THE OFFERTORY
bring the peoples offerings to the minister.
The minister removes the Consecrated Sacrament from the Tabernacle (or other place of repose) and
prepares for the communion of the people.
When all has been prepared, the minister turns towards the people, saying:

PRAYER OF THE PRE-SANCTIFIED GIFTS

The assembly shall stand or kneel.
Bowing or kneeling before the Holy Table, the minister offers this prayer.
Good Jesus, true bishop and shepherd of our souls, in union with _____ our Bishop,
and all of your faithful servants of every time and place, we gather together,
suppliants at your Altar, in obedience to your command, for, on the night of your
betrayal, you instituted the Eucharistic mystery with the words, THIS IS MY BODY

DISTRIBUTION
The minister shall deliver the Sacrament to the people, then to his assisting ministers, and finally to
himself. During the administration of the Sacrament, hymns, psalms, and anthems may be sung, or
silence may be kept. The vessel(s) containing the Sacrament is then returned to the Holy Table, where it
is once again covered with the white linen veil.
PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

Let us pray.
Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of
your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with heavenly food in the
Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us
strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart. We

BENEDICTION

THE PRESENTATION
___: In obedience to the command of our Lord and trusting in his promise, you have

Baptism that God grants the new life of forgiveness, joy, and peace to little children.
By the power of the Word and the Holy Spirit, this water washes away sin, delivers
from death and the devil, and gives eternal salvation to all who believe.
AN EXHORTATION
You who have brought ___ to be baptized into the family of Christs Church, must

INTRODUCTION TO THE CONFESSION OF SIN
Beloved in Christ Jesus, we are taught in Holy Scripture that all of us, from birth, are
subject to sin, but that God wills all men to be saved, for his full of mercy and
compassion. In Holy Baptism, Christ clothes us with the robe of his righteousness and
applies to us the atonement that he won for us once for all through his death on the
cross. Though our sinful nature no longer need control us, we often, through direct
action, through negligence, or through a lack of concern fall into sin and find
ourselves in need of absolution and restoration. Thus, as we today gather together to
be formed by Gods Word, and to celebrate his Sacraments, let us confess our sins.

INTRODUCTION TO THE CONFESSION OF SIN
Beloved in Christ Jesus, we are taught in Holy Scripture that all of us, from birth, are
subject to sin, but that God wills all men to be saved, for his full of mercy and
compassion. In Holy Baptism, Christ clothes us with the robe of his righteousness and
applies to us the atonement that he won for us once for all through his death on the
cross. Though our sinful nature no longer need control us, we often, through direct
action, through negligence, or through a lack of concern fall into sin and find
ourselves in need of absolution and restoration. Thus, as we today gather together to
be formed by Gods Word, and to celebrate his Sacraments, let us confess our sins.

The Scriptures teach us in many places that Jesus death was the atoning sacrifice for
our sins; the sacrifice which restores us to fellowship and communion with God. Do
you trust the Scriptures when they teach this?

Our heavenly Father has been merciful to us, and, for the sake of the sufferings,

THE PASCHAL VIGIL

This order of service combines elements of Vespers on Holy Saturday and Matins on Resurrection
Sunday. When it is used, those services are not celebrated.
SERVICE OF LIGHT
As the people gather in a darkened Church, they are given unlit candles. At the appointed time, the priest
and his assisting ministers enter into the Church and go to the Paschal Candle. There, they strike a new
fire (either in a suitable receptacle or by lighting the candle itself) and the priest begins the service with
the following bidding.
Dear friends in Christ: On this most holy night, in which our Lord Jesus passed over
from death to life, the Church invites her members, dispersed throughout the world, to
gather in vigil and prayer. For this is the Passover of the Lord, in which, by hearing
his Word and celebrating his Sacraments, we share in his victory over death.
After a suitable pause, the priest offers the following prayer.

EXSULTET
The Exsultet must be sung by a deacon or, in the absence of a deacon, the priest.

It is truly right
that with full hearts and minds and voices
we should praise the unseen God, the all-powerful Father,
and his only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
For Christ has ransomed us with his blood,
and paid for us the price of Adams sin to our eternal Father!
This is our Passover feast,
when Christ, the true Lamb, is slain,
whose blood consecrates the homes of all believers.
This is the night when first you saved our fathers:
you freed the people of Israel from their slavery
and led them dry-shod through the sea.
This is the night when the pillar of fire
destroyed the darkness of sin!
This is the night when Christians everywhere,
washed clean of sin and freed from all defilement,
are restored to grace and grow together in holiness.
This is the night when Jesus Christ broke the chains of death

What good would life have been to us,
had Christ not come as our Redeemer?

VIGIL READINGS
The Celebrant may introduce the Scripture readings in these or similar words.
Let us hear the record of Gods saving deeds in history, how he saved his people in
ages past; and let us pray that our God will bring each of us to the fullness of
redemption.
The readings, psalms, and canticles are taken from the Proper.

When Baptism or Confirmation is celebrated at the Paschal Vigil, the service is adapted to fit the context
of the Vigil, and takes the place of the following Covenant Renewal.
THE COVENANT RENEWAL

After the Homily, in place of the Creed, the following Covenant Renewal is celebrated at the Baptismal
Font.
Through the Paschal mystery, dear friends, we are buried with Christ by Baptism into
his death, and raised with him to newness of life. I call upon you, therefore, now that
our Lenten observance is ended, to renew the solemn Covenant which is rooted in
Baptism and which we are strengthened to keep by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Do you reaffirm your renunciation of the devil, and all his works, and all his ways?
Do you believe in God, the Father Almighty?
Do you believe in Jesus Christ?

Do you promise to abide in this faith?
Do you promise, as a member of the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church, to

May Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given us a new birth

BLESSING OF WATER AT THE FONT

Let us pray.
May this water be a sign of your cleansing power among who have gathered here to
renew their covenant may be strengthened in their faith to continue for ever in the
risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all
honor and glory, now and forever. Amen.
The people may be sprinkled with the water from the font, and hymns, songs, or anthems may be sung.

Let us pray.
O God, you have filled this holy night with the glory of the Lords resurrection: Stir
up in your Church that Spirit of adoption which is given to us in Baptism, that we,
being renewed both in body and mind, may worship you in sincerity and truth. We
ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of
the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
When the Eucharist is celebrated at the Paschal Vigil, the Divine Service is joined at the General
Intercessions (an alternative form of which may be used).

GUIDELINES FOR
THE RECEPTION OF THE EUCHARIST
The Holy Eucharist is the sacramental feast intended to bless and strengthen its
recipients upon the journey to the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Savior and rightly
belongs to all those consecrated to our Lord Jesus Christ through Holy Baptism.
Those intending to receive the Holy Supper must, therefore,
be baptized with water in the name of the Holy Trinity
examine themselves in the Light of Gods Word
sincerely confess their sins to God with a firm purpose to amend their lives
believe that Christ is present, as he has promised, in the Sacrament
The Holy Supper is, therefore, properly received by those whose intention is to
publically profess Christ with a living and mature faith at the solemn occasion of
confirmation and whose manner of life does not contradict the Good News which the
Supper proclaims. All who are confirmed shall be immediately admitted to Holy
Communion, if they have not been admitted previously.
Because the Eucharist is the food of all the baptized, it must be understood that
childlike faith is not necessarily a barrier to participation. Because the gift of the
Eucharist is an act of Jesus Christ in the Church, however, the parish pastor is
responsible to determine when it is appropriate to admit the baptized to the Table.
Our Christian brothers and sisters who are not members of our Synod, but who meet
the four stated criteria above and have been admitted to the Table in their own
ecclesial jurisdictions may be invited to the Eucharist by the parish pastor with the
consent of the bishop.

This rite requires careful preparation by the priest and other participants. It may be celebrated in any
