Be it known that I, by virtue of my authority as Bishop of the Reformed Evangelical
Synod of America do hereby approve and authorize this Interim Edition of The Book
of Common Prayer, and to establish it as the normative liturgy of the Synod, effective
on 29 November 2009, that being the First Sunday of Advent in Liturgical Year 2010.

INTERIM STATUS
This edition of The Book of Common Prayer is authorized for a three-year period
interim use. A final version of the Prayer Book must be presented to the Synod no
later than 1 September 2013 unless, with the bishops permission, a further extension
is granted to the Standing Liturgical Committee to complete necessary work on the
book.
Because this edition of the Prayer Book is intended to serve as an interim resource, it
omits certain elements that will be present in the final edition. As a result:
A limited Liturgical Psalter is provided
The Ordinal is omitted
The Catechism is omitted
A complete Daily Office Lectionary is omitted
Propers for Special Occasions are omitted

INVOCATION

Glory be to the one true God,
and may his mercy and grace be upon us forever. Amen.

SCRIPTURAL BIDDING
One of the following biddings is proclaimed by the deacon or another assisting minister.

Rend your hearts and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is
gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love. Joel 2: 13 (ESV)
The sacrifice God desires is a broken spirit. He will not reject a broken and repentant
heart.

Remember the example of the Prodigal who said, I will go home to my father and
say, Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy
Luke 15: 18-19a
of being called your son.
Let us acknowledge our transgressions, for our sin is ever before us.

The Lord our God is merciful and forgiving, even though we have rebelled against
him. We have not obeyed the Lord our God, for we have not followed the instructions
he gave us.
Daniel 9: 9-10
If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth.
But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to
1 John 1: 8-9
cleanse us from all wickedness.

CONFESSION OF SINS
When a shorter form of the invitation to Confession is desired, the portions in brackets may be omitted.

Beloved, [the Scripture moves us in many places to acknowledge our many sins and
failings; and exhorts us to neither make excuses for them nor to hide them from our
heavenly Father. Instead, we are called to confess them with humble, lowly, penitent,
and obedient hearts; so that we might obtain forgiveness through his infinite goodness
and mercy.
And although we ought, at all times, humbly to acknowledge our sins before God; yet
we ought chiefly to do so when we assemble together to render thanks for the great
benefits that we have received at his hands, to set forth his most worthy praise, to hear
his most holy Word, and to ask for those things which are requisite and necessary for
us in both body and soul. Thus] I invite you who have gathered here with me, to
accompany me with a pure heart, and humble voice, unto the throne of the heavenly
grace, saying with me:
The assembly may kneel.

Almighty and most merciful Father;


we have erred and strayed from your ways like lost sheep.
We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts.
We have offended against your holy laws.
We have left undone those things which we ought to have done;
and we have done those things which we ought not to have done.

O Lord, have mercy upon us,


for we have offended against you,
and without your aid goodness will never be found within us.
Spare those who confess their faults
and restore those who are penitent
according to the promises you have declared to us in Christ Jesus our Lord,
and grant, most merciful Father, for his sake
that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life,
to the glory of your holy Name.
The priest stands and pronounces the Absolution.

Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who desires not the death of a
sinner, but rather that he may turn from his wickedness and live, has given power, and
commandment, to the apostles and their successors, to declare and pronounce to his
people, being penitent, the absolution and remission of their sins. He pardons and
absolves all those who truly repent, and faithfully believe his holy Gospel.
Let us therefore pray that God would grant us true repentance, and the strengthening
power of his Holy Spirit, that our actions may be pleasing to him, our lives lived in
purity and holiness, and our eternal inheritance found in the company of all the saints
in light. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
In the absence of a priest, the following prayer is offered.

May almighty God have mercy on us,

every side. We thank you for setting us at tasks which demand our best efforts,
and for leading us to accomplishments which satisfy and delight us. We thank
you also for those disappointments and failures that lead us to acknowledge our
dependence on you alone.
Above all, we thank you for your Son, Jesus Christ; for the truth of his Word
and the example of his life; for his steadfast obedience, by which he overcame
temptation; for his dying, through which he overcame death; and for his rising
to life again, in which we are raised to the life of your kingdom. Grant us the gift

AN ORDER FOR HOLY COMMUNION


For use with the Solemn Form of Daily Prayer
When it is desired to append the celebration of Communion to Matins, Diurnum, or Vespers, the
following order shall be observed.

GENERAL INTERCESSIONS
Almighty God, our heavenly Father, you promised through your Son Jesus Christ to
hear us when we pray in faith. In your compassion, hear the prayers we now lift to
you on behalf of your people and the world.
When a deacon is not present, a lector may offer the intercessory petitions.

THE OFFERTORY

The deacon or priest prepares the Holy Table for the celebration of the Eucharist.
When all has been prepared, the priest stands at the Holy Table and says:

Eucharistic Prayer
An alternative Eucharistic Prayer, such as the one on page 60, may be used.

Blessed are you, O Lord of heaven and earth. We praise and thank you for sending
your Son, Jesus Christ, as we remember the great acts of love through which he has
ransomed us from sin, death, and the power of Satan:
At his incarnation, he became one with us while remaining one with you.
In his perfect life, he fulfilled your holy will.
Through his passion, he overcame the power of sin and death.
By his resurrection from the grave, he opened to us the gates of everlasting life.
And so, invited by your grace and instructed by your Word, we approach your table

Words of Institution
The assembly may kneel.
At the following words concerning the bread, the priest is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the
words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to
be consecrated. The priest may also break the bread at the words he broke it, and may make the sign
of the cross over the gifts at the words This is my body and This is my blood.

Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had
given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: TAKE AND EAT; THIS IS
MY BODY, WHICH IS GIVEN FOR YOU. DO THIS IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME.
Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, TAKE THIS, ALL OF
YOU, AND DRINK FROM IT. THIS IS MY BLOOD OF THE NEW COVENANT, WHICH IS
POURED OUT FOR YOU AND FOR MANY FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS. DO THIS IN

DISTRIBUTION
The priest shall first receive Communion himself, followed by his assisting ministers. He shall then
minister the Sacrament to the people. During the administration of the Sacrament, hymns, psalms, and
anthems may be sung, or silence may be kept. If any of the Sacrament remains, apart from any which
may be required for reservation to serve the sick, homebound, and other legitimate needs, the priest or
deacon shall reverently consume it, either at the Holy Table after the Communion of the people, or in a
reverent location at or after the conclusion of the Divine Service.

In the Gospels, our Lord Jesus Christ addresses his apostles: If you forgive the sins

The Scriptures teach us in many places that Jesus death was the atoning sacrifice for
our sins; the sacrifice which restores us to fellowship and communion with God. Do

My brothers and sisters in Christ, having been put in mind of Gods just laws and our
need for his mercy, let us now humble ourselves in his presence as we confess our

and forgiveness. After an appropriate amount of time has passed, the people join together in the
following corporate confession, drawn from the Prayer of Manasseh.

Our heavenly Father has been merciful to us, and, for the sake of the sufferings,
death, and resurrection of his Son, he forgives us all of our sins. Therefore, by his

repent and faithfully believe his holy Gospel, the entire forgiveness of all your sins.
On the other hand, by the same authority, I declare to those among this assembly who
refuse to repent and believe that, so long as you continue in your impenitence and

THE OFFERTORY

A PRAYER OF HUMBLE ACCESS

We do not presume to come to your table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own
righteousness; indeed, we trust only in your great mercy. We are not worthy so much
as together up a crumb from under your table, but you are the same Lord whose
nature is always to have mercy and to forgive.

You are the great I AM, existing before the ages and reigning for eternity. Who can

O Master of all, Lord of heaven, and of earth, and of all created things both seen and
unseen: you sit on the throne of glory and look upon the depths; you are invisible,
unknowable, and indescribable; without beginning and without change, the Father of

He is our Hope, the Image of your goodness, the Seal of your Likeness, who reveals

With these blessed powers, O Master and Lover of Mankind, we sinners also cry out
and say: You are holy! All-holy! You, your only-begotten Son, and your Holy Spirit.
There is no limit to the majesty of your holiness. You are revered in all your works,
for in righteousness and true judgment you have ordered all things for us.
When you created man and had fashioned him from the dust of the earth and had
honored him as your own image, you set him in the midst of a bountiful paradise,
promising him eternal life and the enjoyment of everlasting good things by keeping
your commandments.
But when he disobeyed you, the true God who had created him, and was led astray by

THE PASCHAL VIGIL


This order of service combines elements of Vespers on Holy Saturday and Matins on Resurrection
Sunday. When it is used, those services are not celebrated.

SERVICE OF LIGHT
As the people gather in a darkened Church, they are given unlit candles. At the appointed time, the priest
and his assisting ministers enter into the Church and go to the Paschal Candle. There, they strike a new
fire (either in a suitable receptacle or by lighting the candle itself) and the priest begins the service with
the following bidding.

Dear friends in Christ: On this most holy night, in which our Lord Jesus passed over
from death to life, the Church invites her members, dispersed throughout the world, to
gather in vigil and prayer. For this is the Passover of the Lord, in which, by hearing
his Word and celebrating his Sacraments, we share in his victory over death.
After a suitable pause, the priest offers the following prayer.

O God, through your Son you have bestowed upon your people the brightness of your
light: Sanctify this new fire, and grant that in this Paschal feast we may so burn with
heavenly desires, that with pure minds we may attain to the festival of everlasting
light. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
If the Paschal Candle has not already been lit, it is lit at this time from the fire.

EXSULTET
The Exsultet must be sung by a deacon or, in the absence of a deacon, the priest.

THE COVENANT RENEWAL


After the Homily, in place of the Creed, the following Covenant Renewal is celebrated at the Baptismal
Font.

Through the Paschal mystery, dear friends, we are buried with Christ by Baptism into
his death, and raised with him to newness of life. I call upon you, therefore, now that
our Lenten observance is ended, to renew the solemn Covenant which is rooted in
Baptism and which we are strengthened to keep by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Do you reaffirm your renunciation of the devil, and all his works, and all his ways?
By Gods grace, I do.
Do you believe in God, the Father Almighty?
I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

and his entire army in the Red Sea, yet led your people Israel through the water on dry
ground, prefiguring this washing of Holy Baptism. Through the Baptism in the Jordan
of your beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, you have blessed and sanctified the
waters of baptism to be a blessed flood, and a lavish washing away of sin.
May this water be a sign of your cleansing power among who have gathered here to
renew their covenant may be strengthened in their faith to continue for ever in the
risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all
honor and glory, now and forever. Amen.

Let us pray.
O God, you have filled this holy night with the glory of the Lords resurrection: Stir
up in your Church that Spirit of adoption which is given to us in Baptism, that we,
being renewed both in body and mind, may worship you in sincerity and truth. We

the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

GUIDELINES FOR
THE RECEPTION OF THE EUCHARIST
The Holy Eucharist is the sacramental feast intended to bless and strengthen its
recipients upon the journey to the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Savior and rightly
belongs to all those consecrated to our Lord Jesus Christ through Holy Baptism.
Those intending to receive the Holy Supper must, therefore,
be baptized with water in the name of the Holy Trinity
examine themselves in the Light of Gods Word
sincerely confess their sins to God with a firm purpose to amend their lives
believe that Christ is present, as he has promised, in the Sacrament
The Holy Supper is, therefore, properly received by those whose intention is to
publically profess Christ with a living and mature faith at the solemn occasion of
confirmation and whose manner of life does not contradict the Good News which the
Supper proclaims. All who are confirmed shall be immediately admitted to Holy
Communion, if they have not been admitted previously.
Because the Eucharist is the food of all the baptized, it must be understood that
childlike faith is not necessarily a barrier to participation. Because the gift of the
Eucharist is an act of Jesus Christ in the Church, however, the parish pastor is
responsible to determine when it is appropriate to admit the baptized to the Table.
Our Christian brothers and sisters who are not members of our Synod, but who meet
the four stated criteria above and have been admitted to the Table in their own
ecclesial jurisdictions may be invited to the Eucharist by the parish pastor with the
consent of the bishop.

INVITATION TO COMMUNION
The Gifts of God for the people of God.

DISTRIBUTION
The priest shall first receive Communion himself, followed by his assisting ministers. He shall then
minister the Sacrament to the people. During the administration of the Sacrament, hymns, psalms, and
anthems may be sung, or silence may be kept. If any of the Sacrament remains, apart from any which
may be required for reservation to serve the sick, homebound, and other legitimate needs, the priest or
deacon shall reverently consume it, either at the Holy Table after the Communion of the people, or in a
reverent location at or after the conclusion of the Divine Service.
