Overview
Emphasis for this course will be placed on sources and structures in a variety of forms of literature,
critical analysis, independent thought, and positive interaction in a cooperative learning environment.
Students will analyze a range of challenging texts from various time periods, countries, and cultures;
write analytical and well-structured formal written pieces; and apply key media concepts to analyze
media works.
These skills will be explored using a variety of texts and topics in class, though not necessarily in the
order listed. Some of the topics will take a short time, and some will be continuous throughout the
course. We may also cover additional ideas and concepts if we find something exciting that we want to
look at together. Texts may include:
Books/Texts
Romeo & Juliet
Novel Study: FNMI Literature Circles including Indian Horse, Motorcycles and Sweetgrass, and If I
Ever Get Out of Here. Additional titles TBC
Digital short stories, articles, and video clips (including Ted Talks)
Research materials in the school library and on chromebooks as required
Movies
Romeo & Juliet (Zefferelli and/or Luhrman versions)
Slamnation
Textbooks are provided to the student free of charge and are your responsibility. If you do not care for
your textbooks, or if you lose them, you will be required to pay for them at the end of the semester.
Essential Course Components:
To earn this credit, all of the following essential course components must be completed:
1. I reflect on my learning in my reading, writing, media, listening, speaking.
2. I understand different types of texts
3. I understand there are different features that create meaning in different texts.
4. I speak appropriately for my audience.
5. I have generated, gathered, and organized my ideas in order to write my own text.

6. I apply the writing process in order to write clearly.

7. I listen, read, speak and write to make connections.
8. I read/view texts with fluency.

Classroom Expectations: Active reading / viewing notes are expected for most texts and feature films.
Homework exercises are time sensitive and will be used for class discussion and activities on the due
date. This is essential to the development of your critical thinking, knowledge, and communication
skills. In other words, it is imperative that you complete your work on time!
Recipe for Success:
1. Obey the principle of mutual respect. Everyone deserves to have their thoughts and
questions heard and respected. If you want others to listen to you, listen to them. To get respect
you must also give it.
2. Be in class every day, on time, and ready to participate in the days activities.
3. Complete assigned work on time including homework and assignments!
4. Keep your notebook up to date and bring all required materials to class each day.
5. Work hard and do your best each and every day!
Assignments: Since the marks assigned in this course are assessed on a cumulative basis, it is
imperative that work be submitted on time.
Window of Opportunity (WOO): The teacher will determine a window of opportunity within which
you may still submit work for evaluation. Once the final date passes, however, the work will not be
accepted and the assignment will receive a zero.
Missed Work:
It is expected that students complete all assigned work in a timely manner. Students
who are absent on the day of an assessment (e.g. test or presentation) or when an assignment is
due, must speak with their teacher when they return to make arrangements to complete the
required work. Whenever possible, students will inform their teacher in advance of their
absence.
Each assessment will have a final date of submission after which it will no longer be
graded. This date will be clearly communicated to students by the teacher. Work that has not
been submitted by the final due date will be deemed incomplete for the purposes of grade
reporting. Failure to complete all required work will negatively impact a students final grade,
and may prevent successful attainment of the credit.
In addition, students who do not submit work in a timely manner should expect to have
this reflected in the Learning Skills and comments sections of the report card.
Extensions: Sometimes life throws curve balls at us. If extenuating circumstances arise, students may
apply in writing for an extension a minimum of one (1) full day before the assignment is due. The
teacher will decide if an extension will be granted and determine the revised time frame for submission.
Plagiarism: It is wrong to copy someone elses work and pass it off as your own, even if its just
copying a friends homework. This is a very serious offence in the education system and will be dealt
with severely. If plagiarism is suspected, the student will be referred to their Vice-Principal and may be

suspended. Please consult the school planner and/or website for additional information. Further
exercises, worksheets, and a web tutorial will follow.

Evaluation
Term Work - 70%

Knowledge/Understanding, Thinking/Inquiry, Communication, and

Application/Making Connections.

Final Evaluation - 30%

Level 3 (70-79%) is the provincial standard. Teachers, students, and parents can be confident that
students achieving at Level 3 are well prepared for work in the next grade or the next course.
Class work and participation will be evaluated using the following learning skills: Organization,
Independent Work, Collaboration, Self-Regulation, Responsibility, and Initiative.
Cell phones/iPods: The WRDSB has an acceptable use policy for all electronic devices. I run a very
technology forward classroom and expect that students who bring personal devices use them
responsibly. We will use school and personal communications devices for classroom tasks and as
planners, and students will need to show good judgment about appropriate usage of their personal
devices. You are responsible for the safety of your own devices; access to school technology will be
provided. If parents need to contact a student in an emergency, please communicate with the school
through the main office.
Extra help is always available so please let me know if you need help.
