CHIMNEY SCRUBBING
Wet scrubbers remove pollutants by
injecting a solution into the gas stream.
For particulate systems such as dust
scrubbers, the particulate is caught by
water droplets and largely prevented
from escaping through the exhaust pipe.
The system is costly to run.
Considerable energy demands required
to run.
Not highly efficient so cannot be used
as a single solution.

REDUCE ELECTRICAL USE

Use of energy efficient appliances

Changing of habits (a/c heater)

REDUCE FOSSIL FUELS

Reduce dependency on oil, coal
and gas decreasing the amount of
NOx and SO2 emitted.
Use less electricity: less demand on
fossil fuel based electricity
production. (Ex. HK energy mix is
54% coal)
Develop alternative energy such as
wind, solar, hydro.
Cost? Efficiency? Technology?

CATALYTIC CONVERTERS
Require all vehicles to be fit with
catalytic converters.
Difficult to legislate because may
be unpopular due to costs
incurred by public.
Added cost to drivers.
Simple and effective measure to
decrease NOx emissions.

LIMIT TRAFFIC
Legislation / laws to limit the amount of
traffic on the roads.
Road tax or tolls on roads to limit
traffic.
Tax on vehicle purchasing.
May be unpopular with the voting
public / may cause elected leaders to
loose popularity.
May be unfair to certain segments of
society. Only the wealthy can afford to
drive.

UPGRADE FACILITIES
Improve technology for monitoring SO2
levels from factories and power plants.
Improve technology for the burning of
fuels. More efficient burners and scrubbers.
Difficult to get industry on board due to
the increased costs of implementation and
equipment.
Government may subsidise industries to
encourage businesses to upgrade their
facilities (ex. China 2004-2012 drop 70+%)
May save money to industry in the long
term due to increases in efficiency.

LIMING LAKES AND WATERWAYS

Adding CaCO3 (basic) to lakes and
waterways to increase the pH.
Can increase the pH too much and
make water bodies too alkaline.
Costly due to mining, processing
and spraying.
short term solution as it may need
to be repeated if the source of the
problem isnt addressed.

EDUCATION
Depends on the agenda of the
government. Some countries may
not include the topic in their
curriculum.
Education is not universal: Some
countries may not provide
education to students about this
topic or education at all.

LEGISLATION
Depends on the agenda of the government.
Maybe be difficult to introduce because
elected community leaders will loose
popularity with difficult legislation.
Business community may reject legislation
because it puts extra cost or
responsibilities on the business community.
May be lead by international cooperation.
UNEP, UN, CITES
May be difficult to manage, due to
corruption, large scale of area, cost of
policing.
