Orleans House Gallery runs Alternative Education Provision for students

outside of mainstream education. Students are able to work towards a GCSE

Art and Design (AQA) in regular focussed sessions either in small groups or
individually. Young people are guided through the course by Artist Educators
who are able to teach a wide range of artistic skills and have extensive
knowledge of the AQA syllabus. Students are encouraged to expand upon their
personal creative interests whilst learning new techniques and methods in our
professional arts studio. They will learn how to build exciting and effective
sketchbooks/portfolios and have the opportunity to visit exhibitions and access
collections. The gallery is registered to hold official examinations in a spacious,
relaxed environment and facilitate all student administration. Students will
also have the opportunity to celebrate their achievements in an end of year
exhibition hosted at the gallery.
"I was impressed by the GCSE course offered at Orleans House Gallery. My daughter thrived in such a
supportive and inspirational setting. Working in a real gallery with real artists allowed her to fully explore
her creativity and she loved every lesson. We would highly recommend this program to anyone doing GCSE
Art."

Who the programme is for?

The Orleans House Gallery Alternative Education GCSE programme is for young people outside of
the mainstream education system. This may be because they are part of a home-school programme
or due to behavioural, health or other issues. Students should either be entering Year 10 or Year 11,
and ideally have an interest in the arts however past experience is not essential. Our Artist Educators
are trained to work with young people from diverse backgrounds including those with additional
needs.

About the programme

At Orleans House Gallery students are able to work towards

AQA Full Course or Short Course GCSE Art and Design

AQA Full Course GCSE Fine Art, GCSE 3D Design, GCSE Textiles or GCSE Photography

The gallery can work with the student to help them select the best course for them at the beginning
with flexibility to change during the programme.
It is suggested that students attend weekly/regular 2-hour sessions and attend as part of a small
focussed group, however one-on-one sessions can also be arranged. Sessions take place at the
gallery in a professional workshop space and students have the opportunity to use professional arts
equipment and materials.
In the sessions students work on their personal projects based on a title, initially this is based on a
topic of their choice (usually past exam topics) and is later based on a set exam brief. Artist
Educators lead the session, set tasks, give ideas and teach students the necessary creative skills and
techniques. Skills and processes to learn include PAINTING, DRAWING, SCREEN PRINTING,

RELIEF PRINTING, MARK MAKING, INSTALLATION, ANIMATION, BOOK MAKING,

PERFORMANCE, PHOTOGRAPHY, COSTUME DESIGN, VIDEO, SCULPTURE AND
EXPERIMENTAL TEXTILES and MANY MORE!

Homework and additional support

At the end of each session homework tasks and small projects are set for the week. Students are
given advice on how to manage their work load, work independently and where find information
(websites, books etc.). We help students create Pinterest boards about their chosen topic as a way
for discovering and researching new artists and techniques in relation with their topic. Student and
families are also free to contact artists/gallery staff throughout the week with any questions or
concerns.

Course Length
Students can decide whether they wish to sit their GCSE (either Full Course or Short Course) over a 1
or 2 year period.
2 year course
If a student is entering Year 10 and wishes to pursue the arts in the future, a 2 year course is good
option for them to develop their skills and creative practice. The student would be able to build up a
number of sketchbooks where he/she would be able to explore different themes and techniques
across longer period of time.
1 year course
There is also the option of completing the GCSE (Full Course or Short Course) across one intensive
year. Students will need to complete at least 2 full projects and also a series of smaller projects to be
considered for the Full Course, however the gallery has worked with students through a years
course previously and students still achieved high grades.

Examination
Orleans House Gallery is a registered AQA exam centre. The gallerys Exams Officer facilitates the
exam administration and entries on behalf of the students. The students sit their Mock Exam and
Final Exam in exam conditions here at the gallery. Each exam is 10 hours long but can be split across
2 or 3 sessions. The students work is then presented in an exhibition at the gallery for the
moderators visit and which the students can visit with their friends and family.

Programme Benefits

As opposed to other private tuition the gallery is able to see students through the whole
GCSE process, from developing and refining projects to examinations and celebrations.
The programme is very flexible for both students and parents/guardians. Students can
choose to sit a 1 or 2 year course and can choose their desired course title (Art and Design,
Fine Art, Photography etc...)
Students are able to build their creative making skills, personal confidence and knowledge of
art history.
Students are provided with exciting art materials and professional equipment within the
studio sessions.
Students have the opportunity to work in our professional workshop spaces at Orleans
House Gallery and can get special access to our exhibitions and art collections.
As the session groups are small students have the freedom to work on projects which are
personal and interesting to them.
The gallery is able to work with students with additional needs, behavioural or health issues.
Students have the opportunity to go on guided trips to major London galleries.
Students have to opportunity to carry out work experience at the gallery. This may be within
out Education, Exhibitions or Events departments. They can discover what it is like to work in
a creative industry and use the experience to build up their CVs and applications.
