QUESTION 3(20 MARKS|
(a) Explain the necessity of balancing the unbalanced masses for rotating objects.
[3 marks]
(b) Figure 4 shows a system with three weights on a rotating shaft. W; « 40 N @ 90°
at a 101.6 mm radius, W2 = 40 N @ 225° at a 152.4 mm radius, and W3 = 26.7 N
@ 315° at a 254 mm radius, Determine the magnitudes and angles of the balance
weights needed to dynamically balance the system. The balance weights in planes
4 and 5 are placed at a 76.2 mm radius.

QUESTION 4125 MARKS}
(a) Explain the purpose and/or the benefits of the flywheel for the four stroke engine,
[3 marks}
(b) A single acting, single cylinder, four stroke, gas engine develops a 20 kW Power
at 300 rpm. The work done during the expansion stroke is three times the work
done during the compression stroke. The work done during the exhaust strokes is
negligible. If the total fluctuation of speed does not exceed + 2% of the mean
speed, and the tuming moment diagram during compression and expansion is
assumed to be triangular in shape, find the moment of inertia of the flywheel
