Essential Question:
Should learning Indigenous languages be
compulsory?
Over 250 Indigenous Australian language groups covered the continent at the time of
European settlement in 1788. Today, only around 120 of those languages are still
spoken and many are at risk of being lost as Elders pass away. Language is more than
just a way to communicate, it is a vital characteristic that is unique to people and
communities, and plays an important role in creating and maintaining a sense of
identity.
Aboriginal languages and Torres Strait Islander languages are the original languages
of this country. By acknowledging and learning them, all students can gain access to
knowledges and an understanding of Australia that can only come from an Aboriginal
or Torres Strait Islander perspective. Learning about and learning to use these unique
languages plays an important part in the development of a strong sense of identity,
pride and self-esteem for all Australian students.

Assessment Task: Negotiated form of presentation. Maximum

of 600 words or 4-minute oral or multimodal.
As a class we will research the inclusion of Indigenous languages in schools, higher
education and the community. We will explore the various opinions, experiences and
beliefs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community have regarding the issue.
We will also draw on our own personal experiences and opinions during this process.
We will look at and consider the support given for each side of the argument in order
to compose a clear and reliable argument.
You will then decide if you are for or against making the learning of Indigenous
languages compulsory and create a 600-word written piece or a 4-minute oral
response. The focus of the piece will be on your opinion of the issue.
This task requires you to write a 600-word or 4-minute oral or multimodal response.
When creating the piece, you must analyse interviews with Indigenous people to
consider their views and opinions on the matter, and you must locate secondary
sources to strengthen your argument.
All work should be drafted.
