Summative Two
Essential Question:
Should learning Indigenous languages be
compulsory?
Over 250 Indigenous Australian language groups covered the continent at the time of
European settlement in 1788. Today, only around 120 of those languages are still
spoken and many are at risk of being lost as Elders pass away. Language is more than
just a way to communicate, it is a vital characteristic that is unique to people and
communities, and plays an important role in creating and maintaining a sense of
identity.
Aboriginal languages and Torres Strait Islander languages are the original languages
of this country. By acknowledging and learning them, all students can gain access to
knowledges and an understanding of Australia that can only come from an Aboriginal
or Torres Strait Islander perspective. Learning about and learning to use these unique
languages plays an important part in the development of a strong sense of identity,
pride and self-esteem for all Australian students.
