Message to Parents
Welcome to a new School Year! On behalf of everyone at Midnapore School, I
would like to welcome you to the 2016/2017 school year. As a staff, we are
looking forward to an exciting year with our students and their families. Our
MEET GREET and EAT Pancake Dinner on September 1 st was a huge success
and very well attended. From the positive feedback we have received from the
Parent Community, this will continue to become a valuable custom at
Midnapore School.
Thank you to ATCO Utilities for the use of their grills, to Steve Grant for
allowing us to borrow his large tin chaffing dishes from his Black Apron
Cuisine Catering, to the Midnapore School Council for the financial support,
and to the Midnapore community and staff members who supported and
assisted with preparing, cooking and cleaning. The Pancake Dinner was a great
way to meet our students and their families the week before school officially
began!
Our school programs/student numbers continue to grow, so we are pleased to
welcome another new staff member to Midnapore School. Mrs. Cynthia Su is
joining our staff as a grade 4 and grade 4/5 Mandarin Teacher. We welcome
Mrs. Su from Highwood School, one of the north Mandarin Bilingual Schools.
Most staff from former years will be returning to school this year, so there are
very few staff changes.
I know that our new staff greatly appreciated the warm welcome they have
received from returning staff, students and parents. We are all looking forward
to another great year of learning.
Assigned Teachers
Since June, there have been some changes in the number of students attending
our school community. Some families moved away during the summer, while
other families moved in. We currently have over 500 students registered in both
our Regular and our Mandarin Bilingual Programs. We are just over the CBEs
spring projections, an indication that our Midnapore School Community
continues to flourish.
This school year, we have two combined grade 5/6 classrooms, one in our
Regular Program and one in our Mandarin Program, and one combined grade
4/5 classroom in the Mandarin Program. The remainder of our students are
organized into single grade classrooms. Teachers and administrators have
invested a great deal of time and energy into creating class scenarios for the
upcoming year. Our goal is to provide heterogeneous classrooms with a
balanced number of boys and girls who have varying academic abilities,
achievement, work habits, and students who require additional, intentional
intervention. The intent is to create equitable classes that are organized in a
manner that facilitates an excellent learning environment.
We are very excited to announce that our Mandarin Bilingual program is now in
its sixth year of operation at Midnapore, and it continues to grow in popularity.
We have reached capacity in several of our Mandarin Bilingual classrooms, but
if you are interested in enrolling a student in the Mandarin Bilingual program,
please call the school for more information. The CBE begin the process of
deciding where our Midnapore Mandarin Bilingual students will be going for
Junior high. I will share the information once it is made available.
As always, our plans in the spring are made with the best information we have
at that time, and as mentioned earlier, changes occur over the summer requiring
us to sometimes revisit our current classroom organization. I will keep you
informed of any staff or organizational changes as they occur. Thank you for
your patience and cooperation. If you have any questions or concerns, please
call me at the school.

School Supplies
School supplies will be distributed by teachers on the first days of school.
Students are not required to purchase any school supplies. An ISM
(Instructional Supplies and Materials) Fee of $30.00 for grades 1-6 and $15.00
for Kindergarten will be collected to cover the cost of these supplies. A pair of
comfortable indoor shoes would be beneficial, as well as a sturdy, child friendly
backpack.
School Fees and Waivers
Fee sheets are distributed the first week of school and are due in
September/October. All fees can be paid online. There is an option to have the
following fees waived for parents/guardians who meet certain income
guidelines, and/or fall into certain groups: ISM, Noon Supervision and
Transportation. Refer to details on the Fee Waiver Application which is

Student Agendas, on-line Weebly Blogs (teachers will be sending home their
Weebly Blog web address), phone calls, meeting times and notes home are just
some of the ways we as a school will also be communicating with parents.
Once again we will be booking our Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences using
an on line program. More information concerning Conferences will be sent to
you later this month.
At Midnapore we support Progressive Student Discipline:
This is a whole school approach that utilizes a continuum of intervention,
supports, and consequences to address inappropriate and unacceptable student
behaviour and builds upon strategies that promote positive behaviours
contributing to a welcoming , caring, respectful and safe learning environment.
Calgary Board of Educations Student Code of Conduct
Students have a responsibility to not participate in or tolerate bullying and to
report instances of bullying
Parents have a responsibility to ensure their childs conduct contributes to a
welcoming, caring, safe and respectful learning environment
Schools have a responsibility to assess and where warranted investigate and
respond to all reports of bullying
Volunteer Security Clearance Process
Prospective volunteers must first register as a volunteer at the school office.
School administrators will verify your identity and register you in our volunteer
database. You will then be provided with a letter enabling you to obtain a police
information check from the Calgary Police Service (CPS).
The CPS has an online system, electronic Police Information Check (ePIC),
which you will use to obtain your police check after you receive your CBE
7|9
volunteer letter. If you are unable to complete the process online, you may visit
a police information check location instead.
Your security clearance is valid for five years and the $15 cost is covered by the
CBE.
If you applied for your ePIC during July or August, 2016 and were charged a
fee, please save your receipt for reimbursement. Information about how to
apply for reimbursement for this fee will be posted soon. We sincerely
apologize for this inconvenience. New ePIC application fees will be charged
directly to the CBE and applicants will not have to pay up front.
Please note, prospective volunteers must reside in Canada for a full year before
registering. Police clearances from countries other than Canada are not
accepted.
Volunteer Registration
You must also complete the annual CBE volunteer registration form. By
completing the form, you agree to abide by the conditions that protect the
safety, confidentiality and working environment of our schools. You also make
a signed declaration with regard to criminal charges.
