What is a Time Domain
Reflectometer?
Electronic Equipment
Characterize and locate faults in cables
twisted wire repair

coaxial cable

Gaining popularity among industries
ease of use and interpretaEon

What is a Time Domain
Reflectometer?
Able to detect many problems
sheath faults

broken conductors

water damage

loose connectors

How does a TDR work?
Same principle as a radar
transmits pulse of energy down cable

pulse reflects back at faults or cable end (echo)

TDR picks up reflected pulse and calculates
Display shows either wave paSern or numeric distance of
echo

Uses of TDR
Fault locaEon for the Cable Manufacturer
Street LighEng Cable fault locaEon
Fault locaEon on AircraW Fire DetecEon Systems
Measure quality of signal or cables by measuring return loss
Cable fault locaEon in server room

Pros and Cons of a TDR
Pros
accurate

non‐destrucEve

cheap and fast

Cons
ensure calibraEon before every use

limited distance

system needs to be shut down

How to use a TDR?
Ensure cable is isolated
not connected to power source or component

Check far end of cable if its open or shorted
ASach meter to one end of the cable to be tested
Different cable will require the clip to be connected at
different secEons

How to use a TDR?
Set the cable type and Velocity of PropagaEon (Vp) on the
meter
Vp normally stated by cable manufacturer other wise use
meter to determine
