History for this course

Among the courses you took so far, what was the most fun one?

Practices for Automation (1986~2000)

- Pneumatic actuator + Linkage + Sensors

In this course, we wish that you have FUN

while learning & practicing
how to build a Mechatronics System.

Course Overview
First half (before midterm exam): Learning how to use Arduino
Lectures + Lab practices
Second half (after midterm exam):
Examples of mechatronics system

Students Feedback from last year

We listen to you and decided

1. To make the lab easier.
2. To start term project earlier.
3. It takes much time to build a system
(even though its small)
We will provide you with the platform so that you
can focus more on testing your ideas

Location of the Laboratory

Laboratory: Narae Building (N25)
#3328
The room can take only 30 students.

Lecture & Labs

Lecture (@ Creative Learning Building #205)
Wednesday 1~3PM

Lab (@ Narae building)

Wednesday (4~7PM)
Thursday (4~7PM)

Term Project
Two students make one team for term project.
Lab 1~5 will be done individually.
After completing labs, term project starts.
This years theme: automated parking of a vehicle
We will provide you with all the materials needed.
(reduce time for purchasing parts)
What you do is..
1. Assemble the vehicle (LEGO)
2. Connect all the electronics and make sure all sensors & motors work!
3. Think about how to implement automated parking
4. Implement your idea by using Arduino programming

Demo

What is Mechatronics?
Mechanics + Electronics
Traditionally, mechatronics meant simply a system in
combination of mechanical and electronic components.
These days, most engineering products are mechatronics
systems.
Ex) robots, automobile, airplane, smartphone(?), etc
Recent years, Mechatronics implies a design process of a
system consisting of mechanical + electronic components.

Mechatronics Systems
What is System?
Historically, the word system can be traced back to the
ancient Greek era (Plato, Aristotle, Euclid) total, crowd,
union
Scientific meaning was first used in thermodynamics in the
19th century (Carnot, Clausius)
Universe
Environment

TE

Today, it is widely used in virtually every area beyond traditional

science/engineering fields biology, cultural, economic, social,
and cognitive science, management e.g., systems biology,
systems ecology, management systems

Mechatronics Systems
Lets confine ourselves to typical engineering systems
All mechatronics systems are engineering systems.
An engineering system: A process in which input signals are
transformed by the system, resulting in other signals as
outputs.

An engineering system should always have inputs & outputs.
How do you determine inputs & outputs?

Mechatronics System Design

Mechatronics in recent years imply more about design process.

Methodology used for the optimal design of

electromechanical products
Methodology: collection of practices, procedures, and
rules used by those who work in a particular branch of
knowledge or discipline.

Optimal design: High quality, Robustness, Low cost, Time

to market, Customer satisfaction etc.

Mechatronics System Design

Concurrent/Comprehensive/Multi-discplinary design for
products with more synergy
- Concurrent design vs. Sequential design
- Comprehensive design vs. Component design
- Multi-disciplinary vs. Inter-disciplinary
Example) A Robot for Physical Therapy
You want to design a robotic device
(a mechatronics system) for physical
therapy.

Q. What is your strategy to do this?

Possible Scenarios
Scenario 1

Scenario 2

1.

1.

2.
3.

4.
5.

Collect information about

physical therapy of a wrist.
Define design goals
Select actuators and sensors
to meet the goals
Part design and prototyping
Test & evaluation

Team

2.
3.
4.
5.

Make a team consisting of

engineers and physical
therapists
Define design goals
Select actuators and sensors
to meet the goals
Part design and prototyping
Test & evaluation

Q. Which would be more effective?

Q. Do you see differences btn
concurrent vs. sequential
comprehensive vs. component
multi-disciplinary vs. inter-disciplinary

Quality of final Product depends on

the information you collected.

So, what do we do in this course?

Missing parts in Mechanical Engineering Curriculum

Real-time interfacing (Imbedded processor interfacing)

: There are many products from the following companies.
Texas Instruments, National Instruments,
We choose to use Arduino because
: cheap, easy to use,
most importantly many people in the world are using Arduino

What does Arduino do?
