Section I: Read the text and choose the correct answer for question 1-10 below.
Tourism is the worlds biggest industry. It can be one of the most beneficial industries for developing countries because it
brings in much-needed investment. Developing countries have considerable natural advantages, such as sunshine, rich
cultures or national parks, all of which can encourage tourism. Most governments promote tourism and remove barriers to
international and internal travel. For many developing countries, tourism is an important source of foreign currency and
employment. In 1996 the world-wide tourism industry provided 250 million jobs and had sales of $3.6 trillion. In 2006 it
forecasted to provide 385 million jobs and sales of $7.1 trillion. Currently it employs 10% of the worlds workforce. It is also
a popular sector for investment. For example, it is estimated that in Eastern Europe investment in tourist infrastructure will
grow by 290% between 2012 and 2022.
Tourism can also be one of the worlds most damaging industries. In the first place, air travel has made travelling around the
world cheap and easy for those who have enough money, but it is one of the biggest source of atmospheric pollution. In
addition, tourism often leads to the destruction of many places people want to visit. As tourist destinations become more
popular, the governments tend to build more attractive entities such as airports, roads, hotels, nice beaches or museums. This
often takes away valuable resources from the native population, such as clean water, fertile land, etc. The only solution to
avoid these disadvantages is to introduce ecotourism policies, which is encouraging tourists to travel to natural areas (avoid
building entities), which conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people. Another inconvenience of
tourism is that tourists are not always interested in the local culture of where they are staying; they generally treat it as a
source of entertainment rather than as an enriching experience.
