DIESEL ENGINE AND CNG SOME INTERESTING FACTS

With ever increasing energy demand and concern of environmental protection,

clean combustion and reduction in engine emissions using alternate fuels has become
one of the major fields in engine development.. Alternate fuels that aspire to replace
diesel-based fuels include alcohols, liquefied petroleum gas(LPG), compressed natural
gas (CNG), hydrogen, vegetable oils and liquefied natural gas (LNG)..
Gaseous fuels are best suited for IC engines and have a promising future due
to the following specific features:
Mix uniformly with air and burn more completely than the liquid fuels.
Physical delay is almost nil.
Generally build up minimum carbon deposition.
Quantity of contaminating residues is very small.
In particular, natural gas is the most widely used and popular alternate fuel in India
and elsewhere.
WHAT ARE THE FACTS ABOUT NATURAL GAS?

CNG produces low HC and CO2 emissions and negligible SOx and

particular matter (PM) emissions, making it a CLEAN FUEL.

Its high research octane number of 130 means that an engine may be run
at HIGHER COMPRESSION RATIOS without knocking, increasing

its thermal efficiency.

a domestic product

CNG vehicles emit 95% less PM, 90% less CO, 75% less NO 2, 25% less
CO2 than diesel vehicles.

simple HC structure with less C atoms, make CNG a CLEAN BURNING FUEL.

lighter density with respect to air

high self ignition temperature (580 C compared with 210 degrees C for diesel, 400
degrees C for petroleum) make it safe.

CAN NATURAL GAS BE USED SAFELY IN ENGINES?

According to the U.S. Department of Energys Alternative Fuels Data Centre, natural
gas vehicles are ACTUALLY SAFER THAN those powered by gasoline or diesel. The
fact that CNG is lighter than air further enhances its safety.
Fuels such as diesel, gasoline, or LPG which are heavier than air, pool on the ground,
creating a fire hazard. If a CNG leak should occur, the gas will disperse rapidly upwards
into the atmosphere and dissipate.

WHAT ARE THE MODERN TECHNOLOGIES USED FOR CNG CI ENGINES?

1. Engine conversion using spark plug
2.

Dual fuel mode

HOW DOES DUAL FUEL WORK?

CNG is introduced into the engines intake system.

Near the end of the compression stroke, diesel fuel is injected and ignites, causing
the natural gas to burn.
A dual fuel engine can operate on 100 percent diesel fuel OR the substitution
mixture of diesel and natural gas, delivering the same power density, torque curve
and transient response as the base diesel engine.
