ART 4 (The Arts)
I.

Lines
Line is mans own invention. It does not exist in nature. The lines we see in
nature are, on close observation, veins f leaves, the joining of two different surfaces, or
the edges of objects. The artist uses lines to imitate or to represent objects and figure
on a flat surface.
Lines have many qualities which the artist explores. They may be short or long,
fine or thick, heavy or light, wavy or jagged, straight or curved. They usually delineate
shapes. Used across or with n a shape, they give the effect of solidity or create an
illusion of volume, or rough or smooth texture. A series of heavy lines drawn close to
each other create an impression of roughness. On the other hand, a few light strokes
can give a sensation of softness and delicacy.
Kinds of Lines
1. Vertical Lines lines that are at right angle and or perpendicular to a plane.
They carry your eyes upward and create a soaring feeling.

2. Horizontal Lines lines that are parallel to the horizon. They lead your eyes from left
to right or vice versa.

3. Angular Lines lines that have sharp edges. They can be long or short.

4. Curve Lines lines that are without angles. Curved lines are graceful and show life
and energy.

5. Slanting or Diagonal Lines lines that suggest action or movement.

6. Jagged Lines lines that are harsh and unpleasant.

7. Broken Lines a line composed of a series of dashes.
