Issues/ Problems/ Events

The pupils in my class could not speak grammatically correct sentences.
Thoughts And View Regarding The Issues/ Problems/ Events
I realised that a mojority of the pupils in my class could not speak sentences with

correct grammar.
This problems were obvious during Q&A sessions. Asking questions is one of

the strategies in my English lesson and I discovered that pupils could

understand the questions but could not respond fully in English. They often

responded in Malay or Chinese.

Pupils tend to use phrases instead of sentences to respond to my questions or

they often make grammar mistakes when they tried to respond in English.
Analysis Of Issue/ Problems/ Events
3.1 Causes
Low English proficiency
Influence of mother tongue
Lack of confidence
3.2 Strengths/ Weaknesses
Lesson could not be conducted fully in English.
3.3 Predicted Effects/ Outcomes (If No Actions Were Taken)
Pupils tend to be dependent on languages other than English.
Writing skills will be affected if pupils could not even speak grammatically correct

sentences.
Objective of the lesson failed to achieve.
Suggestions To Overcome The Causes/ Weaknesses
I tried not to use Malay or Chinese in my lesson to encourage pupils to speak in
English. It was important to bear in mind that it was only during English class
that the pupils have the opportunity to listen and speak English so it is our
responsibility as English teacher to immerse them in English environment as

much as possible.
I will correct pupils whenever I realized that they commit grammar mistakes in
giving their answers. I will always provide opportunity for the particular pupil or
whole class to repeat the correct sentences. Sometimes, I may need to note
down the common errors and draw the attention of pupils to avoid the recurring

errors.
In order to get the pupils to be interested in upholding the level of English
proficiency, I need to vary class activities to make my lessons more interesting
and fun. I need to conduct activities that encourage pupils to speak in English
such communicative games, information gap, role play, round robin and

structured dialogues.
As a teacher, I need to be a good model for pupils to imitate. I have to make
sure my own spoken English is free from grammar mistakes and use the correct

pronunciation, intonation, stress and rhythmn.

Since a majority of pupils in this class are of low English proficiency, I have to
encourage pupils who seem speaking English is difficult for them and simplify

the task for them when necessary.
