probetas Small Punch entalladas.

ABSTRACT
The Small Punch Test has reached an important level of development in the last few decades. The test has been
successfully used in the characterization of tensile properties, for estimating creep properties or for evaluating the
embrittlement level of steels subjected, for example, to neutron irradiation. Regarding fracture toughness estimation of
metallic materials by means of Small Punch tests, there are many available methodologies, but most of them are very
complex, and for most of real applications are not easy to implement.
In this work a new methodology for the estimation of fracture toughness based on the use of notched Small Punch
specimens is proposed. This method is simply based on a direct observation of notch tip opening displacement, and then
correlating this measurement at the moment of crack initiation with critical CTOD value obtained by conventional
fracture toughness tests. This approach has been developed by testing five different structural steels, selected in a wide
range of microstructures and mechanical resistances.
