The name of this surah, Al-Falaq, is often

translated as the daybreak or dawn. However,
the Messenger of Allah would often use
another name when he talked about this
surah.

The Messenger of Allah would call Surah Al-

Falaq and Suran Al-Nas together by the name
the Mu’awwidhatan.

This means the two refuge seekers. Refuge

means a place of safety and seek means to
look for. So these are two surahs that we recite
when we are looking for Allah’s protection,
when we want Him to make us safe.

The Messenger of Allah used to often recite

these two surahs to seek Allah’s protection. He
told his companion ‘Uqbah:

“O ‘Uqbah! Seek refuge with them, for none

who seek refuge can do so with

anything equal to them!”2

This means that for seeking protection you

can’t find anything that is equal to these two
surahs.

These two surahs may be used for any time

when you feel scared or your fear that some
harm might come to you.

They remind us to put our trust in Allah and to

always seek His protection and refuge.
