As I begin to type this, I am remembering that it has been fifteen years since
the day we know as nine-eleven happened. On that day I was headed to San
Antonio for an education opportunity and was listening on the radio as the
events took place. When I arrived in San Antonio I found out the opportunity
was canceled because of what was happening. I was able to 'enjoy' several days
in San Antonio and have a leisurely drive back home. I remember the following
weekend I was at a parish east of Dallas visiting some friends and celebrating a
Mass. I spoke about forgiveness because the readings were connected to that
theme. Several years ago I spoke again about forgiveness and how we need to
forgive those who harm us. One of the parishioners implied that the ones who
are terrorists do not deserve forgiveness. The question I ask is: in this case, is the
forgiveness for them or for our own spiritual health. A 'saying' that I have seen
recently says holding a grudge is like
taking poison and hoping that the other
person dies. If we hold in our hearts the
idea that someone has hurt us, we are in
fact hurting ourselves. The 'prodigal son'
was hurting himself more the longer he
stayed away from his father. He finally
decided to go and reconcile and that is
when we see the reward of his efforts.
...he was lost and has been found. There
may be times in our life when we are lost
in our own vengeance or are holding a
grudge. Those are the times when we can
come to our senses and recognize that
there is a better way. God forgives; we can
also forgive.
