American Romanticism

American Romanticism was an artistic move in literature in the 19th century that
consisted of emotion, despair of love, and nature. In The Devil and Tom Walker, tells a story
of a man who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for great amount of wealth. After swindling
money from money until he is old, the devil comes with a black horse and takes him. In the short
story, there are a distinct of events which enable a doubt of American Romanticism.
A sector idea of Romanticism is to analyze the innermore nature of a man. In this story, it
focuses on the inner nature of Tom Walker, who is the main character of this story. Tom struggles
in his own greed and desire, and because of that, we see the negative structures when he deplete
his suffering. Toms desire for money and personal started to spring up. In the story, the audience
see the change that is happening to Tom. He fights the change in the beginning but later gives in
his greed which led to the death of his wife.
The supernatural event is indisputable in the short story. The elements of the supernatural
event suit to emotional mental desire than to have a reason. In the story, the devil offers to
answer Tom and his wife`s problem that they are facing. He gives answers that the couple would
imagine and reality would not offer. The devil offers a chance to let the couple to explore their
imagination. The devil shows an romantic element to the story for the love of his stature and his
legacy.
The Devil in the story would also not give mercy and that would give the masochist
satire that is mentioned with Toms wife and her greed. She will do anything in order to have a
better and peaceful life even if it is to leave your husband who cared for you,
