Another school week has flown by and we now find ourselves heading
towards acouple oflongweekends.Again,an opportunitytorechargeand
spendsometimetogetherwithfriendsandfamilymakethemostofit.

Its been a good week. Students are, as always, making the most of
opportunities andbusy working hardinlessons.Imfindingmoreandmore
evidence that studentsarerespondingtomyneed for themtoaskmorequestions.Itwilltake
time a numberof ourstudentsstillneed reprogramming. Somearesimplynot used to this
needforthem toengagewithteachersand their learning. To some, its analienconceptand
because its new, they're cautious and thats understandable. As Ive said before, students
make the most progress in lessonswheretheyfeel safe totake risks, ask good questions and
are provided with opportunitiesto think for themselvesandexplorewhattheyknowandwhat
theydont.Our studentsneedtodiscoverforthemselveswhattheydontunderstandandthey

We had a fantastic assembly this week, the entire assembly led by the students. They
introduced the leadersoftheschoolthe Prefects,andoutlinedtheyearahead,encouraging

Staff are continuing to workveryhardandtheresalottobeexcitedaboutatthemoment.We

have aseriesofincredible tripscoming up andthe signupratehasbeenveryencouraging. Its
opportunities like these that set us apart from other schools. Children want to attend these
trips andmake new memoriesthat willshapewhotheybecome. Itcan sometimesbedifficult
as a parent to let go and trust thatthingswillbe okonthesetrips. I dounderstand, butits
experiences like these that they will still be talking about in years to come. They will grow,

Im back in classrooms again next week and will be focusing more on the teaching thats

The big news this week is the letter that was sent toallyear9 to13 parentsaskingthem to

power of these devices for learning, and hope that as students bring in more of their own

The students are not theonly oneslearning at Uplands.Lastweek ourfirst groupofteachers

update:

OnThursday, 1September, 16UplandsPrimary andSecondaryteacherstook part in thefirst

session ofthe Google EducatorCertificationLevel 1 program. Theteacherscompletedthefirst
of 13 units that will help them learn more about Google Apps for Education (GAFE) and to
determinehowtobestfitmoretechnologyintotheirlessons.Duetoschedulingconflicts,some
teachers weren't able to attend, but are interested in completing the units on their own to
prepare for the exam that will take place at the end of Term 1. Itisexciting tosee teachers

Finally, I had the pleasure of talking to Mr. Stevenson, Secondary Music teacher, this week

OurrecentIB Retreatwas agreatsuccess,notwithstandinga

concern oversometemporaryupset stomachs onourreturn

of our retreat with some written excerpts from ourcurrent
Year12 IBDPcohort.Whatanamazinggroupofyoungadults
they are! I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to
work with them and to be part of their learning journey.
Here are some reflections which they handed in after the
trip:

Overall, the trip gave usanenriching experience, onethat

will remain etched in our memories. The whole purpose of
this trip is to not only forge greater bonds with our
schoolmates but at the same time have a greater and
deeper understanding of what IB is all about, which has
definitely helpedme.Thetripoverlappedthequalitiesofthe
IBLearner Profilethat anIB studentshouldposses,orinthe
least, learn to cultivate in the process.Whitewaterrafting
allowed usto display our qualities ascommunicators aswe

Before the retreat,Iwasalready veryexcited,as ithas

been a while since Ive been on a school trip. The bus
ride to Gopeng took around 34hours andwhileitwas
pretty funonthe bus,itwasalsoveryexhausting.When
we reached the area, Iwasdoubtfulas towhat kindof

camp, it actually exceeded my expectations as I had

girls. Thesharedtoiletwascleaner than I had imaginedalthoughthe water was freezing cold.

Despitethis,IdofeellikeitmademeappreciatewhatIhavemorethanever, especiallywiththe
toilets andthebeds. Themainhighlight of thetrip was probablytheWhiteWaterRaftingasit
was very exhilarating and it forced us as a group to work together to get past the rocks. It
requiredgood teamworkand enthusiasm astheraftingtookaround2hoursplusanditdidget
quite tiringtowardsthe end.TheTreasureHuntwasquitefunespeciallysinceitstartedraining.
I was shocked that they actually wanted us to fish in their pond and when everyone was
scrambling around the pond, I knew that there was no hope in actually catching a fish.
Nevertheless, it was still an overall fun experience. It forced us to work as a team and to
collaborate to finishthe tasksthatweweregivenandalong withthattoalsohave funand to
step outside our comfort zone especially with the frogs. The Internal Session where we learnt
more about the IB andits missionstatementas wellasthe Extended Essaykind of brought us
back tothe reality of IB afterthepreviousday whichmainly consistedofjustfunactivitiesthat
didnt require much thinking. It made me think more about the future which both scaredme
andgaveme slightstressthinkingabouteverythingthatIwouldhavetoachievein thecoming
18 months. The Ice Breaker where we learnt the origins of each othersname seemed rather
boring at first but attheendofthe activityIactuallyfounditquiteinteresting asmost of the
people in my year, I just know their names and only barely know them from having classes
together, butthroughthisexerciseIfeellikeIdidgettoknow thembetter.Ididhavefunonthis
retreat and I did feel like I bonded with others from the year group. The only downside of it
wouldprobably bethe foodthatseemedquitedecentatthestartespeciallyforthechickenrice
which was rather delicious but turned out to be something elseentirely especially onthebus
rideback.

The IB retreat was an interesting experience, where I

was able to form new bonds with new classmates,
strengthen those with old ones and was able to gain a
betterunderstandingof the IBDiploma andits aims.The
initial challenge of sleeping in a room with 14 people
taught me the importance of cooperating and
understanding each othersneeds.Mypatiencemayhave
beenputtothe test at times butIhad tostaycomposed
andreactappropriately.

I had to be a balanced individual. The showers taughtme patienceaswell, wherewehadto

taketurnsandbeconsideratewithotherstime.

The water rafting was great, considering the water was wilder than usual.Thistaughtme to
stay focused and persevere for the sake of my teammates. There were times where risky
maneuversweretobetaken,causingmetodemonstratethetraitsofarisktaker.
The treasure hunt required us to be knowledgeable, apply our brains and communicate to
produce results. All members in our team demonstrated these attributes, which lead to us

Page7

coming first. (Results werent announced, so I take it wewon.)Iwould saythat I wasable to

createagoodrelationwithmyteam,whichwasgreat.
The information given aboutthe IBmademethinka bitmoredeeplythanbefore.Inowknow
what I must achieve and by when. Also, the reason why I amdoing thiscourse hasbeenput
intoperspectiveforme.

Lastly, the bus ride back homeledtoafewof my friends feeling ill. I realizedIwas tostepin
and help. So, I gave advice to comfort them and helped them where I could. I suppose I
demonstratedtheattributesofacaringindividual.

Overall, the retreat allowed me to enhance myself in aspects of being caring and
communicativetowards the studentsinmyyear; being arisktakerwhenparticipatinginwhite
waterrafting,andmostimportantlybeingreflectiveasIamreflectingonmyexperiencesnow.

either. However, after complaining so much to my friends
and actuallygettingontheraft,itfeltdifferent.Cooperation
and communication made things much more interesting.
When I sat next to my best friends and started rafting, I
forgot about all the hardship. We gossiped, talking about
how difficult IBisgetting andthepartyhappeningthenext
week.Withoutme knowing, it seemslikeIbecameintimate
with the new students and even closer to my best friends.
Also, with them, something that could have been a
challengebecamemucheasierandenjoyable.

From working collaborativelywithpeerstoaccepting challenges, the trip to Gopengmademe

intoamorewellroundedperson.

Finally,Ibecamecloserfriendswithmanypeoplebecause of theinterestingconversationswe
hadat nightandplayingcardswiththem. Honestly,Inever expected thisto happensoquickly
but this retreat just gave meaperfectopportunity tobondwith people, andItruly appreciate
it.

TheIBretreatinGopengwasanexciting,adventurefilled
experience which allowed me to learn about the IB
diploma program. The rafting was particularly important
as it encouraged us to work together as a team toavoid
capsizing or falling off the raft. This as well as the
amazingracelike activity allowedme to develop stronger
relationships with the other people in my cohort. The IB

Page8

retreat wasmosthelpfulwhen weweredoinginteractiveactivities, as I believe I learn best in

thisway.I think I cansafelysaythatalthoughthe discussions werehelpful, I learnt alotmore
abouttheIBandabouttheotherstudentsthroughtheseinteractiveactivities.

I can honestly say that the best part ofthe retreatforme wasthe time wehad toourselves,
and the amazing race. This freetimespentplayingcards, talkingand telling jokesandbuilding
stronger relationships was an essential aspect of the retreat. The amazing race was equally
important, as we were encouraged to push through challenges on our own without much
assistance from members of staff or teachers. During our free time, we were encouraged to
communicate with one another, and to be openminded to the ideas ofothers.Theamazing
racewas importantasitallowed ustoworkcollaboratively,andtakeriskstotrytoachieveour
goals. Through these experiences, I was able to really learn what the IB Diplomarepresents,
andwhyweasstudentsareencouragedtotakeit.
