ENCORE! Professional Concert Series Madawaska Ensemble
This concert is held in The Sean OSullivan Theatre on November 21, 2014. The
theatre has very comfortable seats for audiences to enjoy the concert. The stage is
bright and is surrounded by the audiences seats. There is a piano on the center of the
stage and three chairs in the front. Audience arrives early and gives a warm welcome
when performers enter the theatre. The performers of this concert are Madawaska
Ensemble.
The third movement Andante and the last movement Finale: Allegro comodo
in Brahms Piano Quartet C minor create a few images in my mind while I was
listening the concert. Andante makes me feel like an old man is walking in a park
alone in autumn. The leaves from the tree are turning yellow and following down
through the heavy wind. There is no one else in the park except him. This old man
feels lonely and starts missing his friend, but he knows that his friend will never come
back again because of the death. The old guy thinks he cannot change anything so he
decides to let it go. Finale: Allegro comodo shows a painful feeling from the
musician inside world. The man knows he should make a decision quickly. The
choices are very complicated because the man loves that woman however the reality
will be tough to them if they want to be together. The man tries to persuade himself to
follow the rule but he cannot ignore his feeling to that woman. Both of theses two
movements choose the minor key give a more depressed and sad emotion to the
audience. These movements use consonant harmony that the music does not sound
harsh. The mood of the third movement changes from sadness to peaceful by using a

loud to soft dynamics. Most of the time the movements use polyphony to create the
images.
The first movement Allegro non troppo from A major has a countermelody to
against the major melody. This movement is generally conjunct and has a narrow
range. Also it uses consonant harmony that all the music material gives me peaceful
and bright feeling. The tempo of this movement is quick and the dynamic is getting
louder. The second movement Poco Adagio from A major is generally disconjunct
and has a wide range. It uses disconsonant harmony that creates a suspension
atmosphere. It has a slow tempo and the dynamic is getting louder. It has sequence
that sometimes it is a loud-loud pitch and suddenly it changes to low-low pitch.
Monophony also exists in this movement, but most of the time it is polyphony.
The first movement Allegro non troppo from C minor will meet my film scene.
The film will show a man lying on his bed thinking of the woman he loved for a long
time at night. He remembers the happiness time they have spent with each other.
However he is struggling with the problem that they cannot be together because of her
identity. She is his friends wife. The society will not accept their love but the truth is
he cannot stop thinking about her and love her. He is wondering what he should do to
help him out of this situation. This movement uses C minor that creates a sad and
depressed feeling to the audience. The music uses disjunct motion to help the
audience understands the difficulty for this man to make this choice and how exactly
he feels like in his private world. In this movement, there is a part of music uses
conjunct motion that gives a peaceful feeling. That part will suit the idea of the man
spends a good time with that woman.
This is the first time I attend a classical music concert. The audience is sitting
quietly without any response throughout the concert. Audiences will response the

performer at the end of the concert. The performer also dressed in suit. Most of the
concert I attend before, the audiences will sing with the performer and the music is
more crowed. The performer dressed more fashion. While I was writing this paper, it
is difficult for me to link my feeling with the music material I learned. Sometimes the
feeling of the music is hard to describe.
