When you look at the earth and how it was created, you will see
that it is one of the greatestsigns of its Creator.Allaahmakes it a
resting place and as a bed, and subjectedit to His slaves. He
makes their sustenance,provisionand sourcesof livelihoodthere
and created therein for them ways and paths so that they can
move about to meet their needs. He fixed it firmlywith mountains
and makesthem as pillarsin orderto protectit againstshaking. He
flattensit, extendsit and spreadsit, makes it a receptaclefor the
living that brings them together on its surface and makes it a
receptaclefor the dead that bringthem togetherin its interiorafter
theirdeath.lts surfaceis a placeof dwellingfor the livingand its
interioris the placeof abodefor the dead.
Then look at its revolvingorbit, with its sun, moon, stars and
zodiacsand beholdhow it continuously revolvesaroundthis world
till the end of time in this orderand proper
succession and see the
differencesin the night, day, seasons, heat and cold which are
resultsof these wonderfulmovements, and the benefitsthey give
to all kindsof animalsand plantsand all thatexistson the earth.

Islaam: Its Foundations And Concepts
After the originof man has been made clear,it is now appropriate
to explainhis needfor the true relioion.
Isloam: Its FoundationsAnd Concepts 57
Man's need for religion is greater than his need for other
necessittesof life. For, man must know the things that please
Allaahas well as those that displeaseHim. He must also carry out
activitiesthat can bringhim benefitsand othersthat can avertfrom
him harm. So, it is the DivineLaw that distinguishesbetweenthe
deeds that benefit and those that bring harm. That is Allaah's
justice in Hrs creationand His Light among His servantsand it is
not possiblefor peopleto live withoutDivine Law with which they
can differentiatebetween what they should do and what they
shouldnot do.

In view of this, if there are some who say that man is civil by
nature,we must also say: "Man is religiousby nature",for man has
two powers: scientific speculativepower and will power. His
completehappinessdependson perfectinghis scientificand will
power and the perfectionof his scientificpower cannot take place
exceptby knowingthe following:

82 Islaam: Its Foundations And Concepts
But how can man know his Lordas it is due? What are the duties
and obligationsbindingon him? How can he worshiphis Lord?
Man can find who will assisthim duringvicissitudes of life, provide
for his needslike treatmentfor an ailment, givingsome medicine,
assistingto builda house and so on and so forth;but he cannot
find amongordinarypeoplewho can make him knowhis Lordand
exolain to him how to worship Him This is because human
intelligence cannot independently know what Allaah intends,he
cannot even perceive the intentionof his fellow human being
before he tells him what he intends. How can he then knowwhat
Allaah means? Further,it is also because, this matter is only
restrictedto the Messengersand Prophets whom Allaah has
chosento conveythe Messageand to those who come afterthem
amongthe rightlyguidedleadersand the heirsof the Prophet, who
follow their way, take to their Path and help to convey their
message. This is because, human beings cannot receive
revelation directlyfrom Allaahas its bearingis beyondtheirability.
Allaah says,
"lt is not given to any human being that All6h should speak to him
unless (it be) by Revelation,or from behind a veil, or (that) He

The beautresof lslaam are beyondwhat pens can fully write and
enoughexpressionscannotbe foundto describethe virtuesof this
religion;becauseit is the religionof Allaah.Just as the eye cannot
encompassthe perceptionof Allaah and man cannot encompass
His Realityon Knowledge, so can the pen not encompassHis Law
in description.lbn Al-Qayyimsaid, "lf you reflecton the dazzling
wisdom in this Upright Religion, this pure faith and the Law
enactedfor mankind,which no expressioncan perfectlydescribe,
whose descriptioncannot be perfected, the likenessof which the
wisdomof the wise cannotpropose- even if all wise men are to be
as perfectlywise as the wisest one among them, whose beauty
and virtues are perceived and attested to by the perfect and
honourableintelligence, that the world had not known a law better
and greaterthan it even if the Messengerof Allaah, blessingsand
peace be upon him, had not broughtany proof in supportof it, all
that would have been enough an evidencethat it is from Allaah.
Every aspect of this religion shows perfect knowledge, perfect
wisdom, expansivenessof mercy, righteousnessand kindness,
absolute inclusionof all that is hidden and manifest and the
knowledgeaboutthe beginnings and ends.lt also showsthat it is
one of the greatest favours that Allaah has bestowed on His
slaves, for He bestowsnot on them a favourgreaterthan the fact
that He guidedthem to this religion, madethem its adherentsand
chosen it for them. Hence,He remindsHis slavesof the fact that
He ouidedthemto it. He savs.
