The Sybil H. Smith Family Village is a transitional housing program that helps homeless
women and families establish self sufficiency. The Family Village is located at the address 111
Mobile Street in Mobile, Alabama. Dorothy Dinkins, the office manager at Sybil H. Smith, was
able to discuss the services offered by the organization.
The Sybil H. Smith Family Village is a branch of the Dumas Wesley Community Center.
Many of the programs offered include both residents of Sybil H. Smith and members of the
!1
community that come to the Community Center. Classes such as employment readiness,
employment retention, parenting, budgeting, relationship skills and health issues. Women are also
taught job and educational skills so that they may support their families once they leave the
Family Village program.
The main goal of the Family Village is to provide an environment in which residents may
learn how to establish self-sufficiency. Residents may stay in the housing facility for up to 24
months. While there, they are taught important life skills that will prepare them for the work force
and establish healthy family practices. Upon entering the facility, each family is given a case
manager and a detailed case management plan. Meetings are held with each adult resident and
their case manager each week to discuss goals and achievements. Community involvement is also
a large part of the program with each resident volunteering an average of 30 hours each quarter
in the community.
Recreation Room
!2
The typical gathering spaces within the facility are the play room and the computer lab.
Toys, games and books are provided for the children. The room also has tables and chairs for
adults to sit. This area is a nice way for resident children to play together and for adults to meet
and encourage one another. The computer lab lets residents access computers to apply for jobs
and do other research. There is a large table in the room where residents may bring materials to
study or read. Classes are also held in the computer lab to teach residents important life skills.
The facility also has a recreation room that allows residents to come together for meetings,
holiday functions and to watch movies.
Because the women and children coming into the facility are homeless or on the brink of
homelessness, residents need everything to complete day to day life. The most important need is
a place to stay. Rooms are provided to families that have a bedroom area, kitchen, dining area
and bathroom. Furniture is provided as well as all kitchen utensils. Toiletries, household cleaners,
linens and diapers are provided to residents (Dumas Wesley Community Center).

Concept Statement
The design of Bostons transitional housing building will provide a space to
young women and families that is both comfortable and functional. The historic Federal Style building will be designed to preserve its rich history. The
building will feature furniture, textiles, wall coverings and a color palette that is
representitive to the Federal Style. The building will offer four apartment units
that will provide families with all the necessities needed for everyday life. A
gathering area will ensure that tenants will have a shared space for children
to play and for adults to socialize and engage in various activities. The design
of Bostons transitional housing building will preserve the areas rich history
while providing a safe area for young families to recover and learn the skills
necessary to move forward and thrive.
Figure 1
The coverlet shown includes many colors that were used in the Federal
era. Shades of blue, warm neutrals and red hues combine nicely to create an
inviting color palette. Less saturated colors would be used on larger surfaces
while darker, more sarturated colors would be used on accents. Soft blue and
blush pink are shown to invoke feelings of calmness. Adding more saturated
tones, such as navy and red, would create visual interest in the space. This
palette would be sucessful in shared spaces such as the entry and gathering
spaces.
Figure 2
The painting above features cool tones seen in nature. Shades of green
create feelings of calmness and are shown to relieve stress. The addition
of blue into the palette will add to the serenity of the space. Cool neutrals
such as gray will complete the palette. White would be used on architectural features such as trim and doors. Lighter colors and gray would be
used on larger surfaces while deeper tones would be used on accents.
This palette would be successful in the apartments.
Figure 3
In the painting above, saturated primary colors are used. This palette features saturated reds, blues and greens with yellow and warm neutrals balancing out the palette. Red is seen as empowering and energizing but can
also cause fatigue if used too much. Yellow may also be seen as too bright.
Instead, brass accents will be used to bring the color into the space. Trim will
be stained a deep wood tone. Neutral tans will be used to balance the saturated colors used in the palette. This palette would be successful in the directors office area.
This palette is a triad color scheme that includes shades of blue, yellow and red. The colors are
muted bringing a softness to the palette. Blue evokes feelings of serenity and relaxation. Pink, the tint
that results from adding white to red, is a color that is calming and nurturing. Yellow evokes cheerfulness and joy but can cause anxiety when one is exposed to it too much (Color Psychology). To
avoid undesirable effects of yellow, it will be used sparingly and instead brass accents will be used.
More saturated colors will be used on decorative accents throughout the space. Blue and rose pink
were popular colors of the Federal period as were brass accents (Historic Period Home Decor.).
This palette is a tetrad color scheme that includes shades of blue, red, green and orange. The
colors are deeply saturated bringing a richness to the palette. The deep blue represents
knowledge and integrity. Red is energizing and promotes ambition. Using too much red can
cause irritation, so it will be used in smaller quantities. Green is calming and is shown to reduce
stress (Color Psychology). Warm neutrals such as tan and brown will be used to balance out
the palette. Saturated colors were seen regularly throughout the Federal period (Historic
Period Home Decor).

Justification
The Federal design style focused on muted colors (light blue, pink, yellow) in some instances and bold colors (dark green, navy, red) in others. For the
purpose of this project, I decided to choose a softer color palette. The palette focuses mostly on shades of yellow and blue with soft neutrals and
natural wood tones balancing the design. Blush pinks are introduced in artwork. I felt it would be important to give the children residing in the space
an area to play with one another. Because the rooms are pretty small in the apartments, having a place for the children to play with toys, read and
color was important to the design. Another imporant factor in the project is the design of the ADA compliant apartments. Assuring that each room
in the ADA apartments have the 5-0 turning radius, the doors have appropriate clearances and the bathrooms have the required clearances and
grab bars will ensure that residents with disabilities are comfortable in the apartments. To stay true to the Federal design style, furniture was selected
that mimicked furniture produced during this time. Fabrics with high durability were chosen for all upholstered furniture pieces. The combination of
the elements listed above created a design that is true to the history of the building but that also meets the needs of the residents of the home.
Reflection
Residential Design II has taught me many things that will help me in my future studies as well as in my career. Researching transitional housing and
what design elements are important to residents was very informative. I am glad that the course was based around an apartment setting as opposed to a residential single-family property. Revisiting the code and ADA requirements was great because those are some areas that I am a little
rusty on. I really liked being assigned a specific design style. Federal is about as far away as you can get from my personal design preferences so it
was nice being pushed outside of my comfort zone for a project. This will be very beneficial in our future career as interior designers. Not every client will have the same style as you, that is why we need to be able to adapt to their needs and preferences. The team exercise and participation
on each weeks assignments has helped me see the importance of team communication and peer review. Being able to work as a part of a team
is going to be essential to whatever path we choose in the interior design profession. Being quick to respond to communications and giving and recieving feedback on a project is important. Recieving peer feedback as the project progressed helped me see things that I didnt see when I was
working on the design. Having and extra set of eyes was very beneficial in pointing out some important design flaws in the floor plan specifically.
Overall, I have thoroughly enjoyed this class and I believe the skills learned will help me in my future classes and in my career.
